Hi Menion,
can you pls. state your findings clearly re. EXISTING usage of root level map folders on internal and external SD (i.e. no re-install).
The question behind the question is, if an update will screw up the Locus install into unusable because of capacity limits (maps distributed on both, internal and external SD).
You mentioned in one post that the API 30 would tolerate existing access. But for how long?
There is need for clarity before people dare an update ...
TXs and cheers
Michael

Sure ...

Situation is:
- you have installed any of the older versions running on so-called API 29 (so anything before 4.5.0)
- then you update on any new version 4.5.0+
- system grants a special exception to this "update"! to access app old data in the root of the external memory. I was not able to find out if there is any time limit, but I think it isn't. This exception is not granted for new installs. So in case, you re-install the app, it lost this kind of access.
- question is, if any future update of the app does not remove this exception as well, I hope it doesn't. Anyway, because it is not described correctly on Google dev sites, we rather push users to transfer data into private dir as soon as possible.

Is my explanation clear?

Btw. did you notice that the latest version allows moving "mapsVector" into SD card/private directory?

TXs for your quick response, Menion.

As I was not sure about the risks, but had understood well that there is no way back, I avoided betas this time (other than all the betas before since years ...)

I will try on by A11 tablet next week. But let me also understand what below "btw" means in detail:
does this mean that ONLY the mapsvector could be moved to external SD private folder, while the other Locus folders go to the internal SD private folder?
Or did I misunderstand here?

Do a backup of whole "Locus" folder if you want to be sure.

Anyway, you understand it well. Based on the push in the last few days, I was looking at how to do it and found that it won't be so hard at all. So now, the app offers move of custom directories with new options and it looks like this (check screenshot).

On the A11+, the third option won't be available of course.

Really COOL, Menion, TXs a lot !!

Related question: if I (need to) put some maps into this external SD private folder, would it still be possible to ADD (via map manager) a folder that is a subfolder of the main Locus structure on internal SD private folder? Solid Explorer, x-plore or adb/PC needed for populating that extra folder with maps, that is understood.

When I click "Set backup directory" to "App default" a message box with frightening terminology appears: "Reset preferences to default values". This sounds like the whole preferences are reset. Better use terminology already in place. "Set backup directory to App Default?".

Will you add other folders to the int/ext system? My Maps folder is pretty big (3gb because mbtiles, Geonames 1+ Gb).

@tapio
I agree re. the wodring with unclear semantics.
When it comes to backup folder: on my test device I have the Locus main folder on internal SD, so I put the backup folder on external SD. Migration worked like a charm.

I fully agree that the maps folder needs to have the same flexibility as the mapsVector one.
And same applies to the export folder!

@tapio: I just put my W1-11 MBtiles world map into the EXTERNAL SD private mapsVector folder.
Locus did recognize it :-)) May be not academic approach, but I do not care as long as it works.

@Menion: two things:
1) although my Tab is fully migrated, it stays at "Initializing" for minutes. For nothing.
You mentioned that the full storage capacity overview is extremely time consuming.
But once an installation is migrated, there should be no need for such exercise, right?
2) re. above: as you have the migration code at hand anyway, it would be easy to offer an INTprivate <-> EXTprivate copy function. That would not turn Locus into a file manager, but rather help the poor users to manage their capacity more easily. Fully compliant with crazy Google :-)

New Beta MapGooglePlay_4.5.0.1_1046_beta

Changes
- support for maps & mapsOnline directories movable between internal/external private directories
- alternative version of the turn off method, more in news, needs to enable in bottom of expert settings & field tests

@michaelbechtold
1) hard to say, there should not be check you describe, but seems it will need a special version with some special logs ....
2) for anything other then selected directories? (now backup, all kind of maps, srtm)

Cool - really quick progress, Menion!

Happy to run a special test version for the slow start issue. Here some more food upfront:
- status "Initializing" is associated with 11% progress. There it rests for minutes. Also after new Locus starts
- this happened with very few maps only in the whole system
- and also happens with some douzen maps (OAM all of Europe), for which you see nice progress in % after the 11% stop point is overcome.

PS: the external SD location for the export directory for the GPX would be important, too.
In particular for silver and free.

Why is the "export" directory important? Does it make difference if exported data are in the internal or external private directory? I'll look at it later. I believe that "export" should be improved in a similar way like "backup" works > so directly into the root of int/ext storage. It will just need a little more work ...
Title: Re: [APP] - version 4.5.+ ( 1. 12. 2021+ )
Post by: michaelbechtold on December 03, 2021, 16:07:43
export is the poor men's backup of tracks. Hence the database and the export folder have to be on different storage, I think.

