13.9.2013 - Locus 2.15.1.2

Hi to all. Do you want a real BETA version? I'm doing some changes in GUI now. Mainly because Locus is quite often criticized because of un-united layout, weird GUI etc, I'll slowly change all possible screen to same functionality but united design.

There are also some changes, that are not yet perfectly tested. Peter plan some real user testing next week, but I'll be also glad for some feedback from you

changes to 2.15.1

big changes
- completely removed modules
- new style for list of functions (menu > more)

GUI changes (mainly visible on tables or landscape)
- improving data export screen, parking screen, POI alert, navigation screen, altitude manager, geocaching Live API screen
- improvements on sizes of buttons etc. to look better on huge resolution screens

others
- improvements in navigationGenerator (now generate orders for completely all points, even first or last)
- fixed problem with change from Personal map to SmartMaps after start
- fixed problems with log times reported over Geocaching Live API
- fixed problem with loading caches over G4L add-on (basic members)
- fixed problems with refreshing guiding on points from network link
- improved list of geocache logs
- fixed POI grouping on navigation tracks (grouped orders)
- fixed problem with loading online tiles with expired validity
- fixed small problem with searching root folder on storage/sdcard

4.9.2013 - Locus 2.15.0

new version is slowly uploading to Google Play and other servers. Enjoy

you should change the date of the line 4.8.2013 - Locus 2.15.0 to 4.9.2013 - Locus 2.15.0 or?

Thanks menion for implementing the merge track order selector. I'm however still a bit confused about the meaning of "Merge with spaces" option.

Sorry to spoil the party menion... but the "unknown problem" when zooming around RMAPs or SQLITEmaps is still there. Did you actually try to fix it? This is not something "obscure" that only happens once in a lifetime. I can reproduce it within just a few seconds with each single one of my raster maps.

This is a NEW BUG that appeared when your changes included something about "map loading totally rewritten". It worked flawlessly in previous versions.

I'll create a better description to next version. Till then I suggest to draw for example two tracks (just from a few points) a few kilometers between each, and try to merge them with both possibilities ... you'll see

@joeloc: cannot simulate it. is this happen also without enabled shading?

Can't post to the 2.14 thread anymore but wanted to comment on the IMG support. There have been some opinions that there should not be any effort put in to this and someone said it would be better to put effort into finding a program to convert .img to .map. Well I'll tell you I have have spent countless hours trying to find apps to convert .img files and there just is not anything. Tons of tools to "create" or "convert to" .img but not the other way around! I did find one solution where I could export that objects to track files but it's a huge pain and Locus does not play well with lots of tracks on the screen (better now with the new sort by distance). There are so many resources for .img maps because it's an industry standard. In the USA many county websites provide maps in .img format. Personally I don't really care how pretty it looks or if it renders just like a Garmin will but to be able to load up a state wide map (in .img) format is priceless. If someone can come up with a way to convert a .img to .map I will never mention Garmin or IMG again here but unless someone is going to write it it's just not going to happen.

With all that being said I really think a little more time and effort into .img support would be great. I think the standard consumer could really benefit as you can download tons of .img maps online. Most of these maps are built with third party apps, not from Garmin.

I basically have a short list of requests for continued .img support. I don't need or care about all the details of the map files but I do need to be able to see the defined trails on the maps.

1. Ability to hide or resize lables - too large now and very distracting from the objects on the map.
2. Ability to overlay and have complete transparency where the background is. This would allow to overlay on a terrain, sat map, or even a vector map. Basically providing the trails from the img overlaid on a standard vector or more detailed sat/terrain map.
3. Some way to emphasize/enlarge the objects on the img map. Basically just need to be able to make the trails and objects larger/thicker to see better when overlaid on another map.

Where do I send money to get this short list done??

When I load a bunch of caches from Dropbox using a URL like:

I can reproduce the zoom redrawing problem on Locus 2.15.1 with Orux SQLite map too. I think this needs a quick fix.
Plus there's a slight issue with not displaying junction line between two waypoints of selected track:

(http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/9898/vaar.th.png) (http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/9898/vaar.png)

P.S. The redrawing problem is independent on active map shading.
P.S.S. The blank tiles shows up when zooming out quickly while moving through the map.

