... I ask myself – is it really necessary to indicate the compass mode with different colours?

– When the map is turning, auto rotation is obviously turned on.
– When the map is not turning, a glance at the compass needle reveals the actual orientation. (If north is not up, I just tap the rotation button once to reset orientation.)

So for me, no additional indication needed.

Suggestion: point away. the compass needle red, green, gray.
I would prefer the compass needle in the centering button. But where to turn it on and off?

Or maybe not red/green/gray for the north part of the needle, because a red compass arrow is always associated with "north". Maybe instead change the colour of the south part of the needle. The three different colours don't have to be so strong that they leap to the eye – it could also be white, light grey and maybe a greenish gray, or something like that.

I also think markers are something that draw attention to something that happens less frequent like e.g. a map update – the information about the current compass mode should be more unobtrusive.

@Menion – what I meant was not to make the transparent area around the zoom buttons bigger, but make it functional, so that if you tap a little bit besides the + or the – button, the app still "understands" this as a tap on the + or – button.

And sorry if I warm up another old topic: The bottom and side bars are quite big using unnecessarily much map space while the zoom buttons that are used much more often are so small it happens repeatedly that I accidentally tap beside them.

I perfectly understand that bigger zoom buttons wouldn't look good, but is it maybe possible to make the surrounding transparent area touchable – to make the buttons in fact bigger without changing the look?

I'm okay with the actual position of the compass button. For me, it is actually a button, not only a display of the orientation, that's why a position at the bottom of the map screen definitely makes sense.

But, another issue, i noticed a strange behaviour of the map orientation when tapping the compass button while moving, e.g. in a train...

The new separated center button is great, and so is the smooth animation! :)

@Menion
I just tapped the upper one, then the lower one. That was it. It simply doesn't jump from one to the other, like radio buttons normally do. Both options stay activated and it's not possible to deactivate them any more. Issue is reproducible.

Beta 4.2.1.4:
This should not be possible, should it? ;)

I can also confirm a lag of 1 sec when tapping the main menu button. Because of that, using 3x5 functions grid is not really practicable for functions that are used quite often. This behaviour was always like this since LM4. No noticeable lags with other menus. I take my mobile to be quite fast, but in this fast changing world maybe I'm wrong ;)

Same happened to me, crash reproducable:

After exporting this problematic track as gpx and then reimporting it, Locus doesn't crash any more when tapping it.