One other funny finding: before you put the maps on ext. SD in place, I had downloaded some vectore maps, without thinking about proper structure.
Now I tried x-plore to move the things - and it worked.
Next I tried to copy some other unrelated file from ext. SD into the Locus structure - it WORKED!
Next I tried to copy any file from int. SD to the Locus ext. SD place - bummer!
Also creating and moving folders on ext. SD works with x-plore.
Title: Re: [APP] - version 4.5.+ ( 1. 12. 2021+ )
Post by: michaelbechtold on December 03, 2021, 16:11:24
PS: copying FOLDERS to ext. SD even works when they come from int. SD.
Once they have files inside, those fail, but the folder hierarchy is copied.

Another screw up on Google's part. Michal (from x-plore) should give them the whips.

Understand, but instead of poor backup over exported files, there exist two a lot better options!
1) sync system we offer under Gold subs
2) or good old automatic backup to SD card or any cloud service. "backup" is the only directory that may be placed anywhere, so use it!

Hi, first, thanks a lot for hard work and nice App Locus!
I have installed the Beta-Version 4.5.0.1 yesterday to test something. The data move works and i think the normal usage espacally with Geocaching seems good. But what i miss is the button within a Geocache for the Solver Dev App. I have installed both, the normal Solver App and also the Solver Dev App. The normal Solver App is linked within a Geocache "Calculate / Berechnen", but i miss the link to the parallel installed Solver DEV App. The Dev App hav some more small improvements, therefore i use it.
Can i do something or is this depend from the developer of the Solver App?
Kind regards, Jens!

@Menion: after rereading carefully I understood that the backup folder can be outside of the private Android/data realms.
I tried and it worked.
From your earlier explanations I do not understand why such would work. And why not for all the other needs.
Can you pls enlighten me?

I think with this function only writing is allowed but not reading.
So it is only usable for backup.

Menion, on start, Locus creates empty MapsVector etc. in the internal storage even though those are configured to external storage.
It shouldn't do that, just to avoid confusion.

Then exports can go there easily, too :-))) If Menion allows (would be an easy switch: option to combine exports with backup folder - done).
Imagine: you have a new track of 500K and back up 1 GB - instantly  to be safe. Cloud (Locus Gold or other) in the forests ?

I may even read from the picked directory. That's why the app may simply remove old backups and keep only last X files. I even discovered quite slow, but working, random access to files so quite test allowed to use SRTM data directly from any directory, but approx. 4x slower ...

So export is for sure doable - app export data locally and then copy result in the defined directory. It just needs a time, because it is not a task on one evening.

@tapio
empty directories ... hmm, this is probable. Not sure if it is wrong behavior. In case, the custom directory is not available (for example ejected SD card), app needs to have access to valid default directory.

Re. mapsVector on INT:
on my Tab device I first migrated to internal, with a number of subfolders in mapsVector.
Then I moved the mapsVector from INT to EXT private folder. And downloaded some stuff. But there is still stuff left on INT. No harm to me, though.

Re. 4min initializing time: I still believe that Locus needlessly analyzes all storage, even after migration.
Simplest way to check: just put a message into the start of this analysis that displays in that progress window.

Hello Menion,

Feedback about the "alternative version of the turn off method": In first (couch) test, this works on my phone (Android 7). Wow, really well done!
Two small issues:

1.
– Normally I have Android screen off time set to 60 seconds.
– In locus, I have set a screen off time of 15s for navigation.
– After using Locus to navigate anywhere, the Android screen off time stays at 15s – I have to change it back to 60s manually in the android settings.

I guess this behaviour can't be changed, because it's not possible for locus to read the actual android screen off time before navigation and set it back after navigation, am I right?

2.
– I have set "screen activation by gesture" in Locus.
– With the alternative method set, the screen can still be switched on by gesture but not switched off.
With alternative method *not* set, both is possible, switching on and off.

Best, Lucas

It is not for the first time I discuss with someone (not just you  :)) a slower starting time. I'll try to prepare some better logging mechanisms and let you know once it will be done.

@luce
it works! Perfect!
1. App should know system settings value so it should correctly restore this value after the screen is turned off. I'll look at it closely, thanks!

2. Hmm I tried it only by gesture and I had a feeling it does not work correctly at all. Thanks for info, so it seems I should spend on this a little more time, good to know. Thanks for the test!

The tested smartphone is a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra with Android 11 (loaded from the Locus folder in the external memory)

For reference, there was no problem with the same updated Android 9 smartphone.

Android 9 - good subject.
Now, with the latest Locus updates (both, LM4 and LMP) the startup takes minutes, too. Not only in the screwed-by-Google Android 11.
What devastating change has happened inside Locus for the older Android versions, too?

We will have to find out...

The latest version has a problem with the memory consumption of points & tracks, so I'm working on it now. The new version will be necessary ...

Once all will be correctly set, we may start some performance tests, like maps or app startup times. Thanks for understanding.

Locus exports totally broken gpx files here. Example track has two waypoints and more than 100 trackpoints. This is the result:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes"?>
<gpx version="1.0" creator="Locus Map, Android"
xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xmlns:locus="http://www.locusmap.eu"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0/gpx.xsd">
<wpt lat="51.1234567" lon="7.8901234">
<ele>66.25</ele>
<time>2021-12-09T10:59:01.048Z</time>
<name>Pause: 5 minutes</name>
</gpx>

First occurence of such 400 byte files is Dec. 3rd here. It does not always to this. Not seeing a pattern yet.

