Hi guys,
we have finally, thanks to four months of Michals work, new manual for Locus Map:
http://docs.locusmap.eu... or Locus > menu > support > knowledge base
We will try to keep it as much up to date as possible. Anyway not everything is already there (part, mainly advanced topics are still in preparation) and not everything may be clear to you.
And here comes more question / request. If you find that something you personally wanted to know is not there, or something is not clear, or ... whatever ... please open in this section new topic or write into this, new topic. Michal will take care about it ;). Thanks!
Hi Michal,
first impression looks promising ;D
after reading the geocache chapter, here my remarks ;)
- i miss discription of marked red rectangles
- i think text is better placed behind (2)

thanx Balloni for your feedback! All repaired...
thanks, it looks good :D
in same page discription for "GC Offlinizer" why you insert there a link to "Geocaching tools"?
Again... GC Offlinizer has been added and links to it corrected.. thanks! Go on :) (Menion revised the Manual and didn't notice these details :))
uff, check all links? Well, I read it not so precisely ... guilty :-X
Any way to get it as an offline version? I will soon (6h) enter my flight back home
hmm so fast ... no sorry. I think, there are some services that grab content of web into PDF, but result will be probably bad. But later, once manual will be finished on 99%, I'll definitely look at it ...
EDIT: btw. enjoy your flight!

Hello Menion,
Thanks for thinking about it and well, I back now at home...

- please discribe also start track recording from sidepanel, it is different displayed, depending on setting and in this case the back button work as expected ;)

Navigation calculation does not require internet if you use BRouter. My reply refers to your yellow be-aware.
edit
The Navigation article does mention offline routing options, though.
In general: the manual is VERY good stuff!

Brouter only does route calculation, no navigation!
Navigation instructions are calculated by Locus but just based on the calculated route (or on any other gpx track) without knowledge of any road information.
OK, I know what you mean. But I enjoy a bit if fun and brainwork on the road. I am not a robot ... :-)

Hello Michal
Minion told me, i have no more access to new knowledge base, because first you should complete your work.
In the meantime i have access - but anyway - I only want inform you for now.
Please use same titles as we can see in Locus:
(http://s22.postimg.org/nhliinwy5/2015_05_15_201925.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/nhliinwy5/)
"Map auto-load" means vector maps in this case. right?
(http://s18.postimg.org/qgvgh9rx1/2015_05_15_203206.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/qgvgh9rx1/)
Hi Gynta,
Thanks for comments. New knowledge base has been created a little bit in advance according to Locus evolution that hasn't been released yet. Locus Maps as a new name for vector category was a mid-link that will be partly abandoned - map sorting is one topic that is being dealt right now. Therefore the map sorting passage will be completely reworked. Hold on :)
Michal - the manual http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:basics:locuscontrol&s[ (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:basics:locuscontrol&s[) says zoom by "tap & draw" - I think this should be "double tap & drag" - eg. https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/drag-drop.html (https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/drag-drop.html).
Thanks Andrew, mistake repaired. Will be grateful for any other comments.
Hi Michal,

