@menion
Thanks. Those are the correct steps, except it is any OAM Mapsforge V4 map.
I don't think the source of the theme mattered - I was working with my Voluntary Mapsforge theme.

I'm afraid I had to uninstall Locus and reinstall it to solve the problem.

@voldapet. Understood, but it seems very strange to me that this is only initiated on going from ZL13 to ZL14. If it's so difficult to control, why does it not happen under other circumstances? Ah well.

Minor change to only show survey points on peaks. Download from the first post.

@voldapet: turning off automatic map loading for vector maps does indeed stop this effect.

Edit: furthermore, it is connected with the fact that I have maps with overlapping coverage in this area. LoMaps Scotland, OAMaps UK_Scotland, and OAMaps Great Britain. If I disable any two of the maps, the effect doesn't happen. (It may be worth noting that UK_Scotland has contour intervals of half the other two maps.)

Edit2: I can confirm that the extra contour lines are due to *both* the standard and the higher resolution sets displaying at the same time.

Follow the instructions above the line in the first post. Ignore everything below the horizontal line. There is no need to generate your own routing data as you can download and install the two files you need directly from the two download links given.

Thanks. I hadn't realised that. I've added a comment to the first post to point that out.

Apologies for such a quick update but I've realised that many of the wilderness huts (bothies) in Scotland are mapped as both "wilderness huts" and "basic_hut" shelters. I've now modified the two Voluntary themes to prioritise showing (a) if the hut is private (b) if it is a basic shelter (for example, no fire) (c) if it is a true wilderness hut. I think this conveys the best information and hope it works elsewhere. This update changes only wilderness huts and if you are not interested in them you can skip this update.
The theme files are zipped and attached to the  first post in this thread.

There are two web links to the keys and also two zip files attached to the  first post in this thread. The zip files contain the themes.

New version available in the  first post in this thread.
Summary: Continued improvement in Mapsforge v 4 theme. Better and more specific displays of mountain huts and shelters, especially with Hiking style. Improvement with display of contours, peaks, tunnels, mini roundabouts, toll roads, national borders and more.

I have just checked in Locus. Using BRouter navigation in Locus, I can choose between Locus profiles (from @poutnikl, I believe) and BRouter profiles. The Locus profiles can be further customised using advanced settings. By experiment, it seems to me that by default the various Locus walking profiles take scenic routes while the built-in BRouter profile takes the shortest route, as @poutnikl says.

In BRouter advanced settings, Locus offers the following relevant profiles, which can be applied to different buttons, along with a choice of icons:
Locus Profiles
- Hiking-Alpine-SAC4
- Hiking-Mountain-SAC3
- Walking-SAC1-SHRP
- Walking
BRouter Profiles
- Shortest

Again, by experiment, it seems that the BRouter standard profile "Shortest" is its standard walking profile.

So Locus can be readily customised to offer a shortest walking route and a pleasant walking route, if one should so desire, as in the setup screen below. For details of how to do this, I refer you to the manual!

I suspect the built in Shortest would not take a footpath that is not an allowed route for bikes? Or maybe cars?

On the other hand, I can imagine a real life situation where I would prefer a quick walk over a pleasant one. Suppose I am in an unfamiliar city and I need to get to an appointment and an short of time. I would really want the app to guide me by the quickest walking route regardless of the surroundings.

It is simply a matter of the weightings in your chosen routing engine. Brouter, Graphhopper etc. With Brouter offline you can tweak the weightings yourself if you really want to.

Depending on the routing engine you use, it most likely intentionally deprecates walking alongside main roads in order to give you a more pleasant walking experience.