Fixed some start performance issues, import/export of GPX, connection to Galaxy Watches, and many more. Sorry for quite a lot of versions, I just prefer a quick fix instead of keeping bugged version public. Like old days :).

I downloaded and installed version 4.5.4 on my Samsung A52 (Android 11).  Installed was 4.5. Then I moved various folders via the settings to the privatesection on the sd card, including the folder mapsVector (with 20Gb maps).  Since then, turning on or off overlays in themes appears to be very slow.  Can this be solved by reinstalling themes?  I have already restarted the smartphone and also cleared cache.

And the start time of Locus 4, even with this very latest version still takes minutes. (And no, it's not 208 vector maps ...)

Hi,
I found in the locus/data/sensors folder more than 100 small files that contain a single line of text like this:
"SENSORS, VERSION 1.0, 2021-12-08T18: 06: 57.508Z, Central European Standard Time (2.0h)"
they take up little space and are not a big deal, but it seems strange to me.

@Menion: a recent report from another user shows that he also got stuck with "no enough space" when trying to migrate.
And this is only the tips of the iceberg. Michal reports that you are losing users by the 100s, ratings plummeting etc. Enough reason to improve the migration process further. Here a simple suggestion:

In the migration, you keep the storage device as it was before. Then you never run into space limitations (as discuissed many weeks ago, you are MOVING the files now rather than COPY).
That means: if someone has 20 GB in extSD/MyFavoriteLocusMaps, they will end up in extSD/Android/data/menion.android.locus/MyFavoriteLocusMaps. For the other mass data (SRTM, maps) same approach. You should also offer check boxes for each of the three, so user has control. SRTM data e.g. is another typical example for multi app usage.
Problems solved. No loss, no angry users.

I just started trying it out on my tab (not ready to dare it on my outdoor phone). It works well, within the constraints, of course. I only now realized that I can't sync Locus data via SyncThing - for example, I synced my Locus/data/media folder like that, but SyncThing doesn't accept Android/data/xxx as source. Thank you Google!  >:(

Anyway, one more question about the storage space change:
You offer to switch between internal and external SD for specific directories. However, would it be possible to use both, at least for maps? Or is that prohibited by Google, too? I do have a lot of maps, currently the most used on intSd, the others on extSd. Of course it would all fit on extSd, but especially the OruxMaps format (database) are faster from intSd. So it would be great if there's a way to use both at the same time. You don't even have to provide an organizing tool, at least not urgently - I can move the data without problems by attaching the MicroSD to my Windows machine. So no changes in the UI, there's still the "main" directory for maps and mapsVector, just also use the data from the not-selected directory if there is any. Possible?

I have the main folder on intSD, maps and mapsVector on extSD.
But I also have a few maps on the resp. intSD as well. And Locus finds them all. This gives enough flexibility.

That's interesting - I couldn't try that, because when updating, I chose the intSd as main directory. After that, changing the folder for maps or mapsVector makes Locus move the data unconditionally. How did you do it?
I guess I could first move away the maps from the intSd folder, than change the directory in Locus, then move the maps back on the intSd - is that what you did?

In fact I hit the wrong button in x-plore and deleted most vector maps, which were old anyway. But which made the migration easier for Locus.
If you have large volume of maps on ext SD and chose int SD as standard, most probably you will be blocked by "not enough space". I had that in beta  ...
When you want to have both, int and ext SD employed, then your approach will work, because x-plore, TC and Solid Explorer and USB PC connect will work for int SD on most devices

That is happening when selecting which way to go.

I tried so many things on 3 devices throughout the day, but I did not take systemtic notes. My recollection is:
- if there is a map that is bigger than the free space, then you cannot go there. Even if you move between places on the same storage. Seems you do  copy/delete pairs, not a linux style mv. The documentation should warn about that scenario, or Locus should even tell which file that is (because I think Locus knows the details, because the grand total cannot trigger a no-go).
- if you have maps or mapsVectoron on extSD and chose have the main folder on intSD, then there is a good chance that the combined size will not fit into intSD (there is a reason people use extSDs :-)
Here I propose that you leave any file on the storage where it is before, only move to private space.
A user can easily comprehend that, because they moved maps (raster and/or vector) to different places in the firts place.

My bottom line from hours of testing today ...

Cheers
Michael

@Menion, @Petr: on S10 I downloaded the same OAM file (again) to my S10 (OAM-World-1-11-J60.mbtiles) with the n-1 versions (LMP and LM4), not migrated. Just works.

Go to A52, latest version (LMP): error message now " unknown problem", initially "Cannot obtain zoom levels ". Both with the file on int or ext SD.

