Hi Everyone,

A big thank you to everyone that tried out the recent v20231013 release (it contained a lot of changes I have made over the last 2.75 years!) and thank you everyone for kindly reporting back to me the bugs/issues and things that could be improved further.

I've incorporated the changes and have just updated the sticky "[Theme] OS Map" topic thread with the latest release (see post #1 for updated release notes and details).

I'm hoping I can get this version of the theme into the Locus Map store to make it easier to download and install soon.

Themes - Vector maps / [Theme] "Settler"
April 10, 2023, 20:24:40
A theme that I have been making for the second year and now use with OAM all the time.

Once upon a time it was an "active RT5" theme. Then I needed playgrounds, mountains, via ferrata, other colors, etc... and I began to change a lot for myself. Maybe someone will like the theme.

Download - https://github.com/andrey-nekrasov/oam_theme_settler/

ps. The description may not be very good, because google translate :)

I have used OpenAndroMaps for years and I got so excited about the maps that I wanted to understand more details. Yes, my OpenOutdoorMaps are nearly the same but

  • I was interested to understand the making of mapsforge maps. Since I did not find a comprehensive and detailed information on the flow of making these kinds of maps I tried to document the process in quite some detail.
  • Nobody has to use the maps. This is a free offer as many other maps. Everyone can decide.
  • You can choose any map area you want and generate a map.
  • If you need an immediate update of your map you can do it.
  • When one understands the map making process you can adjust/add/remove/consolidate tags for your purposes. Therefore, the current OpenOutdoorMaps have differences compared to other maps. I. e. there is more detail information on parking areas, road access and so on.
  • Since I am using a rather old device I was interested in maps with smaller file sizes. This is the reason why I omitted tags which are not interesting for me. In this way the OpenOutdoorMaps are considerable smaller in file (storage) size.

Choose any map you like and be happy.

Hi guys, I've just uploaded a new Beta version 4.6.1.1 for the test. It has a united SVG rendering engine across the whole app so all MapsForge versions and also Locus Map itself now use same system.

If possible, give it a try and let me know if all is now correctly rendered. Thank you!

Just to mention. I have generated a few maps for the northern alps region. You will find download links here:

https://www.maiwolf.de/openoutdoormap/index.html#karten

There are maps for:
TEST (part of upper Bavaria)
Bayern (Bavaria)
Baden-Württemberg (Baden-Wuerttemberg)
Österreich (Austria)
Schweiz (Switzerland)

In many weeks of testing I have developed a Windwos batch script to generate maps for Locus which are very close to maps probided by OpenAndroMaps. This script enables you to generate a topographic map for any area of the world.

The script and all necessary software will run on a "normal" Windows 10 PC. All details will be found on my website. Although the website is in German, you can translate the most parts easily and the script inself is mostly in English. You will find download links for the map-generation-script, all necessary other scripts and download links for all software packages.

The maps generated with this script will be named OpenOutdoorMap (OOM) . There is also a test-map for download.

I am happy to get any feedback und suggestions.

Regards
Bernard

Cursors / Icons / Voices / [CURSORS] Circle cursors
January 05, 2022, 12:52:38
I created this cursor and having been using it for many years. I thought perhaps others might like to use it, so here it is.

the symbols used are:
  - empty red circle when stationary and your position is based on network signal.
  - red circle with small inner circle when stationary and your GPS position is locked.
  - red circle with rotating arrow when you are moving.
  - red cross when you scroll away from your position.
  - simple red/white compass symbol.
  - darkened/smoked field of view overlay is used for the show view option.

See attached preview (note blue dashed outlines are not displayed, just the size/edges of the images).

It's the Simple SVG interpreter that has a limited instruction set. I don't know how to deal with this other than by trial and error but generally open the SVG file Inkscape, ungroup everything, convert all to paths, combine paths as far as possible, simplify paths, clean up the document and save as a simple SVG (not an Inkscape SVG). That seems to work but someone may give a better answer.

- international cycling routes: dark blue ██
- national cycling routes: red ██
- regional cycling routes: light blue ██

In other styles, hiking routes can be emphasised in light green ██, cycle routes emphasised in light blue ██. MTB routes emphasised in violet ██.