No problem. Here is some info that may help with reporting issues: http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:faq:question#i_ve_got_a_problem_whom_to_ask_for_advice
@Michal - is it possible to show a "breadcrumb" for each manual page? I keep seeing pages, eg Menions "got a problem" page that isn't in the left side panel Main Menu "table of contents" - I had no idea it existed. I then tried Main Menu > About Locus Map > Error Reporting - but this is not found/ doesn't yet exist. So how would a user know about "got a problem"? The Main Menu could have more expandable levels, and each page could have "breadcrumb" so the user then learns for next time where in the manual organisation that page lives. Just a suggestion to improve the manual & reduce support load for you guys maybe.
Thank you Andrew for your suggestion. Had no time yet to describe this.
As suggested by gynta (http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/edit-track-creation-of-waypoints), I would like to propose an addition to the manual:
A definition of frequently used terms (FUT ;) ).This is always a problem in discussions here and on the Helpdesk. In the above topic I explicitly inserted my working definitions, to get that out of the way first. I'm pasting an edited version of this here, as starting point. I'm aware that there is no globally accepted definition of all this, so it can't be avoided to be somehow Locus-centric - and it'll probably be criticized by some. But if we here have some kind of common language, even if it isn't perfect, it will make discussions much easier (and shorter).
- Track:
A collection of trackpoints that are connected. - Route:
A track whose trackpoints have no timestamps, i.e. a planned track. - Recorded track:
A track whose trackpoints have timestamps. - POI (points of interest):
The points defined globally in Data > Points. Can be shown/hidden individually. - Trackpoints:
The individual points that a track consists of (with or without timestamp). - Waypoints:
Specific points that have the same attributes as POIs, but belong to a track and will be shown/hidden together with the track (not individually). Waypoints do not need to be at the same position as a trackpoint, however waypoints created while recording will be. - Navpoint (Navigation waypoint):
Special waypoints with a fixed set of types that trigger specific actions (speech output, etc.) while navigating. Furthermore, they're always attached to a trackpoint.
As I said, this is open for discussion - but probably at some point the "Locus godfathers" should decide what to use.
Well done @slarti76 - you beat me to the suggestion. @0709 will like the nice short abbreviation Navipoint. Thanks.
There are currently two types of POI, which does cause confusion:
1. The points defined globally in Data > Points. "Data points", maybe? These can be edited.
2. The points of interest from the OSM database downloaded with vector maps from the Locus store. They are accessed by More > Points of Interest (beta) and are also displayed as overlays on the map. These can be searched but not edited.
They should be distinguished in any list of definitions.
Good point there @john_percy.
I think we should reserve the term POI for the "official" ones, and perhaps call the Locus-internal ones
Personal Points.
That would lead to these definitions:
- POI (points of interest):
Points that are defined as part of or additional to a map. Can be searched and shown/hidden with the "Points of interest (beta)" function. - Personal points:
The points defined globally in Data > Points. Can be shown/hidden individually.
Today i needed some manual links to help but it was difficult now to find quickly and it was a little bit frustrating - compared to the old system.
i miss good old "screens" overview:
In the past i looked to "screens" - found it very quick and can help with a link.
eg: try to search for this "compass" screen in new manual.
(http://s27.postimg.org/vu6g02fin/screen_compass_01_s.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/vu6g02fin/)
or gps screen
---
Same with settings:
in the past i looking in setting (it was a structure copy from app) and have the link.
eg: try to search for setting "hold map center" in new manual.
---
Another example from today:
searching for function "map calibrator"
in functions? - no
hm, in map? - nope
hmmm, tools? - nono
ah - of course, in "advanced map tools" - no
ah forget it...
---
if i need always the "search field", we don't need a structure.
I know - now we have groups - logic groups - lot of groups - and group in groups.
I'm also sure, developers will find all stuff very quick - but developer don't need manuals...
I think a new user will give up and post in forum - it's easier.
Please think more like a noob!
I'm more a "tree structure - fan"
Anyway - I know it was a lot of work. thanks for this.
sorry for typos - it's late...
@Michal - I stumbled across this method of route planning - http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=4605.msg37076#msg37076 (http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=4605.msg37076#msg37076) - by gynta today. I wish I'd known about it a long time ago, while still not perfect, for most situations it is better than using the track editor.
In summary
- add BRouter as application to main screen
- to create a "routed" track add a point named "from"
- add a point named "to"
- optionally add via points named "via"<n>
- optionally add nogo areas as points named "nogo"<n>
- tap BRouter icon to calculate a GPX file saved in mapitems folder
- import this GPX to display the track
- adding these points can optionally be simplified by creating quickpoints - see the videos

A sort of "breadcrumbs" can be seen in upper right corner of each page, e.g. "manual:faq:question". However, we'll see to some other solution for better orientation.

@slarti76 too... The duality of general POI and Locus POI is referred to here http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:points:about. However, "Locus POI" problematics hasn't been finally solved yet even internally. The feature handling Locus map POI (Menu > More > Point of interest) is still named "Beta" as you can see. So you can expect a bit of evolution here.

Dear gynta,
I understand your being upset with the new manual. You were working with the old one for many years and knew every bit of it here and there... Menion asked me to overwrite it so that it is clear and understandable. The old manual was written gradually, little by little as it was needed to clarify Locus's growing features and options, therefore many Locus aspects were dealt in many places, scattered across many sections. Now everything has its place and your comment here is the first completely negative I've come across. If it were as you say, I would be a dead man, we have hundreds thousands of users... Moreover, if Menion had disagreed with the structure I had proposed, he'd have stopped the project in the beginning. And I guess he knows Locus users the best of all.
Anyway, thank you for your observations and comments.

