OK, also die Pro-Version. Und es geht anders!
Nimm die AFA-Version vom Google Drive, allerdings anderer Link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/18hLjvcFkK8n_AMRfiZzj9PqCU0RmxIRE
Vorher die aktuelle Version deinstallieren ohne Rückstände.

Welche Version hast Du installiert ?

Maps / The OAM world map Winter edition is online
February 27, 2022, 18:31:48
https://www.openandromaps.org/en/downloads/general-maps

These are the major changes in version 202202-1.0:
- The OAM base maps are from Feb. 2022 for Europe and from Jan. 2022 for the rest of the planet.
- In the high North hill shading showed extreme distortions from earlier data sources. Current elevation data provides a much better representation. In the end, hill are the only relevant thing of notice in those regions ...
- Missing tiles around the date line (+/-180 degrees) are available now. Many TXs to Emux (Mapsforge) and Robert (MOBAC) for amending their toolsets.
- The old naming scheme for world maps is no longer offered.

As always, feedback is very welcome.

Hi Steve,
in the context of Locus et.al. .map indicates a VECTOR map following Mapsforge format definition.
Such maps are crappy up to zoom level 10 or so, yet highly efficient when it comes to storage requirements, because the rendering is done on the dvice. Up to ZL 22 if you want.
Your description tells that you are dealing with RASTER maps. They are "costly" (size) for higher (detail) zoom levels.
The map your second link is pointing to is a raster map, i.e. an array on images.
I am sure that NZ has all data that you see as discrete value sets in a huge database, which is the source for the ArcGIS rendering.
If you get access to this data AND they can provide that in OpenStreetMap format, then you win. Even if they would give you a text export and their data model, you could convert to OSM, so you can use the OSM tools to build VECTOR maps.
They would be easy to digest for Locus, but need real processing power (and knowledge) to produce ...

On EXT SD even x-plore cannot write; on INT SD it can. You have to give permission - once.

Alternatively you can USB connect to a PC - all files accessible.

@Mapper: you need to use the special LMP AFA version from Google Drive to have AFA power.
Google denied MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE privilege for LMP ...

What's the issue with the UI?
Two panes you can switch by swipe, select a file or folder and do something with it.
You can play with it with some copied data, so nothing breaks and you learn.
Then enjoy the power.
I agree that should not be needed for normal app users. But the transition to cope with those new Android 11 limitations is painful. For the creators as well as for the users with the fallout of it.
Once Menion properly deals with /Android/media folders on that upper level, thing will become much easier, also in the interaction between Apps that need the maps and SRTM mass data, and should not be forced to duplicate it.

1) not - yet - as crazy as iOS - you can do a lot with the right tools. Pls. install x-plore as a start.
2) which version of LM are you using? 4 or Pro?
3) AFA means all files accessible. x-plore has that, LM4 as well (for now)
4) pls. tell the LM storage setup: settings-misc--default directories. Main directory and thevsub-folders. Once we understand your setup we can advise.
5) x-plore can handle everything, except writing files to EXT SD private folders. Only for the latter you'd need the PC based escape

Without harm means that the app is not important to me.

@Andrew: Menion has extended the logging significantly. Long tap on the low left Hamburger menu, tap the logging option and switch on the first 3 of them.
You can see quite a bit yourself what is happening under the cover... And Menion will see even more ;-)