To the Locus and OpenAndroMaps community,

I have generated big updates for my OpenAndroMaps Locus themes. The new themes "Outdoor" and "Desert" will replace all my previous themes (outdoor, desert, navigation, outdoorV4, desertV4).
The themes got many new features, improvements and corrections. You will find more details on my website www.maiwolf.de/locus/ [in German]. There is now also an online legend for the themes as well as a PDF download version of the legend.

Always download the newest version on: www.maiwolf.de/locus/

I am happy for any comments, suggestions and ideas. I will try to constantly improve the themes in the future.

Themes - Vector maps / Re: [Theme] VanLifeMapV4
January 18, 2021, 09:44:11
It is quite a few things:
- I like the colors of internal Locus theme and Mapy.cz and I want these colors for v4 maps.
- I draw fill of all the areas first and afterwards all their outlines so if there is one area over the other I can see at least the outline.
- I add some new patterns for areas and I intend to add more so that the areas are more distinguishable.
- I draw dashed line over the rivers if they are only seasonal.
- I draw the rivers with slightly different color than the reservoirs so you can see the riverbeds as if the reservoir was empty.
- I draw all the poi even if there is no space so they are overlapping but you can see everything without zooming.
- I made different icons for drinkable and not drinkable springs.
- I have a different way to draw hiking and cycling paths and their difficulty (just for hiking for now)
- I can hide all the fill on the areas (background) and use the map as overlap for satelite imaging.
- I have more visible colors for protected areas so I can see clearly where the border of the protected area is.

and possibly more differences :)

Themes - Vector maps / [Theme] active RT5
November 06, 2020, 18:48:48
Hello Locus users,

Here I provide you with my current theme, my goal was to imitate the style of the Outdooractive map, before there was already my HiLo theme which was then further developed as active RT3, but then I stopped working on this theme and have Instead, to develop a new theme based on the possibilities of the Rendertheme Version 5 and the Mapsforge maps in Version 4, for this I also tinkered a corresponding generator. You can always find the latest version of all of this on Github.
https://github.com/FrankSchoeneck/active_RT5

I tried to keep the look close to the original style from Outdooractive.com in the newer look 'OSM-Summer'.

This theme is not Locus specific and can be used in all apps and programs that use Mapsforge.

Update 15.11.2020
XML are now with structur and now all symbol sizes are set by symbol-percent tag.

Themes - Vector maps / New style: FzOAM
June 27, 2020, 17:44:03
Hello, fellow walkers, runners, bikers, hikers and mountaineers!

While searching for the best map and theme source I've found two great projects:
1. OpenAndroMaps is already a huge one, with well tuned maps and many themes (Thank You!).
Unfortunately in my opinion, none of them was easy to read and/or detailed enough.
2. Freizeitkarte on the other hand isn't that widespread, but is an impressive project (Thank You!).
It is far more detailed and has really good themes.
The only major flaw was that the theme details appear too late when zooming.

I wasn't brave enough to tune the zoom level for every detail,
but tried adding the useful landscape details to the feature rich Elements theme for OAM.
Most of the textures are directly borrowed or heavily inspired of FZK.
The documents and key file are slightly tuned accordingly.
I am providing the result if anyone finds it useful.
I don't have the time and talent to support and develop the new theme.
If someone decides to adopt it, I will be very happy!
Until then I hope You enjoy it.

Happy journeying everyone!

Often, you don't need something fancy - just some generic markers. Built-in, Locus only offers down arrows, crosses, dots (open and filled) and traingles in 4 colors. And low-res.
I took some time to make tons of icons in better resolution, different sizes and many colors. Please use the attached iconpacks freely (CC BY SA 3.0):

  • Arrows: Arrows in 8 directions (up, down, left, right and in-between), 4 sizes and 10 colors.
  • Dots & Crosses: Dots, Donuts (dots w/hole), crosses (X's) and some extras, in 3-4 sizes and ca. 17 colors.
  • Markers: Google-style balloon pins (with and w/o star), needles in 3 sizes, pushpins in 4 sizes, all in ca. 16 colors
  • Flags: All ISO country flags plus dependent territories and some subdivisions (like Scotland, Wales, etc.), but just as-is (no border or anything)
All packs apart from "Flags" have English and German sections and tooltips (long tap).

@Menion: Feel free to replace internal low-res icons. Also, please add to the store - free, of course. Thx!

Update: Now I did improve the flags, with continents as sections and tooltips, adding some missing ones. While they're also free to use, I would however not like to see them in the Locus store, because some descriptions may be politically, well, difficult (eg. Palestine).
