Hello everyone,

For years, I have been using Locus Map for hiking and mountain biking, along with OpenAndroMaps, and I am very satisfied with them.

But recently, I discovered the website gpx.studio.
It uses a 'Mapterhorn' overlay that displays terrains and relief beautifully. They aren't just simple grey areas with varying shades anymore. You truly get the impression of seeing the actual rocks on the map!

With my limited knowledge, I've looked around but haven't found a way to integrate this overlay into Locus Map.

Hence my questions:

Is there a way to integrate it as an overlay in Locus Map?

If so, is there a tutorial on how to do it?

If it can't be integrated as an overlay, can it be integrated directly into OpenMaps?

... If so, is there a tutorial for that? :)

Is there any hope of getting this overlay integrated into Lomaps (both mobile and web app)?

Here is a comparison between Lomaps and gpx.studio at a 100m and 50m scale, covering an area that is just a large hill, not even a mountain!

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hi Hudsson

Interesting photos, I downloaded the map and the theme, but haven't found the overlay. Where did you found it?

Hi Joska.
You can go here : https://gpx.studio
On the right, you choose "Surcouche / Mapterhorn Relief"

I found this : https://mapterhorn.com

But I don't know how use it on Locus Map  :(

@hudsson
thank you for your message and for the detailed comparison - and also for being a long‑time Locus Map user :-)

We have actually started using Mapterhorn data as well in our web planner https://web.locusmap.app
However, we simplify the data quite heavily, because of data size, server load and bandwidth requirements. This is the main reason why the rendering in Locus Map currently looks less detailed than in gpx.studio.
But we do not rule out using a more detailed version in the future.

Regarding integration on your side:

Can raw Mapterhorn data be imported directly into Locus Map?
Unfortunately no - the raw data downloaded from Mapterhorn cannot be used directly in Locus Map.
They must first be converted into one of the supported formats:

  • HGT (elevation grid)
  • or a raster map (e.g., GeoTIFF → MBTiles)

For both alternative, you can use tools such as: Rasterio, GDAL

However, both require some work with the command line and basic knowledge of geodata processing. So I'm  not sure if suitable for you.

@Joska
You can't find the option because you haven't expanded the 'overlay' section.

@Voldapet
Thank you for your reply.
I look forward with hope to the day when the terrain shading can be used to its full potential.
Indeed, my level of knowledge in this area is currently limited and will certainly prevent me from doing it myself... but well, I'm going to try to explore. That's how we make progress!

In the meantime, I must admit I try other apps for my hikes and mountain biking, but I always give up very quickly to stick with Locus Map, which I find to be the most comprehensive.

Kudos to your whole team for your work.

@Hudsson
Yes, it looks in the pictures as if I hadn't opened the overlay section, but that's because I couldn't post the third picture with that section open. I'll go back and do that now, but I still can't find the overlay you described.

Yes, I found the problem!
First, you must go to "Settings" at the top of the screen, and then to "Map Layers", where you can choose all the options that you want to use.
  •

Joska

Did so, but altough checked, this layer is not to use.

You haven't chosen the right option!  :P

I don't speak english very well... and less german  ;D  so, i'll use Gemini to translate :)
Tell me if it's good for you now.

---------

Thanks for your efforts. I'm an older user, and after many attempts, I started to doubt my own judgment, because I generally understand the strategies, but then suddenly, after trying out various combinations of cards and levels, MAPTERHORN suddenly appeared on the right among the options. Interesting presentation.
Then I changed a checkbox just to test it, and boom—MAPTERHORN disappeared, and now I can't bring that level back up. After many attempts, at some point I couldn't select any maps at all—the web app still seems a bit buggy.
So now I know that MAPTERHORN exists; it's just wonderfully hidden somewhere :-)