No shading or other funky map options involved. Just a basic raster map. Why dont you give us meaningful error messages instead of "unknown problem"?! If this had the java exception or a number or whatever in it, you'd probably have fixed the bug in seconds :-).

Anyway... if you prefer to go the "reproducing" way, i have no idea really. Maybe try your biggest RMAP file (mine are all quite big) and load it from externalsd, if that makes a difference. Then zoom around wildly with two-finger-pinching... let go, zoom again, let go, zoom again, all very quickly, maybe before the previous zoom operation is finished. Thats all I can say about it and thats how it always bugs for me.

Strange, because I can't reproduce it with a few rmaps (largest 3.7GB). On the contrary it works very fast on a Note 2

64GB microsd with vfat? android 4.1.2? i can only speculate... but at least i am not the only one with this bug. The "unknown problem" tiles are re-loaded properly btw when i scroll them completely out of view and then back in.

I was really looking forward to the new shading system that´d allow me to use it also on my non-vector maps.
So when i saw that the new version was out i couldn´t wait to try it out.
To my disappointment this new feature only works with android 3 or higher, but I am still on Android 2.3.6 .
How comes that it´s not possible to use this with older android versions?

You don't say what phone/tablet it is. But mine is in a SGS3  and formatted FAT 32 and have no problems. You say your card is formatted VFAT

Please fix this new bug in version 2.15: after editing waypoint in loaded track, the zoom is auto set to maximum level at cross position. This problem only happens when SQLitedb format map is loaded.

Finaly today i installed new version of Locus from Google Play ( + new Ant )  but still some problems with ANT+.

Connecting with ANT every time i started Locus again i see this windows

especially regardind GSC 10- speed cadence sensor- every time i have to write name ( even i have selected ''save'') i tried also with ''default'' but always the same.
With HRM i don't see this problems

http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/6874/o96d.png  (http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/6874/o96d.png)
http://img547.imageshack.us/img547/1618/w9r8.png (http://img547.imageshack.us/img547/1618/w9r8.png)
http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/9233/f3if.png (http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/9233/f3if.png)

But this is not a  big problem, i see correct values like on screen
http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/6848/b8i8.png

The problem is i don't see ,,Cadence'' and Actual Speed ( from ANT)  on my Dashboard
(http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/4849/b5ue.png)
Always have ,,0''   ( of course i am pedaling)

( I tried to change items in Dashboard always teh same no Cadence and Speed from ANT.)

No Problem with Heart rate as shows this picture above.

Edit : There is no sign of Heart Rate and Cadence  in Recorded track  ( see enclose my wife todays trip)

@rkirmeier: nice post (http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=3374.msg23563#msg23563) about IMG format - thanks. I'll be thinking about it. From my point of view, img maps will never be so nice as vector maps from MapsForge. On other side, and it was unknown information till now, since latest 2.15.1 is possible to overlay vector map over vector map. So two MapsForge maps, but also an IMG map over MapsForge. In this case, useful information from IMG may be visible over better looking vector map from MapsForge. Deadly combination I think ...

Anyway as I wrote, if there will be more like you, I'll find some time and invest it to better rendering and some settings of IMG format in Locus. For now, I've some "better" tasks to do.

@bucky kid: I don't understand problem with tracks on map. I've just check few tracks and all seems to render correctly

@eldron: unfortunately for shading of Online and Personal maps, need one method that is available since Android 3.0+. There is no workaround for this. Anyway for vector maps, shading is available for all Android versions

hmm you mean "zoom scale"? Like from 15/125%, it jumps to 16/100% right? Ah seems that problem is only when you pick up item from map. Fine, fixed

@stebu it's a question, how you open this file. Directly from dropbox? I'm worried, that dropbox do not provide exact name of your file

@locuscycling: problems with remebering of ANT devices, aren't related to Locus. I'll forward this to ANT+ developers. Problem with missing values ... ah sorry, my problem, fixed

@joeloc & @buckykid - I've just copied almost 4GB big RMAP, and still no problem. I've played with it more then five minutes and no even single missing tile. I'll try tomorrow on another device.

