Title: Creating custom maps from png/gif/pdf?
Post by: davr on July 20, 2011, 19:22:15
Hi,

Is there a way to create a custom map for use in Locus, from an image of a map downloaded off a website? For example trail maps from park websites like
http://www.ebparks.org/files/parks/chab ... 0w_32c.gif (http://www.ebparks.org/files/parks/chabot/anthony_chabot_map_2550w_32c.gif)

I found I could do it with Orux Maps, there's a tool "OruxMapsDesktop" that lets you import an image, specify lat/long coordinates and match them up to x/y pixel coordinates, and then it outputs a sqlite DB for use with OruxMaps. I would like either:
A) A tool that does the same thing for Locus, or
B) Be able to load Orux SQLite maps into Locus somehow (either natively, or via a tool that converts them to Locus format)

It's handy to be able to look at a GPS and see your location on the official park map which has all the trails marked...other sources such as OSM or MyTopo often don't have all the trails marked.

Thanks!

I agree that would be awesome. In the meantime, try out Maprika. Let us know what you think!

Would like to warm up this discussion/question especially for pdf.
Is there a solution known how to use a map from a .pdf file in Locus?
There are lots of public areas which offer maps as a pdf, just one example out of thousands available: http://www.nps.gov/arch/planyourvisit/u ... RCHmap.pdf (http://www.nps.gov/arch/planyourvisit/upload/ARCHmap.pdf)

I have another request. Don't you know a way how to duplicate a person? :)

I was already looking some time ago on a way, how to read PDF (better GeoPDF) files in Android. I think it's possible but it need some time. And this is what I don't have. So for now, I wish you good luck with searching for a simple way to reuse these maps ;) and who knows what will come in locus development ...
