4.9 seems to have fixed the navigation-becomes-guidance issue I mentioned upthread, thanks.

Can't be absolutely sure without spoofing GPS or physically going back to the trail, but I'm pretty sure.  :)

Quote from: Menion on April 20, 2022, 08:39:18When you plan a really short route where are none! navigation commands (no instruction to turn) and you have disabled generating of navigation commands by the shape (settings > navigation > advanced > Frequency of commands), app does not recognize route as navigation route so it starts a guidance mode instead.

Thanks for the quick fix; I'll check it out soon.  I did have "maximum deviation from route" = 250m (and navs shorter than that), which might've triggered the problem.  But not in an obvious way.   :)  Cheers.

I navigated (car mode) to a trailhead, no problems.  Turn-by-turn directions.

Once on that trail, every attempt to navigate to a point farther down the trail (bike or hike mode), resulted in guidance instead ... the style of guidance I never use, with a single square guidance icon in the upper-left.  And just "beep", instead of "after 20 metres..." that I was expecting with "navigation".  The trail is properly tagged in OSM (foot=yes, bicycle=yes) and hasn't changed in years.

I need to investigate this further.  (4.8.2 gold)

EDIT:  The named trail passing through N53 18.852 W112 57.329 in Alberta is interesting.  Those coords are roughly the midpoint of a single way of several kilometers, with appropriate tags for hike routing.  However, within that single way, some attempts at navigation give navigation, some give guidance (eg, from those coords west to the junction).  I can't figure out the logic.  (And should an app ever give you something different than you asked for?)  Same results on two devices.

Thanks in advance.  Not urgent; enjoy the weekend.  :)

Settings -> Navigation -> Router
Make sure it shows LoRouter Offlline
Tap the icon to the right -> Automatic Updates

The "Quick Bookmark" feature can help, especially if you add its button to one of the function panels.  Hit "+", predefined, OpenStreetMap, then "x" because it gives no indication it worked.

Now, move the map cursor to the item of interest, tap Quick Bookmark, then select OpenStreetMap.  It'll open a browser window to the OSM "Query Features" page.

Terminology is really confusing here.  "Internal storage" vs "Internal memory" in the Set Working Directory dialog.  "Internal" vs "External" in this discussion, but both seem to be inside the phone somewhere.  Those who know that one is removable and called "SD" would be confused by an "Internal" option being /sdcard/Locus, which (I think) is in non-removable memory despite the "sdcard" name.  I think only an Android developer could understand all this.

Here's the chance to be clear and non-confusing.  And if there's no need to worry because you're on Android 10 or lower, then please say so in the UI.  Thank you.

OAM maps (openandromaps.org) are similar, and update on their own cycle.  That's monthly for Europe, 3-4 months (argh!) for the rest of us.

Which map will show your work first?  It's pretty random, but you can expect to wait.  Online maps, of course, will update much faster.

"no longer"

What about Android 10, 9, 8, ...?

I had a bad dream a few weeks ago where the app (beta?) surprised me with a notice that something had changed (I never changed anything!), I experimented with the "new normal", didn't like it, then changed it back.  Did that really happen?  Do I have to care about this if I don't have Android 11?

The point visibility bug is the ONLY bug as far as I'm concerned; it happens all the time to me.  I don't have a complete recipe to duplicate it, but might be close.  From memory:
1) Always keep Favorites folder showing all points, always, on both devices.  If I see 0 or a small number, grumble and turn them back to all visible.
2) On phone, move a point from Favorites to another folder.  Sometimes, I also Hide the point after moving.
3) Time passes.  Sync happens.
4) Favorites on tablet show 0 or small number visible.  (!!!)

Troubles & Questions / Re: Topo map display problem

Hi.  You said .img.  Is that a Garmin format map?

Locus' support for Garmin format is undocumented, I believe, and pretty basic.  I tried it years ago (I had many leftover Garmin maps), but quickly gave up in favour of OpenAndroMaps and/or Locus' own LoMaps.  Both are offline topo map families.

Have you tried either of those map sources?  You might be pleasantly surprised, and there are lots of theming options to tweak the appearance..

Place names are the big shortcoming of the V3 format.  (What city is this?!?)  That, and the inability to draw curved text labels, which means fewer labels for rivers and trails are drawn, only on straight sections.  V4 fixes both those issues.  (Also with OAM you get mountain ranges, but that's off-topic here.)

PS, if you still prefer LoMaps, there is a version of OAM's Elements theme (mentioned above) for LoMaps, called Elements LE (Locus edition).  That should help with sparsely populated areas, but won't fix the missing text labels.

(Minor:)

I like that the geocache title is protected from scrolling out of sight.  But it doesn't lock to the top of the screen, as you might expect.  (This is on my phone, 2280x1080, Android 9, with several recent versions including current beta.  On my big tablet, more pixels, Android 10, it works fine.)

To clarify...  After moving directories, the files left behind in Locus/mapsOnline were named LoMaps_Hike&Bike.*, with sizes 443kb, 340kb, and 32kb.
I believe that was from the map that was shown by default after the move (during the move?), and the smallish file sizes would reflect a single screen of tiles.  I immediately switched back to my usual vector maps and re-selected the theme.

Selecting other online maps afterward does NOT add more files to this folder.

EDIT:  It also seems to have forgotten the selection for a pre-loaded global map.  But I was able to re-select it manually.

I tried the beta (from the Android 11 folder) on my Android 9 phone.  (That part made me nervous.)

  • On startup, it said, "Working directories ... have been changed ..." (this is a SCARY message), and gave only one option: Internal storage.  Only one?

  • Checked About.  The "duplicate" message is gone, simply /sdcard/Locus.

  • Went to "Set working directory".  Now it showed two options:  Internal storage and private folder in internal memory.  I double-checked the backup, crossed my fingers, and changed it to private folder, clicked Move.

  • After a few minutes, Locus restarted.  I needed to re-select my preferred map and theme, odd, otherwise, all seems well.

  • In an external file manager, I see /sdcard/Locus is almost empty, except for mapsOnline containing 3 sqlitedb files for the hike-and-bike map that showed briefly after restart

  • NOW the About once again shows "duplicate folder", see attached.

Have you tried OpenAndroMaps with the Elements (not Elevate) theme?

Elements is designed for sparsely-populated areas, and shows elements as soon as their data appears in the file, rather than keeping them selectively hidden until a higher zoom level.

https://www.openandromaps.org/en/legend/elevate-mountain-hike-theme

OAM are very similar to LoMaps, but - ironically - they render better in Locus than Locus' own maps.  That's because OAM and the Locus app both support MapsForge V4, but LoMaps are still stuck at V3.