EDIT: locuscycling, you have to export GPX file in version 1.1, to get sensor values. Anyway you'll probably see only HRM values, not others (bug, fixed)

I've already disclosed that it's being not shownd due to that at waypoint #98 ends navigation data.
But the unwanted zoom after track edit must be a bug because this didnot occur with previous versions so it's just matter of change in handling of SQLite format in Locus 2.15.
I also confirm that the rendering problem is a matter of changes in Locus 2.15 because zooming/panning worked reliably with previous Locus versions. I see very similar problem with all OruxMaps versions with not rendering surrounding tiles on low zooms and panning through raster map. Maybe a SD card problem? I use built-in SD card with unknown filesystem and row I/O scheduler.

read my previous post ... you're there three times ;)

as I wrote, I'll check problem with rendering tomorrow on different device. Anyway I may only confirm that such problems are new in this version. There were a lot of huge changes in work with maps, so it's more then possible that a few problems occur (I warned about this in testing versions)

don't need to repeat this question. Unknown problem means only one thing in case of RMAP maps ... cannot read image for requested x, y, z parameters. This usually mean that "z" parameter is invalid, but I don't know why this happen ...

"cannot read image"? maybe also a file io problem? maybe too many open threads that try to access the rmap file at once? Maybe too many file descriptors? I think I have read somewhere that Android up to 4.1.2 is limited to 1024 file handles in total (ie system wide!).

https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39002

cant you at least show the x,y,z values in the error string for the tile? and all other information you have? file handle pointers etc? i'd really like to use new Locus as well, but the problem is annoying enough that I had to downgrade. it really happens all the time here. not just when trying to force it, but also during normal usage on the bike.

How does this google zoom work? I tried but can't get it to work.
Does it only works when using google style map control? Or does some other setting could interfere with it?

Small thing, the setting window for style map control using check boxes but it should have radio buttons.

@joeloc: sorry, I can't. And why don't you rather create a basic log where all should be visible?

@brotbuexe: it's independed on style (works in both). follow me: tap down, tap up (put your finger out of display), tap down second time and keep finger down. Then slide with it up and down on screen

I'm trying to make this happen but for some reason it seems not to work in any of both control styles. If I tap down shortly, then tap up and wait a while then tap down again holding the finger on display invokes address window. If I tap down shortly, tap up and tap down immediately then hidden toolbars show instead (I think it's handled as doubleclick).

Okay, that does not work for me.
It just does not do anything, no zooming, no moving.
I reset the preferences in settings / misc but still the same.

Edit:
Weird, I restored the settings backup and it just started to work. :)

Edit2:
And now it just stopped working. I just edited this post without doing anything on the phone.

Edit3:
Hm, once in a while it works. I'll try to get a video.

Edit4:

At around 0:30 I get it to work once. At the end for a second time.
The same zoom method works in google maps all the time.
Device is a Note I with CM 10.1. Have the same issue on other devices, all running CM 10.1.

I don't know what i make wrong but still some problems.

After recording a trip i press Stop and track is saved and exported but then when i read this track with Endomondo i see no Heart Rate.
But i can manualy exported this track, in this case Endomondo see Heart rate.

edit:
Sorry i know what i made wrong .Settings/...automatic export...here i have still gpx 1.0 .

Lttle problem with ,, pause '' and ,,Ascent''

We have made mountain bike trip today ca 100 km . In my Dashboard i have Ascent and Descent but i controlled only ascent.
I was looking at this field from time to time and  remember it was 2000m then  i 2100 then i saw 2159 m uphill .
Then in Mala Upa i have to change Battery.
Like always I pressed Pause closed my phone and  change battery.
But when i opened Locus again i saw only something like  2029 m uphill.