LOL, yes, I'm really am glad I read each comment in every topic every day, for little "gems" like the @gynta BRouter one. I've only summarize the main points, mainly for benefit of other users, you should really check the 3 youtube videos for full understanding of how the track creation with BRouter suggestion works. We've been discussing this for some time but haven't come to a satisfactory solution yet. The entry article about points in the manual clarifies to newcomers that there are "two kinds" of POI handled. Original manual didn't regard this at all. So things have got moving :)

And is it possible the "breadcrumb" can be turned into actual links like below so the user can navigate back up the document hierarchy?

I've already discussed it with Menion. We have to look into some dokuwiki plugins if there is some to tackle this.
I think it is already changed. Check main top breadcrumbs ... there is already setup a hierarchy of page in whole wiki site. Is this what you wanted?

Thanks but no - I mean the current document hierarchy on top
right hand side, not top
left hand side - see my screen cap. It is currently just plain text, not individual links, so you can't at present navigate back "up the document hierarchy":
(http://s24.postimg.org/wrnm2v4jl/2015_05_26_17_44_06_manual_user_guide_tracks_pla.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/wrnm2v4jl/)
Understand understand. Anyway with these texts in top right, I'm unable to do anything. But instead of this, I was able to change breadcrumbs on place visible on Michal screenshot - in top left part of screen. There should be now correct hierarchy with ability to move one (or more) step back. believe that better then nothing ;).

@Michal - maybe a suggestion for navigation/guiding - I read somewhere you try to keep each topic in just one place, however I was trying to get some information on navigation mode, so I first went to http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:tracks (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:tracks) because there are no "top level" topics in the contents. It mentions "about...routes, "route planning & editing" but none provide a link into navigation mode which I found confusing. So then after a search I learnt that navigation/guiding is under "functions" - that's fine, but maybe some cross links from the tracks/routes section(s) of the manual into guidance & navigation topics could also be useful.
For example from http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:tracks:about (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:tracks:about) convert the existing text "can transform a previously recorded track into a route and navigate along it" into actual link?
@Michal - the navigation advanced settings (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:functions:navigation:settings (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:functions:navigation:settings)) need updating. There should be a description of "strict route navigation" & other recent changes. I was trying to find out the exact difference between strict & not-strict route navigation.
Hi Andrew, actually there are quite a lot of crosslinks in the articles but you're right, it needed some major ones. I've added them. I've also updated the navigation settings section. Thanks for comments!

Hi Michal
in some posts, e.g. in this

Hi Wolfgang,
the post you mentioned deals with problems of validating via Geocaching LIVE connected with transferring settings backup to another device. As Menion wrote in his answer - the manual isn't the place to explain why things work or don't work unless its necessary for understanding a particular feature. All features you've listed in the table require Internet connection and valid geocaching.com login. As in the case explained in the post above, the login was broken as it wasn't backed up. Or, as happened a while ago, some externals like e.g. G4L addon are updated which requires renewal of login ticket. There surely are more cases when the login is required repeatedly but the manual regards only ordinary actions, not these above mentioned - that's why we maintain the support page as well.
Thanks for your answer
can´t understand your decision, but no problem for me

Hmm I think that both are correct. Missing third button should be visible only in case, you have installed Google Earth in your device. It is same button as in "Point screen" - it allows to work with track in 3rd party apps. And only app that can now handle track from Locus is Google Earth.
I added information that the button is hidden when no 3rd app is installed. Thanks for the remark!

Hi Baloni55
"s" ist added
With the bold string - thats funny. I have'nt found a reason for this so I made the string bold and afterwoods plain and it solved the problem.
BTW: While my name is Christian my nick is kech61 and I'm responsible for the WIKI-translation
Thanks for reporting this issue
Christian
Over-Christianized-wiki :).
Same problem with bold characters happen also in Czech or English translation. It seems to be some highlight of selected page, but it works really weirdly.

Hi Michal
please update
http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:functions:live_tracking
@point 2:
The path is "Discover > Live tracking"
not "Discover > Live tracking > Instructions" - because there is no "Instructions" option in the pull down menu.
"Instructions" is a part of "...Live tracking"
@point 3:
There is no "+" in the topbar
hi Gynta, chapter updated, thanks for notice
Hi Michal,
i think my knowledge using Locus and manual is reasonably well...
but sometimes i struggle to find description inside manual.
So e.g. i want to read description of Settings/Track recording
- but in table of content i can´t find "Settings" :-[
- ok, i open Tracks&Routes also can´t find Settings in this table of content :(
- next i open "Tracks Recording" and well hidden i find on bottom of page link to "Track Recording Settings"
- a view on "you are here" confuse me complete, no accordance to table of content !
I think new locus users give up in this situation
my suggestion:
- add User Guide/Settings in first table of content
- add "........Settings" in each sub table of content, similar "Maps"
- if so, "you are here" should be understandable

