Troubles & Questions / Re: X-treme Data Soak ??
March 31, 2011, 11:11:29
You can also use a program like 3G Watchdog to limit data usage.

Oh, I now realized the program is attached in the original post.

Actually I have never tried installing outside the market but it worked well after changing a setting.

The new release works perfectly so far. The fulltext search is great and not too slow even with 600+ waypoints. And the hide panel bug is gone now.

Will test a bit more later.

Is the new version in market? I can't see it ...

The remark about getting kidnapped was actually a joke! :-)

That said, I really don't think it is far out with such a feature. I myself have never had any problems whatsoever when hiking so it is not out of bad experience I suggest it. But if you have done any serious hiking you will know the standard precautions: tell someone where you intend to go, bring a compass, map, whistle and a torch, enough food and water etc. Especially if you walk alone. Having a security means in a GPS App is just a logical expansion.

Preparing for problems is not the same as expecting them. You probably wear a seat belt in you car even though you don't expect an accident.

Furthermore, this feature has also another side: it is a social thing to let your friends follow your walkabouts. That is not interesting to me though, but it is for others: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=411

Good idea with the movement filter. If you are able to move, you will probably be able to call someone too. Unless, of course, you are drifting around in a boat - or is kidnapped :)

Oops! Yes, I of course meant NiMH. I haven't had NiCd for years :-)

However, I do not agree on the memory effect of NiMH. After a number of recharging cycles, they start to loose capacity. But that is not what you mean with memory effect?

Oh - I think I know what you mean now. The problem that you have to fully discharge the cell before you recharge it? Yes, that is much better with NiMH. But in lot of instruction manuals, like for my electric tootbrush, they urge you to completely discharge it now and then.

Looking forward to this too. I made a test walk today and I couldn't make move to next point work at all. Even when it showed only 1 m to the point, it still didn't change to the next point.

Locus is really getting good thanks to your great efforts :-) I have rarely seen such an active developer!

I agree fully on the AA chargers. There are only meant as an emergency and I bought them because they were very cheap and actually does work. Sometimes getting just another bar on the batteri indicator can save your day!

What I have found is that NiCd batteries work better than normal Alkaline batteries because they are able to retain their voltage much better during the recharge cycle. But then they die, they die quickly ;-)

Interesting post, svartbjorn. I agree that 2 mins sampling should be enough for most walking.

I have a solar panel which in fact works, but as you point out, I have been testing it in direct bright sunlight which the unit perpedicular to the sun. I don't think it is worth bringing it on my trip for the same reasons you mention. It justs add extre weight and will perhaps only give me a couple of hours more juice. Instead I have bought 2 spare batteries.

I also have a handful os these small chargers which works very well driven by a single AA cell: http://www.popgadget.net/images/emergen ... harger.jpg

I bought them for arund 3.5 USD and I use them for small presents :-)

Great! I look forward to see it in market so I can try :-)

Troubles & Questions / Re: GPS Location sharing

This is quite similar to my wish here: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=408

Sure. I also have Maverick Pro which is a fine app too.

No I expect a very nice and beautiful walk! And I don't at all expect you do implement it before my trip :)

It just happens that people sometimes get injured etc. in remote areas. After all, why bring a GPS at all if it wasn't to make the trip easier and safer. A few years ago, everyone could do with just a map and a compass :-)

The ideas keep popping up!

I just got a good idea (IMO!)

If you are hiking in a deserted area with little chance to meet other people, it could be a life saver if Locus could at regular intervals send out SMS messages with your current position to someone else. Then in case you get into trouble and are not able to call for help for some reason, your friend will always know where you have been recently. Then it would be easier for a rescue party to find you, knowing in which area to look.

ideally, this feature should have options for using either SMS or data logging using a simple HTTP GET request. It would be up to the user to implement the server side script to catch the coordinates (but that is easy).

In countries abroad, SMS would probably be the best alternative since mobile data is insanely expensive.

Such a feature could in fact save someone's life one day.

Hi Menion, the waypoint file is sent to you. The file on the website is password protected since it is for the book owners only (the passwords are words from specific pages in the book).

I look very much forward to my hike and to trying out Locus for real! I will most certainly come back with a lot of relevant info for you and I will write a "report" of how it was hiking with Locus  ;)