The missing tiles problem also happens with this tiny (400MB) orux-format map:
http://www.openandromaps.org/maps/world/World_OSM.zip

With this map, the tiles just remain "empty". There isnt even an "unknown problem" text. And yes, I believe it is triggered by scrolling immediately after zooming, something that happens frequently when using two-finger-pinch or double-tap-and-hold.

http://www.openandromaps.org/maps/world/World_OSM.zip

With this map, the tiles just remain "empty". There isnt even an "unknown problem" text. And yes, I believe it is triggered by scrolling immediately after zooming, something that happens frequently when using two-finger-pinch or double-tap-and-hold.

I tested with the World_OSM map, but can't confirm the problem with Android 4.1.2 and a 32GB Fat32 card.

I can now see my single Canada.icm maps. My Canada Topo Maps are in one folder, about 1500 .icm files but I can just see the selected .icm file. If my location moves a bit Locus don't switch to the next map. Map auto-load is on. Can you have auto load for .img files also?

@joeloc,
I tested it with an older SGS2 with 4.0.4 and a 64GB SdCard (Fat32). Map was World_OSM again.
Only for a very short moment I had the feeling that there are a few tiles are missed. But after zoom in or out is worked without any halt or other problems. Fast scrolling to left or right, and fast zooming in and out. For me there was this problem only "once".
So I would propose to send a catlog to menion, if not already done.

guys leave this issue for a while. I was trying to find this nice problem today https://getsatisfaction.com/locus/topics/_cz_spatne_se_vykresluje_mapa_z_sqlite and probably found a problem with RMAPS instead.

Anyway I'm trying to solve all problems step by step - email, support desk, GetSatisfaction and best on end (this forum), unfortunately still some tasks remain, anyway I hope that tomorrow I'll finally get here :) sorry ..

I'm trying the personal maps shading now on test map without relief and can't get it to show.
Is the feature limited to certain zoom ranges only? Using mostly raster maps at zoom levels 15 and 16.
The same on vector maps, zooms 15 and above don't show shading. Is this because of technical limitation or high performance load?
Maybe the autogenerated relief is too coarse at high zoom levels? I can't say.

Thanks for the new test version. Here is what I've noticed.

- About new style function list:
  - Space for texts below icon is not enough for some long item names.
  - It may be nice to show the information of the item by long tapping the icon.

- On Galaxy Tab 7:
  - GPS view is shown in window but not in full screen. It's too small.
  - points/tracks/items view is shown as tablet style even in portrait. The width is not enough for texts.
It should be smartphone style as it was.
  - export/altitude manager/parking/POI alert screens don't use full screen width in landscape mode.

Is this known bug?
When "Auto-load maps of same type (if exist), other type otherwise" is set,
a selected personal map disappears from the screen by enabling shading maps.

How to reproduce:
1. Download small map and large map below and copy them to Locus/maps folder.
2. Confirm [Map - advanced] > [Shading maps] > 'Personal maps' is checked.
3. Confirm [Map - advanced] > [Map auto-load] > "Auto-load maps of same type (if exist), other type otherwise" is set.
4. Display small map on the screen
5. Enable shading maps
6. Scroll out the small map then come back again -> small map disappears and large map appears
7. Disable shading maps -> small map appears

Maybe a bug?: Displaying Openstreetmap notes don't work (even in the current Pro PlayStore Version). I have read http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/manual:openstreetbugs but even if I activate the function to display OSM Bugs and wait for several minutes without moving the map, nothing is displayed. Sending of notes seems to work (message about success).

Hi guys,
thank you for a some free time you gave me. No serious bugs reported, no urgent wishes, so enough of free time to work :). Result of this, is completely rewrote GUI of Locus. There probably still remain few places with old popup windows, but all will be slowly changed.

Because, there appear new problem with MapQuest routing (which is fixed in this version), together with problem of Geocaching, tile loading on personal maps and few others, I'll have to release version next week, even it wasn't planned. So everything that you want like to change or fix, immediately write me :). Also some opinions on improved design are welcome.