PS: after that Locus will download all maps LoMaps and OAM (vector and raster for world) to the ext SD, While you control ont SD manually
Tried that now, works well. :)

@Menion: Perhaps you could mention that in the "Change directory" dialog, along the lines of "Even when choosing external SD as directory, data in the equivalent internal directory will still be used". No need to change functionality, just as a reassurance to "power users"...

Beta version: MapGooglePlay_4.5.4.1_1053_beta
- app now automatically create & scan "X/Android/media/menion.android.locus/maps(Vector)" directories for a maps. Give it a try and let me know ...
- you may try to simply import a map by the "Import" function over the app or click on any map file in the file browser and choose a Locus Map. The app should copy the selected file into maps or mapsVector directory and use it. No exact selection for now.

@michaelbechtold
- this is correct, in most cases is done copy & delete, not a direct move. Technical limitation ...
- current there is a small push to move also custom directories at once. Now, with the option to move maps separately to SD card, it brings some new options. Thanks, I'll think about it.
"Cannot obtain zoom levels" - Petr already wrote that he discuss this with you ...

@Andrew Heard
you were probably looking into the directory with Beta versions. It is correct, there was no Beta version younger the public version.

EDIT: ah @michaelbechtold, I've forget on one important update!!
Start app, long click on the main menu > "Log to file" and enable "Log to file" + choose both "initialize" options. Then stop the app, wait 5+ seconds and start again. In "Locus/logs" will be a log, so send me it please (latest). Thanks

Locus doesn't create its directories in Android/Media. Not in both, int/ext. Also, I didn't manage to make it parse it. Paths as you wrote. Maps, MapsVector. Tried restart LM, used the refresh function in the map manager...

Why is the "export" directory important? Does it make difference if exported data are in the internal or external private directory? I'll look at it later. I believe that "export" should be improved in a similar way like "backup" works > so directly into the root of int/ext storage. It will just need a little more work ...
During a trip, I always export tracks directly to the folder that also contains the trips photos. This folder is then synced to my server. Not being able to pick an arbitrary folder on my file system as export directory in Locus is a bit of a nuisance... but I guess Android 11 restrictions just happen :/

Change in the A11+ file-system > check app settings > Misc > File manager and enjoy it ;). And please, do not forget to keep in mind (we will be writing it everywhere) > we have a temporary exception!! from the Google team. Temporary for how long? No one knows. Locus Map Pro is currently in the verification process ... we'll see how things go ...

no, all my vector maps are stored a long time on extSD inside this path
I also kept these directory when I moved LM4 to Android/data/...
for test i´ve deleted Lomap world and downloaded it again, it was stored correctly in this folder  and it is again visble twice.
One thing i noticed while testing:
i moved this map to internal SD, after that it was not possible to delete the "world" label with the 3.dot button

Damn, I was worried this may happen. Locus Map Pro update was rejected. Now LM4 is published with new "All files access" options and LM Pro waits on the result of my appeal with a high risk that it won't be successful. One guy thinks the app is ok, second doesn't...

@balloni55
hmm, one more try ... top toolbar in the map manage > offline tab > Refresh list. Does it help? If not, you may try to remove Locus/cache/map/init2 directory that contains all initialization files and restart the app.

Hi Menion,
first try on my Tab:
- migration of mapsVector to old root level folder where the backup had stayed has worked
- theme function are fast again
- after restart I also tried to move maps folder - this function is missing
- then I tried mapsVector again, to move to /Android/media
- initializing for "Set custom sub-durectories" takes forever
- after maybe 10 minutes I get the options
- touching custom selection does not do anything, so I cannot move to /Android/media
- tried to activate logging - fail as before
Here is the sequence of events with resp. photos:
1) long tab to menu opens the tools selection - looks same as logging-3.jpg
2) switching on the interesting options - logging-1.jpg - so far so good
3) now the essential step: switch on logging to file - but the Locus reaction smells like the opposite - logging-2.jps
4) going back we are where we started - logging-3.jpg - bummer ...
Cheers
Michael

@menion:
after renaming srtm, locus opens, but then no offline maps are displayed next to the srtm information!
does this mean that the maps, srtm etc. files can/must only be stored in the internal memory?!

(that would be the end of the locus app - so much memory can only be stored externally).

Do you have the latest version from TODAY?
That opens free storage selection, at least for mapsVector (which I tried successfully), SRTM (mayne, did not try), not maps (for me).
But even in the older versions since Nov. you can select int or ext SD private storage.
That is very flexible and helps balancing the capacities.
(It has other limitations, hence the very latest approach.)

@menion: testing 4.5.5 on Android 11 tablet...

All files are on internal storage; there is no external storage. Previously I had custom backup & export directories (as displayed by Solid Explorer):
  internal memory > download > to-save > Locus > backup
  internal memory > download > to-save > Locus > export

So now... settings > Misc > default directories > Set custom sub-directories > backup directory is highlighted in red (see attached) > tap Custom selection > tap Custom selection > tap is ignored; appears not possible to select any other directory?

