Tools / A 4x4 profile for LoRouter / BRouter
April 13, 2021, 20:01:47
I understand more profiles are on the way for the new LoRouter in LM4, but in the meantime...

I've found the existing car profiles to be extremely reluctant to route down an unpaved road, instead making ridiculously long detours to stay on pavement.  Internally, it appears to assign a speed of 1 or 2 km/h to unpaved roads, which is slower than walking.  To me, this seems like a bug.  Here in Canada, we have many unpaved roads where 80km/h is a comfortable speed; some are secondary highways.

Also, the existing profiles won't route on highway=track.  But sometimes a destination is at the end of a track, thus you can't route to it, unless you switch to an MTB profile.

Here, attached, is a tweaked version of an existing car profile that I've tweaked to fix both these issues.  I make no claims about its quality, as I've only managed to understand it well enough to make a few changes, and they seem to work for me.  If it works for you, all the better.  :)

Drop it in your Locus/router/profiles2 folder, then select it from the Routing Profile drop-down.

Maybe it's too late to affect the names of the LM4 tiers (that thread's entire lifetime seems to have been while I was asleep here in North America), but...

"Plain" suggests "ordinary"; that's the first thing I think when I see that word.  Plain as flat land is a very weak meaning over here.  May I suggest "Flatlands" instead?

(I'm not paying attention to LM4, but do get these posts on my RSS feed.)

"Turn on/off getting location" is sometimes using the wrong word in the current Pro as well, and has for some time.
1. View satellites while "getting location" active.
2. Turn off screen
3. Turn on screen, unlock*
-> "Turn on getting location" while actually getting location.

(* Two devices with Disable screen lock = basic)

PS, I had to think about why that prototype screenshot was bugging me...  Now I know.

There are things covering up parts of the map.  Four round things.  The map to me is #1, it's the reason for the app.  I have Locus set up to show a clean map rectangle, and all the cruft is outside of it, in panels where it belongs.  (Other than scale and invisible [!] copyright, but close enough.)

Also, I like BIG targets for the + and - buttons.  They're quite big now, but those fat round circles in the prototype look smaller and harder to hit, certainly harder with the left thumb.

My two euro-cents...  :)

With the two-finger zoom now default in any app I don't think the zoom buttons are needed except in particular use cases.

Disagree totally, sorry.

Two-finger zoom is a pain in the butt!  So is finding the hardware buttons.

If the on-screen zoom buttons ever disappear, I'll use an old version of the app in perpetuity.

Troubles & Questions / Re: Point is not stored
October 23, 2019, 22:18:07
Hi again.

"Nothing to download" happens a lot with the GC Offlinizer; many caches simply don't have any images.  I don't see anything unusual there.

I'll clarify my earlier comments.  G4L's "live map" feature creates temporary cache objects that aren't stored in any named folder; they can be expected to disappear soon.  I've never tried to "offlinize" a live-map cache and don't know what would happen; that would be making an expected-to-be-permanent change to something that'll disappear shortly.

If you want to "offlinize" caches, or manually make changes (eg adding multi waypoints), you should be doing this to permanently stored waypoints, eg in a named folder.  You can get caches into named folders by loading PQs, by bulk-downloading in G4L ("nearest"), or one-by-one using the copy-to feature from a live-map cache.

Hope that makes sense.  :)  I generally do everything offline with PQs, which works quite well.

Sounds like you're trying to make a permanent change to a temporary geocache object, one brought in via Geocaching4Locus.  Right?

Try saving the object to a folder (effectively making it permanent), then modifying it.  Or simply switch completely to offline caching using PQs.

Quote from: menion on September 29, 2019, 09:09:27I've spend almost two days on speed up of the cold start itself.

Holey moley, that's fast now!  No problems seen with RC2 on my Android 6 / Nexus 7 with its motley collection of maps, points, etc.

It was only a quick test, all I had time for.  Cheers..

I'm starting to really like your desertV4 theme.  Thank you very much!

There's a local urban road, highway=secondary, surface=asphalt, that appears to render as unpaved (dashed line, yellow / white).  The adjacent secondary road with no surface tag renders as solid yellow.  This is with a current OAM V4 map.

And one more suggestion for outdoorV4, if I may.  At Z14, highway=path is rendered, but highway=track (a larger path) does not.  I'd suggest rendering track at Z14 as well, because it looks odd to see paths but not tracks at that zoom.

PS, the road junctions look great in outdoorV4 now.  Thanks.

I really like the Outdoor theme, so thank you, especially for adapting it for V4.

If I can offer a few suggestions...

  • For some reason, highway=bridleway renders abnormally large.  For example, at N53 31.484 W113 32.897 on the OAM Alberta Canada V4 map.
  • Certain highway types, where they meet (eg, residential x service), are drawn such that they appear to be unconnected.  If you were to imagine the ways as pipes, water couldn't flow through the connection.  That's sent me into OSM a few times to double-check the data. ;D
  • There's no checkbox for boundaries and protected areas.  Given that the theme draws the name on each tile, and Locus still uses lots of tiles, this can lead to a display rather full of names.  It'd be nice to have the option to turn this off.
Thanks!

Yes, greatly appreciated!

Though I'll agree with John, a little less detail would be fine.  (I don't mind the current level of detail though.)  I only use the base map for orientation as I'm zooming in to somewhere.

Thus, more prominent borders would be useful.

And ... how do I say this tactfully? ... Z4 really stands out with the bold colors.  But I'm not interested in geology, just borders at that level.

But these are just minor nits.  This was a very welcome upgrade, thanks.

@Condor: G4L seems to get confused if you have both Pro and Beta installed.  Have you tried uninstalling Beta?

Hi Spellerberg.

I don't remember seeing a three-dot-menu anywhere in the app (old user manual?), but try this:

Tap the waypoint, then tap the box that pops up.  This shows the detail screen for the point.  Now tap the caret in the lower-right corner.

^
The first option is Edit.   :)

When changing coords, you can tap the little dot-in-circle icon; that'll give you a variety of ways to update the coords.

Enjoy.

Elsewhere (Quick Map Switch), you label vector maps as "Smart Choice" - which they are - and also as offline maps.

A little consistency might help.  Besides, anything that helps nudge people AWAY from using tiles, especially downloading massive amounts, is a good thing.  Right?

Troubles & Questions / Re: External cards

Don't try to "import" the map from that folder.  Just place it there, and Locus will see it automatically.