I hope, that all will be now better usable, more clear and also a little bit faster. Enjoy and I'm looking for your comments ;) Nice weekend btw.

KaHeMu, Bucky Kid: design is closer to how android looks by default. There are no plans to allow choose, sorry. I see there anyway few big advantages. Better visibility outside (on sun, bright light), bigger buttons, united design on all screen, more spaces on screens because Ok/Cancel buttons are usually in top action bar now, and few more.

Hello, menion. I'll report what I've noticed in test version 2.15.1.4.

- The map disappearing bug that I've reported in this topic is still exist. Could you please check that?

- Locus crashes when the way of sorting of the online maps is changed.

- I expect that 'INFORMATION Tab' and 'CHART Tab' of tracks are changeable by swipe.

- 'Add maps' is available for personal maps and vector maps but WMS maps uses '+' Button.
  Same interface may be better.

- Data -> Points/Tracks -> folder -> selection button -> 'Invert':
'Invert selection' is defined in strings.xml. This is better I think. But you might prefer shorter word.

- Data -> Points/Tracks -> folder -> sort button -> 'Invert'
Could you change this to 'Reverse' or 'Reverse sort'?

- Could you please create 'function_visible' and 'function_hidden' for [More] -> Pencil Icon -> 'Visible' and 'Hidden'?
'Visible' is used at dashboard editor for Satellites(Visible). It makes a problem on translation.

@ta-ka: thank you for a precise report. Problem in sorting of maps seems to be (by reports I received) a problem in Android itself (some versions). I colorize by orange color text, which sorting is currently enabled and this cause a problem. Locus crash for you only here? because for example in data manager > points > sort, there is also orange highlight for currently selected sorting method. No crash here?

- you also added link to some map problems, may you put here correct link?

- tabs in track screen were never scrolling. There is a problem with scrolling a chart itself, so swiping for tabs is disabled here

- "Add maps" - hmm I'll think about it. "Add maps" button in WMS is anyway much more important then adding some external maps for Personal/Vector, where most users never use it

- texts problems - added/fixed - agree :)

@michael: I've fixed small problem that may cause it, you'll see in next test version, otherwise I ask you for a log (not now, just if same problem occur in next version also)

I couldn't find a way to disable online maps by the provider.

Only by disabling each individual map, the provider will disappear from the list.

As you mentioned that it's depend on android versions, I tried to reproduce the crash problem on three devices, HTC J (android 4.0.4, stock rom), Galaxy Note 2 (android 4.1.1, stock rom), Galaxy Tab 7 (android 4.2.2, CM10.1) and I confirmed that Locus 2.15.1.4 crashed on all devices when online map sorting method is changed from provider to any of Smart choice/Country/Usage. My issues at present:

1. I agree that Add maps control in all tabs ought to look similar. Took me some hunting to realise how to add WMS
2. I have problems with missing tiles (including on vector maps), usually resolved by zooming in and out again, or by panning left or right and back again
3. Some overlays, such as the one below, appear not to cache properly. Although fine on initial display, they lose transparency when the tile is redisplayed and produce an effect like below (as reported by brotbuexe earlier)

1) could you please yet a bit increase the upper level for maps shading to 17?
2) Could you change the selection color in dialogs from pink to something other? ;)
3) Bug: FC when switching in maps manager sorting from alphabetic to smart selection.
4) Maps rendering (no shading) and opening dialogs seems something slower than in 2.15.1, but maybe it's only feeling
The problem with not loading tiles on raster maps seems to be fixed.
Thanks for fixing the unwanted zoom bug

I have just had a brief look at the latest test Version and i think that the old way the "more" menu was designed worked better.
I think that especially for new users the missing long descriptions will be a problem. There is also no line break when the description is too long to fit into one line and it just gets abbreviated with "...." . So again new users won´t really know what the function does, as the Picture is not always self-explanatory.
I am using the German version and quite a few of the descriptions make no sense as essential parts of the text are missing.

