Die AFA und die offizielle Version haben die gleiche technische Versionsnummer.
Das kann klemmen. Sobald DU nur noch AFAs nutzt (ohne Google Play-Updates) funktioniert das wie gehabt - update.
Wenn DU schon die neue Version installiert hast ist das m.E. wirklich nur durch de-install und AFA-Install zu haben.
Voher alle Daten auf dem PC sichern ... Oder zumindest auf SD-Karte. Wie Balloni schreibt, TC und X-plore können all dies - sofern Du ihnen AFA-Permission gibst.

nach deiner Beschreibung gehe ich davon aus, dass Android 11+ auf deinen Geräten ist.

Ganz schlimm ist es, dass m.W. kein Android-Dateimanager diese Privaten Ordner beschreiben kann/darf,

mit TotalCommander und X-Plore geht zumindest noch manches oder per USB mit dem PC

Wenn du aber wieder wie gewohnt das "alte" Verhalten haben möchtest und dein Gerät dir erlaubt "fremde" apk´s zu installieren dann schau mal in die Signatur von menion, da findest du unter "download" apk´s sowohl für V3.xx als auch für V4.xx mit dem Zusatz Afa das bedeutet soviel viel wie >  all file access
Wenn du diese Versionen dann auch zukünftig nutzen möchtest musst du das Autoupdate bei GooglePlay abschalten und neue Versionen von hier von Zeit zu Zeit manuell installieren.

I do not think the size of the external sd-card is the problem.

On my Samsung Galaxy Note4, running Android Stock ROM 6.0.1, I have an extenal 64GB sd-card installed.
Downloading LoMaps to this sd-card or running backups from Locus on the external sd-card works as expected without any problem.
Even my "backup device", a Samsung Galaxy S4, running Android 5.0.1 Stock ROM, do not have any problems with its installed 64 GB external sd-card when downloading LoMaps or running backups from Locus to the external sd-card.

Would you start a feature request at Locus HelpDesk? My vote is sure for that feature.
Or should I start the feature request at Locus HelpDesk?

PS: Forgot to mention, that the folders on the external sd-cards are named ""/extLocus/backup/" and "/extLocus/mapsVector". I. e. Folders created by me. I wrote  read somewhere that Locus might get problems, if the root-folder on external sd-card also named "/Locus/".