Is this correct behavior? At least there should be some explanatory message rather than just ignoring the tap?

the oam maps cannot be saved externally in LocusPro and then displayed !
neither themes stored in external nor external storage locations are displayed or offered for selection!!!

so aswell serious problems with LocusPro!

may we hope that this will also be fixed in LocusPro in the foreseeable future?

@michaelbechtold
the problem with locuspro and android 11 is really a disaster for me right now, as i wanted to travel in a few days and am "dependent" on locus.

- device: outdoor smartphone UNIHERTZ ATOM L
- latest Android 11 version
- latest Locusmap Pro version (updated yesterday): 3.56.3

- the app is in the internal memory
- try as usual with all OAM maps, themes, srtm's etc stored externally on the sd card

Access to OAM maps is only possible if I save them internally;
accessing the themes, whether internal or external under ...mapsVector/_themes, no longer works. Selection of themes is not possible.

I really do not know how to solve the problem... Sorry.

Quickest way is a downgrade to 3.5.5 (2021-09)
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1U8U1D-NGQ9CAnqXAkleEXi46wH2T7tMR

As you have no time debug.

The 3.5.5 can access all the folders on ext SD.
If the migration has moved some things in the wrong place, use x-plore or Solid Explorer or Total Commander to put them in the right location carefully - or a PC/USB connect.

Good luck. And nice travels.

Menion, I was wondering:
You're not the first to suffer under Google restrictions. I know quite some apps that offer a "Google-impaired" version on Google Play, and another without those restriction on their website.
I mean, I'm not an expert on Android development, but if I remember correctly, you can request any Android right from the user if the app is sideloaded. So you could tell the user: "Play version only allows to store map and other extra data in internal app dir. If you need to access data stored anywhere on your system, please install the version from the website (sideload): <link here>".
Wouldn't that be a compromise to appease Google and the power users at the same time?

Major update on how map handles vector map themes. Sorry, most probably themes setup will reset to you! The app now handles all themes with relative paths. Also it now fully supports themes in the ZIP archive. So if possible, test it, please! If there won't be any problem, it will be preferred method how to distribute themes

@balloni55
weird your double-maps. I've added a small update in the function "get all maps", which should also here eliminate any duplicities, so you will see in the next version.

what you propose is what I wrote about a few months ago > it is the alternative worst case. Themes (in zip files) - RELATIVE TO WHERE? A zip file in the old mapsVector/_themes/ is unnoticed by Locus.

Also, now you seem to use the folder name. I use different xmls in the same theme folder, now they are shown with the same name in Locus UI. OS map ships with 2 different xmls eg. Ah elevate/elements as well.

Now as you change themes, can you free them from the terrible "_themes" folder, a level higher to /mapsVectorThemes/?

Themes into zip: good move

I'm not successful: didn't manage to make LM parse themes in zip. I don't know what Locus expects and where. In the zip, the xmls are on root level. Path: ///_Ext/Android/data/menion.android.locus/files/Locus/MapsVector/_themes/test.zip
Zip has been created by TotalCommander.

1) Confirmed fix for selection of custom Backup directory. When I selected the same directory (screen cap attached) I got 2 somewhat confusing messages (not attached), but I wasn't quick enough to capture screen or details. And after completion there are now two files in that Backup directory - ...sync.temp (92MB) & ...sync.zip (132MB) (screen cap attached). Can they be deleted/ why are they even there?

2) Regards new ZIP themes - I copied 4 theme ZIP files to default Locus/mapsVector/_themes folder. I selected latest OAM map. When I tap themes button I get green warning msg that "No map with themes is active" (screen cap attached). In a prior experiment I had 2 theme ZIP files but only 1 theme was displayed when tapping "Map themes". Maybe there is some issue with my ZIP filename not matching the first directory within the ZIP file?

@tapio, @luce - maybe I experience the same issue as you - you thought theme ZIP was in wrong folder as not working, but my experience is similar.

I agree. It's more complicated to set up automatic backups (e.g. with FolderSync) if data like this (that I want to backup) is in different base directories, together with other data like maps (that are too big for regular backups). Same applies for mapsOnline/custom directory. Why not put all this under "data", and only the actual maps under "maps*" ?

Issue with the screen off time not yet solved in the latest beta 4.5.5.1. Stays at 15s after navigation instead of changing back to the 60s set before in the android settings.

@menion testing: 4.5.5.1

@tapio, @luce - maybe I experience the same issue as you - you thought theme ZIP was in wrong folder as not working, but my experience is similar.
some themes doesn't work anymore with the new v5 OAM maps

I see a problem with zipped themes, thanks. Should be fixed now so I'm going to prepare the version.

@luce, @bezel
sorry, this is quite a useless report. Which existing themes do not work? How should I simulate this problem?

@balloni55
really interesting because in the code, it is ok. It happen to you as well?