It's the silly little things that don't matter that do matter the most. The overall user "feel-good" experience is what has made Apple's fortune.  :)
Yes, orange is better for the map that is visible! But, equally importantly, please use colour consistently. In Main menu | More | Functions, blue is Visible, pink is Hidden. In Quick map switch and in Maps, pink indicates the map that is visible, and blue is an active highlight.

I think the new menus looks worse than previous (up-right corner on the picture). Now there are no icons and menu is not transparent. I think there is no need to increase size of main screen buttons and menus.

Hi,
just downloaded the latest version and the descriptions in the "more" menu are now being display correctly.
I still think that the old layout with the long descriptions was better for users new to locus, as they might not know what each button does, just from it´s name.
However, for me it´s fine the way it is ;-)
I also found another little bug, unless it´s meant to be that way:
When i open a Menu, for example "more" or "geocaching tools" and click onto the top part, where it says "geocaching tools", the buttons behind that layer are being clicked. So if i click at the top left the main menu will open, even though i can´t see the button for it.

On Galaxy Tab 7 (Android 4.2.2, CM10.1),  main menu is properly shown as smartphone style in portrait and as tablet style in landscape, however, data manager and maps manager are shown as tablet style even in portrait as I reported at http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=3374.msg23754#msg23754 (http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=3374.msg23754#msg23754). Could you please fix that before new release?

P.S.
GPS/Compass view is now shown in full screen and altitude manager is also properly shown as same as export/parking/POI alert screen on Galaxy Tab 7.
The problem of force close by changing sort method of online maps has gone. Thank you very much. :)

firstly thanks all for a valuable feedback!

@KaHeMu: please check next version. This seems to be some collision with default theme on your device, I hope it will be fixed now

@balloni: I started to rewrite this (visibility of hidden items) and almost in the end, I realized that I do not agree :). There is nice usability way, to add needed features into right panel and hide them in functions menu to make it shorter ... so hard to say ...

@eldron: we did quite a long testing in the field directly with users (even some that never saw locus before) and one of results was, that they really never read any hint, description etc. So all these descriptions seems to be quite useless. Big advantage of this menu, hope for everyone, is that buttons are bigger and it's much easier to touch them during some activity. Hope you and others will like it ;)

@ta-ka: Galaxy Tab 7 is always causing troubles. It's resolution is too low on it's size, so it fit to different style category. I'll try to fix it. And yes, GPS/Compass screen will be now full-screen as well as many others screen. I'm trying to reduce number of various screens-like-dialog screens, to make GUI more united.

The new version of Map Manager on my phone only allows me to make the choice of sorting once unless I exit Map Manager and re-enter it. The "Sort by" button is inactive after tapping it once. On tablet simulator it is fine.
Similarly the new version of Map Manager does not have the settings button to select/deselect types of maps. It's there on the tablet simulator.
Old version: (note the settings button, top right)
(http://s8.postimg.org/5ghuklfkh/2013_09_25_18_46_39.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/5ghuklfkh/)
New version: (can only select "Sort by" once; settings button missing)
(http://s22.postimg.org/uubfrkwul/2013_09_25_18_47_47.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/uubfrkwul/)
And please don't tell me that's intentional behaviour!  ;)

One more little, almost tiny, bug - in the new weather screen (when did that cool feature appear?? Have I overlooked it so far or did you quietly include that in one of the recent versions?) the German words for humidty and visibility are too long and the last letter of each word is being displayed in the line below, so it looks like this:
Luftfeucht  88%
e               10km
Sichtbarkei 1014 Bar
t
Luftdruck

Might not effect all devices, but affects my phone with android 2.3.6, 3.8 inch display (800*480 pixels).
Oh and it would also be interesting to know which of the many weather services you are using for the data. Because my phone says that it is sunny outside, but reality does not agree with that ....

Hi menion,
the color of text in tabs at tablet is worse then before. Only at the moment the tab is pressed you can see the highlighted text under your finger. At Xperia phone same situation is ok, the tabs aren't in the menu line.
Nowadays I'm planning a hike trip through Italy with creating tracks with routing function. This is a awesome feature of Locus! :) And often I have to use the device in portrait mode.

