Sometimes it is really hard to get know how the new features work. Where can I get explicite information on the following? I did't get it work with the wide scattered infos in different topics and answers... :.(

- Map shading integrated as full public feature and added support for shading also for all online maps!
After activating I don't see any differences.
- official announcment of offline POI database!  Some hints here? :   viewtopic.php?f=26&t=3267
The POI DB file is placed in the vectormap directory and renamed. What now?


Hope someone can give some hints. thanks

A nice future improvement after this feature arrives might be an option to use a sqlite map...

Sorry if this sounds annoying. Using a bitmaps targets exactly my demands. Maybe not now, maybe in the future..

However, I hate to see maps slow loading and/or crashing on low powered phones, level 7-9 is most critical in urban areas so I try to avoid huge polygones and all tags not _really_ necessary.
In more remote areas like whole SouthAmerica, Africa, Asia, Russia and Iceland the mapping is much more detailed in lower zoom levels (wood appears on level 8) - thats why I avoid the "zoom-min" in my themes and determine the map-appearence by the tag-mapping while rendering.
There are 7 different tag-mappings for the openandromaps adjusted to the needs of the area maps are covering.
... But only of you use map+rendering tool (like locus) without customizsation.. With a custom map theme where the wood (for example) is disabled for that zoom level can do the optimisation for low performant hardware device (Hey... This could be a new feature request for locus: speed optimized vector map themes...)

As an alternative suggestion this leads me to a feature request I did mont ago: Different Map sources (vector or bitmap) for each zoom level  :mrgreen: . For example "vector map" on higher zoom and the lower end "bitmap renderings", which looks sometimes better than vector..

Hello! Very nice to meet all the important people here  :P

Don't get me wrong. All maps are very good. Until now I used the vector cards from jurajs here. But now they are quite outdated. Locus paied maps are very similar so currently I switched over to them. Openandro is the next to use.


The following comparison is between the locus payed vector map and openandro.

  • Higher Zoom levels are always good and including contour lines its very very good!

Suggested improvment in Openandro:
  • Zoom Level 8 and 9 should always have wood area drawed. It's easier to orient on the card with it.
  • Amound of village / city naming differs. The locus map naming is better in Zoom Level 8 and 9. Isn't it? (Maybe openandro is better for other resolutions?)[/b]

      There is no hillshade map for locus to download not even a paied one.
      The payed version of *smand can download a build in hillshade map (sqlite). I'm using this in Locus offline. It would be great of someone could offer a hillshade map for locus, too.
      Unfortunately the *smand hillshade is available till Zoomlevel 11 only. Locus does not use the last Level 11 for Zoomlevel 12 and higher. So it is not visible. A new locus software improvment could use the last level availible for the other levels and streching the bitmap. It may not make sense to generate a hillshare till the deepest zoom level.

Don't you do any more updates? Is it planned to get updates?

You map of 2012 is still better quality with the data included in the zoom levels in comparison to the maps from www.openandromaps.org

Hello.

Inspired by the contour maps and themes: "Hiking V0.6" and  "Classic Map (google style)" I generated a good locking map more suitable for common use, city traveling and sight seeing. The contur line maps are still working.

In comparison to the mapsforge default theme, I like to have more information visible on each zoom level. The Hiking theme appeard to me best in its render "clarity" so this was my starting point.

Generated on my phone: 3,7inch screen size; 480x854

- Base theme is Hiking V0.6
- some pois appears earlier, others later
  i.e:
   earlier: parking, fast-food, bakery, sight-seeing objects, shopping centres,...
   later: hotel, post office, (everything not needed for sight seeing tours...)
- area names appears earlier like city, sub-orb, village, park, ...
- slight changes of font properties

Feature request: Possibility to mix different maps sources, single assigned for a zoom level.

Hi.
I am permanentely using a mixture of two different maps types. The First is a sqlite created (bitmap) map from google maps download with mobac and the Second is a vector map created with osmosis.

The reason is easy: google maps looks better on low zoom levels but it is too big to download down to deep zoom levels. A vectormap is essential when using a whole country with detail in high zoom leven. When zooming down, the vectormaps of OSM has better detail quality than google maps and much better poi quality.

A way to create a "new map" with different map sources, one assigned to each zoom level is the key to sucess.
The "new map" could be just like an xml file or so referencing the .sqlite or .map files on the sd card. For me this would be an unique feature.  :ugeek:


Map example:

A) sqlite, googemaps (created with mbac), ~3GB
Zoom level 1-6 whole world
Zoom level 7-8 whole EU
Zoom level 8-10 whole Germany
Zoom level 11-14 selected areas in Germany
Zoom level >=15 not suitable due to size

B) mapsforge vectormap,OSM, germany complete, 1.3GB
- ALL Zoom levels down to view with big amount of pois visible. (I think the pois in OSM are best in comparison to all other possible map sources)
- Self re-created with osmosis. I wanted more details to come visible at earlier zoom levens than the avialable .map files. (I don't know the locus vector downloads if  the element visibility is different to the other free vector downloads..)

Idea:
A+B)
- Creating a map which include zoom level + coresponding map source for example in an xml file...
- Zoom level 1-14: Map A (sqlite) is choosen automatically
- Zoom level 15+: Map B (vector) is choosen automatically