Change of "_themes" is not so easy guys. More than 1 mil. of users already use this system, 3rd party web pages that allows downloading map & themes directly relly on this. There will be also a problem with these zipped themes => how to correctly update non-zipped. We may discuss this later, but I do not think it is important to change it, sorry.

I do agree that a disruptive change of the themes approach can create problems for the installed base.
But there is more than one way to introduce change without damage:
1) let the old and new system co-exist, i.e.
- all new installs shall use the new system
- at start, Locus looks for the new location first
- and searches the traditional location(s) if above fails
- telling the user (s)he has an old setup that should be "renovated" by their theme provider
This way the old system will die out silently, without harm to anybody.
The real harm around themes happend if current mapsVector is on private ext SD. And if that setup can be avoided, the pressure is gone.
I have not tried the ZIP way on private ext SD, though.

Anyone has measured the behaviour?

2) a more aggressive is enforced normalizing:
- whenever Locus finds traditional setups, it converts them to the new approach at startup
- telling the user what needed to be done /and has been done) and asking the user to inform the source of the theme to adapt to the new scheme
This would root out the old setups pretty quickly.

Anyway, I agree this is not the most burning topic ... :-)
Cheers
Michael

@Menion: your latest beta also fixed the logging enabling; now I'm able to deliver: a jpg showing the sub-folder setu, with /Locus on int SD as base folder
And you'll find two log files that document the 4 minute startup time.
I found some file paths that do not exist on that device. No idea where they comes from and persist ...

How is the zipped theme meant to be organised? Is it just the same as the zipped folder that I used to supply for download which would unzip to a folder to sit in _themes?
So would the appropriate Locus action on the *same* zip file now upload it as _themes/voluntary.zip but not unzip it to _themes/Voluntary/etc ?
And more than one theme can be zipped in a folder in the file?

Beta version: MapGooglePlay_4.5.4.1_1053_beta
- app now automatically create & scan "X/Android/media/menion.android.locus/maps(Vector)" directories for a maps. Give it a try and let me know ...
I moved my LoMaps I had on the extSd to that folder (on extSd). Maps are found fine, but they were old, and when I went to the store and did "Check for Updates", Locus didn't offer to update those maps. When I look for them manually in the store, they're not shown as installed, and downloading them - expectedly - saves them on the intSd.
I think if LoMaps are stored in any of those default directories, Locus should find them and update them in place.

What I kind of sensed from Menion remarks is that Locus READS those media folders (I will try myself near term with more maps).
However, the storing - and I suppose also the updating and the check for updates - only runs against the official mapsVector setting.
Have you moved that to media as well? I mean the mapsVector sub-folder?
I'd call above an educated guess - we'll learn from your trying :-)))

Beta version 4.5.5.2

@balloni55
text problems are really interesting, can't simulate it :). Hmm, ...

@michaelbechtold
your steps may of course works, partially. There are many variables that are not perfectly under my control, like the "locus-actions" system used for downloading many maps & themes from the internet directly to the Locus Map app. To be true, I just still do not understand why to change it ... I'm sure that ordinary users don't care where are themes and that's all that matters I believe.

Thanks for the logs ... 90s just to detect existing maps. Uff. We will need to do a few more versions to find out the real reason, sorry. So next new Beta adds a few more logs on places where the app directly work with detected files and check the type of maps. Try it and give me a log again please, thanks.

@john_percy
Currently, I test themes packed directly into ZIP without a top-level directory. But both approaches should work in the end. More XML files in the zip, together with the icon & legend files should be supported now as well.

@luce
thanks, this helped a lot!

@slarti76
only the default "mapsVector" directory is used for such checks. All other places work the same as "external maps" > so only a source of maps side-loaded during init, nothing more.

Just saw you note and the new beta - already downloaded and being started.
What is disturbing is that an "OAM" folder on ext SD is being searched. But such folder is nowhere configured in LM4 nor in LMP - and it does not exist on the system at all. (Maybe it did in the past, before the migration, I do not recall.)
But Locus must have some config file or DB where such invalid data survives ...

Even if so, an empty/invalid directory should be skipped within a millisecond, nothing like this should cause such a massive slow-down. And the only place where are defined any alternative paths to maps are "External maps".

Weird indeed.
Here's the big one ...
23:23:47 - 23:24:52 is the first burning of time.
The many SRTMs are the only files that stayed in place on this device. Before the Android 11 changes scanning them did not burn so much time.
And then there are those "cannot draw map" errrors. They occur when the UI is functional (incl. map selection), but the screen stays empty. Trying online maps or a vector map goes nowhere.
Only after anothe rlong wait time the maps come up.

Why do you have a directory with 19050!!!! HGT files added into "maps"???  :D

What "External maps" do you have defined? May you post a screenshot of this config dialog please? ("+" button in the offline tab > external maps).

Well, those same 19k files were scanned fast as lightning before the API changes ... They did not move a bit on ext SD.