Btw. there is another bug with portrait mode:
Selected tracks aren't visible. (see pictures)
(http://s14.postimg.org/fzf31j431/ehyhezas.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/fzf31j431/) (http://s24.postimg.org/d3i1rlxhd/u3uzezat.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/d3i1rlxhd/)

edit:
Just tested:
Tracks created in portrait mode are visible in both views. That's weird!

edit:
This is correct only up to a length from about 5.7 km!!
If tracks are longer they disappeared but the turn-over points to be left.

really? i had serious hopes after reading this, but none of the major blunders were even remotely adressed :-(.

1) database manager nonsense screen: besides of it being completely counter intuitive for non-geeks, it prevents locus from remembering positions in track & points lists and forces us to re-open categories and scroll through long lists EVERY SINGLE TIME we deal with tracks :(.

2) splitting of track/point view & edit screens. seriously... why in gods name are you doing this?! having ONE SINGLE track view with editable fields would get rid of so many useless buttons and silly complexity in your interface.

if those points arent even addressed in a "big GUI rewrite", i guess keeping up hopes is kind of pointless.

Here is a possible track VIEW AND EDIT screen:

To be a bit more productive instead of just whining, I just drew a mockup of how a unified track info & edit view could look like:

*That* would be a change worthy to be called "big GUI rewrite" :-). And just imagine how many menus and buttons and other stuff you could simply remove from current Locus...

I found a small bug in latest version.
If you have loaded the map of Germany with small track also complete in Germany but nearby (50km) to the frontier of another country (Denmark) and you zoom out to world map and now you zoom in, Locus loads now the Denmark map. I wonder from what the map load depends?

I have yet one idea for next public version: make the info panel state distinctive: I.e. remember own choice for GPS off, own choice for GPS on, own choice for GPS on with guiding etc., so that user doesn't have to switch by self preferred panel after each Locus state change.

@KaHeMu: your device works quite weirdly with tabs, but who know how much devices will work in this way, so I rather changed background of tabs to dark color in all cases (as big google itself suggest). I spend on it few hours but seems that there is no better solution

about missing tracks - in your case, suggest to create logs with CatLog program (available for free on Google Play)

@john-percy: left "done" button is default android UI, but I agree it's confusing, mainly because of symbol, so I'm not sure if workaround will work, but in next test version should be removed. Text in WMS layer is problem of WMS provider, not Locus

@joeloc: nice post as usually that lead me to think, that my work has sense :) (little ironic), anyway "UI rewrite" is incorrect term - better say "Locus appearance rewrite" - better? To your two points - you never wrote about first one, because to "fix" it, it was work on 30 minutes. Second point is on longer, but I agree it's good idea. I'll think about it

@ta-ka: thanks

@mek: done

@jusc: auto-loading system in work - anyway is this a bug? did you saw any white tiles or locus in the end loaded all tiles correctly?

@Bucky kid: hmm, I'll have to improve this top title, mainly because in new version, all buttons are little bit wider, so in most cases, there will not be enough place for some looong title stories as now

---------------

and probably last public test version to test. I've finally decided to make a release in monday, so there is time for last test and improvements. In next week, I'll finally start work on navigation/guiding stuff again.

On the Map Agreement page, the left tick is a "return and do nothing" button, not a "done" one.

yes I know. Don't understand now - you started with this and I though you don't know why this button is there. And my "done" description was because of icon that is on this button that looks like "done/OK"

Thanks for the explanation, but to me, there are two tick buttons. The right hand one is an OK button, the left hand one is not. I find that a confusing interface. I don't understand why there are two tick buttons, nor why one does OK and the other not, nor how the user can know!  :-\

don't know exactly why google did this - check here http://developer.android.com/design/patterns/selection.html

anyway in latest test version, this button should be removed (I hope)

Hi, menion. I report about icons correction.

