Thanks for the Head's Up on that. I did an edit and then imported the file back. I then exported it as a GE file, the text changes all seemed to work, but the pictures were no longer present for some reason.

Thanks everyone. It sounds then like Menion's suggestion would be the way to go, because I want to take the text that I currently have in the Name field, and move it to the description field. I get the impression that I can then use Notepad++ to edit that file before moving it back again in it's new and improved flavour.

(Although I am doing this for my job, I am using my personal device with Locus. Now my co-workers are all complaining that their Gov't issue Blackberries cannot do what I am doing with my ancient SGSII and Locus.)

I have a points file with 55 entries in it. I made the mistake of adding text after the Point number. I should have only placed the number in the Icon & Name field, then the details about the point in the description.

I know I can edit the points in Locus on the Android device, but that is painfully slow and tedious. Is there a way I can open the file that contains the points after I transfer it to a Windows PC, and edit it with a Windows program before moving the edited file back to the Android device?

Thanks balloni,

I got the PM, but have not had a chance to look into it yet as I was away on my days off. It is interesting however as I was voice dictating notes about the work needed on the gates, and then letting Google Voice transcribe the audio to text in the Description field of the Locus file. As they have a very cheap data plan on our phones it did not matter that it was using data to do the speech to text translation, but as you know it requires a lot of post-dictation editing to correct all the errors.

I'll also send you a PM with a link to one of the files which perhaps you can take a look at and comment on.

Thanks for that.

I did not consider this to be a bug, the Forum Title also said "&Questions", have I posted my question in the wrong place?

You are right, it is a .kmz file, and the 800 pixel option in the config files Ballonis suggestion has been a great help. Fortunately I had those options checked, so it seemed to work well (too bad Google does not have an option to rotate images).

Now I need to clean up my Points files: correct grammar, spelling, and enhance descriptions, etc. Is it possible to edit the points file with a text editor on my computer perhaps?

Thanks again.

Yes, that is a very good suggestion and tip. Over the next year various staff will undertake to go out and do maintenance on the gates when they have time. Being able to share via Google should be an effective way.

I'll give it a try when I get back on Friday. Thanks very much.

Troubles & Questions / Best way to generate report
October 01, 2014, 18:40:10
I have been working on a project compiling an inventory of wildlife exit gates in a National Park along the main highway which is fenced. When I create a new Point, I make notes about what maintenance work needs to be done to the gate, and I have attached a picture of every gate to the Point. Now it is time to generate a report, and I'm not sure the best way to go about it. I've exported the Points to a KML File and looked at it in Google Earth and can see the descriptions and a thumbnail, but not sure what to do about the pictures.

Any suggestions on the best way to generate a report from my data file in Locus would be appreciated.

Wow, that is an amazing response time, thanks very much.

I've been searching through the settings and cannot seem to figure out how to set UTM's to be my default format for when I create waypoints?

ALso while I'm on the topic, is there a way to create a shortcut for making a quick waypoint without having to drill down through the menu screens?

Troubles & Questions / Import Icons with .GPX file
September 16, 2012, 17:27:12
I created a .gpx file in my device and changed the icons to four different types for 18 points. I then moved the gpx file to my spouses devices. I thought I would just be able to copy it over, but I found I had to export and import the file to move it to another device, did I do that right?

Also my icons on the 2nd device were reset to the generic 'i' icon. Is there a way to copy a points file to another device and save the icons as well (for example using a different format)?

Thanks for the reply.

I played with the settings and I got the impression that the distance rings only worked for your actual current location? Can I make them work offline from the cursor position? For example when I am planning a trip? At the moment when I load the map for the trip I am planning it tells me I'm 49567 meters (my actual distance from my house to that location) from a given waypoint for example.

I've been trying to figure out if I can overlay dynamic grid lines onto my screen?

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll keep plugging away. I don't know how to do it but probably others that are more skilled than I am have figured out a way to download the maps they want from Orux and then convert them to another format perhaps.

And I know it has already been suggested but also what about distribution via Torrents? You can use S3 to cap a torrent until there are enough seeds and then shut it down. Also I have been able to set up a seedbox in a virtual server on an Amazon Elastic Cloud Instance (EC2), which has the advantage of a very large bandwidth pipe where you see upload speeds measured at mb/s not kb/s. In one weekend I was able to upload about 50GB from uTorrent to build my ratio with one of the trackers I use and the total cost at the end was roughly about $18.00 I think. If you want to play with this they have a Free Tier you can use to experiment that will not cost you anything for the first 15GB per month that is transferred out.

If I can be of any help in this regard I'd be happy to assist.

THanks menion,

As mentioned I'm just getting aquainted with Android app's and trying to figure these questions out. I live in the Canadian Rockies where contour lines and some backcountry features are important to have. Unfortunately for me, the only OpenSource maps that I found so far that have contours are OpenCycle, which I cannot download in Locus, (but for some reason seem to be able to in Orux). However even they are not adequate, in some places the glaciers  and hiking trails are missing for example. So that means I am left with NTS raster maps as pretty much my only option. That's why I'm trying to figure out why the apparent difference difference in file sizes and features between the various bitmap formats that seem to exist at the same zoom level (EG: ozi/orux/locus=4MB/26MB/44MB at level 15). I understand that it is not your fault that for example the servers do not allow for downloading of tiles. I am getting the impression that while Locus is a very comprehensive and powerful program, the strengths of Locus are primarily to be found with using online maps.

I also noted that you have just set up a new server. I recently also wanted to increase bandwidth on a server we were running and we moved all our sites into the Cloud on an AMazon S3 drive. At $.12 cents per GB data transfer cost (and $14 cents per month per GB for storage) you may want to consider setting up a tile server on Amazon S3.

Last, I would appreciate it if you could elaborate on what the vector add-in does. Would it allow me for example to bypass the the OpenCycle download restriction and download tiles directly from your new server?

Thanks again for your assistance