Is there a reason why /Andoid/media cannot be selected in the maps folder definitions? For SRTM, maps, mapsVector.

I'm trying to get from you info about what you have defined directly in the "External maps" dialog: https://docs.locusmap.app/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_external !

And if this was fast before then the only chance is that these files were not scanned at all.

And Beta: no idea, sorry. But hopefully not a big problem, in the worst case on Thursday, a new public version needs to be published.

@menion regards 4.5.5.2_1054: my previous experience with ZIP themes is still the same. The only change in release notes is "loading of... themes with space in the name". None of my 4 ZIP theme files have a space in the name. Using an OAM5 map, none of those 4 ZIP files are listed when tapping "Map Themes", and as shown last time I just get the green message "No map with themes is active".

When I tap the theme icon, a lag of 0.5s is introduced...but not sure here if it was this way before. Edit: nah, it's new I'm pretty sure, because it's mildly annoying, and I noticed annoyance never before there. 😁

Would it be very complicated to also check at least the default locations on extSd? The problem is, obviously, if you have a phone with not much intSd space, and you're trying to download LoMaps from the store, this might fail, even if you have enough space on an extSd. For example, on my Outdoor Phone I have enough space for the LoMaps of my home country - and I want to keep it there for speed -, but if I need additional maps for a holiday, I first have to delete that map, then download holiday map, move that to extSd, then download home country again.
Even worse, I might have to delete previous map also when just updating, if both download ZIP and map don't fit on phone together.

@tapio
lag, hmm. Should be visible loading, I'll look at it. Zipped themes need a little more time compared to directories so there may be a little slowdown when checking available themes. Not during usage, there will be no performance difference!

@slarti76
sorry, any alternative to "default maps dir" is not possible. Technically it is really forced to core defined directory. And why not simply setup "mapsVector" to the private directory on the SD card?

And yes, Android/media directory should be deleted as well once app is un-installed.

Yeah, I'll do that now. Still unsure about the performance impact, especially on that slower phone. Perhaps I'll do some tests.

That's a inconvenient, but at least we get full access with all file managers, so can just move the folder before uninstall (if it's really unavoidable).

So anyone has any troubles with existing themes in this latest Beta version or generally any other problem, please let me know. I'll publish tomorrow hopefully the latest bug-fix version to Google Play.

Also for Locus Map Pro, unfortunately without "All files access" > Google declined our request already twice in row ::). So I'll try to find a method to generate a custom "Pro" version with this access just for Google Drive download. But this later.

Thanks for the help and these of you, who enjoy some free time and relax over Christmas time, enjoy it ;)

Hello Menion,
a well deserved break is nearing ...
But I could  not resist some testing and looking into the logs
One observation is that the SRTM folder (as separate sub-folder on ext SD) is traversed multiple times in the startup process.
I'll have a deeper and more systematic look into the logs later.
Your hint re. external map folder was spot on: there were the pointers to the no longer existing folders. Maybe you can remove them from the internal "memory" once Locus knows they do not exist?

@Menion: different (Geo) apps CAN access /Android/media as reported by different people, also sub-folders of this upper level, without app specific path.
I would hope that a de-install of an app would not remove files and folders on upper /Android/media level, because such folders would not be part of the installation manifest, right?
Like /Android/media/maps and /Andoid/media/mapsVector or /Android/maps/SRTM. I.e. the usual suspects of multi-app usage.

Oki fine. There is not everything in the logs, so if there still be unexpected slowdown even after removing the link to this SRTM dir, let me know, we may investigate it deeper ...

"media" dir ... I was thinking also like you, but I've answered based on my common sense. So I expect that when google prohibited access of apps to the root and even file managers to private dirs, why there will be such a hole like the "Android/media" directory. This does not make sense to me to be true  ::). Anyway, because I create app directories manually, there is a change, this dir won't be deleted ... what a stupid Google decision, omg.

Well, maybe Google is not as obstructive as we feared  ;-)

So, private folder on int SD plus mass data folders on ext and/or int SD /Android/media/maps etc. could be a long term stable solution that survives uninstalls plus gives interoperability  with other geo apps without multiplying storage needs.

And your data saving feature for the base folder, which would not have massdata at all, except a potentially large database would secure the rest of uninstall plus new install needs without copying or moving GBs of data and running into capacity issues.

But maybe not in 2021 :-))

PS: re. Google's security argument: when it comes to media (images, videos, ...) such can be loaded with sequences that carry zero day exploits. To be safe, Google would have to remove all galleries, messengers and alike from the phones. Secure, but a bit boring maybe :-)

@tapio - thanks for asking - no, the XML file was "down" 1 extra level for each of those theme ZIP files (same format as original theme author); the top level inside each ZIP was just the _theme or <theme name> directory (there has been no detail from @menion on exactly what structure is required here)

So I extracted the files from 1 theme ZIP, removed the top level directory, so XML is @ top level, created a new ZIP, moved to LM4 _theme directory; but with 4.5.5.2_1054 still this green error message "No map with themes is active". I'm totally confused now.