1) [Data] -> [POINTS] -> select one point -> [Tools] button

2) [Data] -> [POINTS] -> select one point -> [Map apps] button
I expect tip of blue arrow from 3rd image.
Although the text 'Navigation' is correct, could you please check if the text is taken from the activity shown in 3rd image?
Because if system language is set to Japanese, the text becomes 'Maps' in Japanese.

Thanks in advance.

Locus (re)loads the wrong map but completely, no white tiles. It means the whole track is in Germany. But Locus loads Denmark. Because the Denmark map overlaps a bit the frontier to Germany one half of the track has no visible map, the other half is shown on this Denmark map.
But Locus should reload the last completely covering map, I think.

The background color seems to be the same as before BUT texts are very well in last version. Many thanks for your excellent work, the found solution is the very best!

@ta-ka thanks. I don't know if you're skilled a little with android programming, but I'll rather not go into some technical details. Anyway I'll try to hack it a little to force locus display "correct" icon

@jusc: understand, I'll try to test it

@KaHeMu: hmm your tablet is really very very weird. Aren't you using there some special custom ROM?? Because it act completely weird. In case of track, btw. thank you for logs (very helpful), problem is that your tablets try to draw track with enabled "hardware acceleration" which is disabled for map screen. And it's disable by me in code and it have to work! So I have absolutely no idea why this happen, but something has to change in your device, I'm on 99% percent sure

Hi menion,

the device is in the same state I bought it except added external 16GB sdcard. And some pieces of software of course. ;D

Hello,
by the GUI improvements, the buttons grew bigger, so my favourite 5 buttons don't fit in the upper bar any more together with the configurable Info-area.
See screenshot comparison.(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/28/ra9uzada.jpg)
I can see the benefit for other user (with big thumbs ;-) ).
Maybe there can be found a way to optimize it:
- automatically size the buttons so that the desired number of buttons fit
- implement a setting for topbar buttonsize in config
- make it possible to hide the menu button if you have enabled the "slide main menu from left"
- make the top bar scrollable like the side bar
- ...?

But in a given range. Buttons shouldn't be too small.

I'm sorry guys, but I do not agree with any of suggested abilities. Understand that you use top label panel, but usability of buttons is by me much more important. So I suggest to reduce number of buttons in top panel and use main menu or right panel for most used functions

Sometimes I zoom in when I drag the finger to the top sometimes I zoom out. I would like to zoom always in when I drag my finger to the top.
And still sometimes I don't see all poi when I start Locus.

Well, did anybody COMPLAIN ??
And mind: there are different sizes of Androids, i.e. on a Galaxy Note the buttons in the old versions are already bigger than the new buttons on a 4" phone may be. In other words: on larger screens they get simply HUGE now. Simply give the Information section the same space as before, and divide the remaining space by the number of buttons chosen (typically between 3 and 6) by the USER (not you, not a shitstorm or vote, simply the USER ;-)
Cheers
Michael

I read the forum now already two years but cannot remember people complaining heavily about too small buttons.
Why are larger buttons now necessary for better usability and the price of ugly/unusable display of e.g. coordinates?

I'd like to get the previous button size back!

@up. I truly agree. I've also not noticed complaining about button menus (appearance and size). I simply do not understand gui changes. Changing every gui object into white is also weird. The true is, this upgrade makes Locus uglier.

"anybody complain"? - a little here https://getsatisfaction.com/locus/topics/is_there_any_way_to_enlarge_buttons_and_their_labels and a lot over email

I anyway reduced a sizes a little. Big difference will remain on tablets. Sizes you see in your current test version are taken from Android library, so they're suggested sizes for android buttons, not some my nonsenses

- and "now uglier" - I'm sorry, but I'm sure, there is not so much changes that influence usability itself and appearance changes are usually matter of individual taste. White top and bottom panels/titles at dialogs are how android usually looks and we decided that such united colors looks more elegant then "hard" black as before

One thing that has been mentioned in a similar kind, I'd like to stress: "Data" is just an additional layer that does not add any value, nor is it intuitive. Why not offer "Tracks" and "POI" (the own ones, not the new DBs) as separate buttons ?
If you prefer, then in addition to "Data".
