I understand that you do not want to replicate Wikipedia, Menion.
My point is: you have Wikipedia references in LoPoints already (though partially only, and I trust your team will fill in all available data over time), but they are flat text and not live links.
Now, having offline on your device
- maps
- LoPoints
- Wikipedia (via Aard2 e.g.)
you have EVERYTHING in your hand already to make it work, EXCEPT a live link (just look at the Locus Wikipedia search; there it works like a charm) with the right Android intent to fire up the existing offline Wikipedia App on your device.
Easy piece of cake, right?

AFA stands for "All Files Access" and is needed for users who
- use a non-standard root folder for Locus (like the earlier /Locus/...) AND
- run a device with Android 11+ (I assume this applies to a majority of users)

The one with the shortest name can only use the standard locations (/Android/data or /Android/media - I consider the latter best practises, as good file managers can read/write there, while Google blocks access to the former. (There are geek level work-arounds for that, too, but I won't go there here.))

Leaves DEV - which is a non-AFA version (unfortunately!) but with additional debugging features. I only found out by installation. There is no documentation I am aware of.

What I was hoping for was offline search for Wikipedia. The second step does work. Clicking on Wikipedia, I can select Aard2, which is a fully offline Wikipedia. However, switching off mobile data runs into an error.
"Always on" assumption is an ideology that will fall flat on its face, sooner or later ...
If I recall correctly, you have links to Wikipedia in the LoPoint database, right?

backup+backup would be a highly sophisticated SQL exercise that I would NOT recommend.

A safe way is to
1) backup BOTH waypoint and track DBs (at least partially (?) done as I read from above)
2) put the SMALLEST DB into its place in the Locus folder tree
3) select everything you want to preserve and use the "export" function of Locus to get the stuff (POIs and tracks) into files
4) now exit Locus put the LARGE DB into place
5) do all IMPORTS from those files.
Done.

Did you look at https://www.openandromaps.org/en/downloads ?

Just install theme and desired maps from there with the Locus related links. This will create tasks inside Locus that do the installation work.

Locus 3.7 is in fact what was called Pro years back, hence that step was correct.
Your Laptop backup, is that the zip from Locus backup function? Or a copy paste of everything you found under /Locus?

Yes, we are talking about the same.

And I also think that the icons in the list can double on size without increasing the text spacing. 

I see two sort options:
- distance
- updated
Those can be used for next/previous selection and should cover most use cases, I believe.

And I fully agree re. wasted space, i.e. the thumbnails should be larger. Currently the top folder needs 100 MB for 10,000 photos. That is nothing. Doubling the thumbnail size could take 400 MB or so. Absolutely no issue.

PS: while display on the map is really cool, viewing a series of photos is painful. Always go back to the map, tap, get new list, maybe hit the same photo again if you are not careful, ...
Do I miss a trick here, or do we have to ask Menion to give us swipe left/right through the list (which has good sorting preferences,  BTW).