@ balloni
In the past i had similar xperience
http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=4558.msg37040#msg37040
but of course, i respect the new idea to have groups/themes now!
So the best (in most cases the only one) way to find any help is to use the "search" function.
8) ;)
@gynta
@balloni55
I changed the "settings" structure in Manual to more "app-like" appearance. Hope you like it ;)
Quote from: Michal on March 02, 2016, 09:27:58Hope you like it ;)
I do! ;D
btw.
small hiccup in Functions - weather icon position.
Hi Michal,
it looks fine 8)
as usual after first use some small notes .... ;)
- icon Web Services is missing
- icon Geocaching is displayed larger than all others
- Settings > most folders open discription on top of page :)
> all Map...folders open discription a little bit lower :-[
> Guidance folder open discription at end of page ::)
hiccup...fixed (needed a few ' ' because of differently rendered icon)
webservices - originally just a broken line - the link was common with addons and coapps. Anyway I divided it, looks better even if it leads to the same page
settings > folders - up, lower, bottom... I don't understand what's wrong?
Quotesettings > folders - up, lower, bottom... I don't understand what's wrong?
sorry Michal, it was my fault :-[
now i noticed that you jump always direct to "settings part" in description and not always to top of page
Please adjust to same size.
Otherwise it will destroy the layout.

Hello Michal
during my problem with corrupted DB
http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/crach-after-search-in-track
i struggle a few times with infos from manual. In the meantime menion has improved this manual page, thanks :)
http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:advanced:map_tools:corrupted_sqlite
but i think it should be more improved/added for better understanding.
- the link in manual point to a page with several downloads, but on first view user can´t find "sqlite-shell" :-[
so it would be better in manual is written "sqlite-tools" (Win/Mac/Linux)
- please add also parts from menions screenshot to this manual
http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/crach-after-search-in-track#comment-27435
for better understandig., working with DOS/cmd isn´t daily doing ;)
- sentence in manual "Try to import the fixed database" is unintelligible for an ordinary Locus user !
some examples would be helpfull
e.g.
- copy fixed tracks.db or waypoints.db to locus/data/database
a.s.o
so user can read in manual HOWTO, if he get following screen

Hi gynta,
I'm very sorry for "ignoring" you but I didn't know about your post as for some reason the e-mail notification in this forum stopped working for me.
Icons - thank you for your notice. Nevertheless, let me explain - 99% of icons are generated directly from the ones used in the applications (.svg format) through some Menion's script into .png format. The rest is fetched manually either from third party devs, from the Internet etc. Some icons contain transparent padding, some don't. Wiki has quite limited options of image adjustment and we have not much time for tackling this, in our opinion very marginal problem of a few alignment issues. Anyways, I sort of repaired the two most visible ones that you posted in the PM. Thanks for understanding
@balloni55 thanks for notice. As I've written to gynta, this forum somehow stopped notifying me about new posts so I discovered your posts only now.
Corrupted SQLite article - Advanced parts of the Manual were not rewritten as in case of the basics and user guide - just slightly corrected language - we didn't consider this part of Manual crucial as very few of our users visit it. Nevertheless, the chapter has been revised according to your proposal.
Wording in the app dialog was changed shortly after Ian's remark.
Hello Michal,
thanks for your answer and improvements in manual ;)

Hi Wolfgang, and that is the FAQ about - Locus on Blackberry. In the beginners section we don't say that Amazon Locus won't work on Androids, we judt emphasize that, again, Amazon is the selling channel for Blackberry users. However, thanks for the notice about omitted Pro version.

Yes it does - in a new installation of Locus. It helps new users understand that they can add buttons to the function panels

Not exactly. It is there even if you change the default buttons. It can be set the same way as other buttons - removed or added. You can add it to the fpanel too if you want :)

I can not find anything in the manual yet for mixed mode
Hi all,
my apologies for not responding for such a long time.
@balloni55 - Map Items updated, geocache types - whole geocaching page is going to be updated co GC types are on my to-do list
@freischneider - blending mode in map overlays - I've been waiting for exact definitions of the modes from Menion for years. Now he's provided some - it has a pretty complicated background originated from Porter/Duff composing algebra. In order not to confuse Locus users we prefer staying back from this complex theory and recommend them to test each mode themselves and find what suits them the best. Nevertheless, I added a few examples and a link to an article explaining the theory for those who are interested.