As an aside:
I do understand and kinda support that Google doesn't allow everyone to write directly to the root folder of intSd or extSd (incl. not creating directories) - that only led to chaos with tons of folders like "backup", "Backup", "backups", "bak", "tmp", "temp", "tempAppName", etc. Their "solution" approach, however, goes much too far, obviously, and is too restrictive.

Maybe Menion can try to CREATE a folder /Android/media/maps by Locus, then uninstall Locus and tell the result.

Then we're back to the question whether generic folders like Android/media/maps would work, i.e. Locus can access them the way it needs, and they're not removed by any deinstallation (which I'm pretty optimistic about, there's no way for Android, at least on ExFAT, to be sure which app created a folder, if it doesn't conform to a specific naming scheme).

Version 4.5.6 was just published on Google Play.

@Andrew Heard
I was checking the code and it really does not make sense to me. Update to the new version once it will be available, re-select any vector map, and give it a try again, thanks. Michael wrote about an improved logging system > this is correct, but ... I'll explain it later :). But it does not help too much here ...

@slarti76
sorry for the confusion with the "media" directory. I was not yet trying it, so it was only my guess.

@michaelbechtold
give a try to this new version. What about start performance, better? Should be.

Android is really weird since A11.
"Android/media"

App create directory with the package name, so /Android/media/menion.android/locus/x
- app may read and write here without limits
- directory is deleted together with the app!!

App may also create any! directory here, so for example /Android/media/maps
- app can not read any content from this directory. Simply request "get files" return "nothing" even I've just put few maps there.
- directory is not deleted together with the app

Interesting.

A map download in Cruiser is by the browser. (Into downloads).
The map selection is by the (a) file explorer. (Un)install Cruiser app so should not touch nor delete the downloaded mapvector files ? Right ? To test by A11owners.

@Menion: start speed is fast as lightning - WOWWWW! And a big TXs.

Willi did test with Cruiser, and I tested with c:geo (see also my direct mail to you). Download of maps to this place do work. Even using below as a base folder does work.
A de-install did NOT delete /Android/media/cgeo (which is NOT the official app naming path!).

Not sure which access method they are using.

So the main difference to the folder in data is that at least file manager apps have full access here, whereas in data they only have on the intSd (which may or may not actually be a bug that Google decided not to fix in A11 in order not to break something).

QuoteApp may also create any! directory here, so for example /Android/media/maps

Well, that really makes no sense, granted. Being able to create directories you can't read from - oo-whee!

@slarti76: I have been testing with c:geo with even its base folder on ext SD /Android/media/cgeo, with a lot of reads and writes.

I agree with your assessment that Google screwed up and did not repair for proper access to the private folders for file managers with the full privilege.

E.g. x-plore can create folders anywhere in any private structure. But cannot read or write a single file into the folders it created itself.

Hmm, I'm testing it a little more, and seems that access may be done only over the new ScopedStorage system (usable only for MapsForge V4 maps), but not over the common "File" access that Locus Map currently needs for all maps!

So sorry, guys, only app-specific directories seem to be usable. I see a big advantage: directories are accessible for system file browsers (for now).

@slarti76
well, the current version just fix the issue when the user moved the whole app to SD card private directory and then wanted to attach a new photo to the point. The camera app was able to create a new file but was not able to write any data inside. I had to create a hack that a photo is created in internal memory and then moved to an SD card. So current problem > not a big surprise.

To sum it
- for now, of course, the best solution is to enable "All files access" and use Locus Map as before
- once we lost this permission, a) I'll already create some manager for maps built into app, or Android/media/menion.android.locus is the way

With Locus Map Pro it is a little more complicated as the app was twice declined and I'm unable to the public the official version with the "All files access" system. As mentioned before, will have to prepare it just as APK for direct install.

V4 maps could be handled differently from V3 maps, like both differ from raster maps ...
And V3 is a zombie anyway - I suppose this is the next big thing for Locus to get sorted in 2022.

And once you have SAF mechanics in place, you can use /Android/media/maps and alike, which would  not be killed by de-install.
I think this is the mid/long term secure path, as the special permission is only temp ... but VERY useful for the LM4 community for now.

Those changes not in 2021 ...  ;-)))

@tapio - thanks - I now have the OAM v4 & OAM v5 maps for my region, and the results are quite interesting/ useful?

4.5.5.3: I have a single ZIP theme. I select the v4 map. I tap the Map Themes button and the list of themes is correctly displayed - internal General theme + single external theme. I then select the v5 map, tap the Map Themes button. The green message is not displayed, instead a blank side panel appears (note I am testing with a tablet in landscape mode).

@menion - useful info? Shall I create a log file?

4.5.6: tap Map Manager > select the v5 map > return to main screen. But I *think* the v5 map isn't selected/ tap has been silently ignored, because when I next tap Map Manager: v4 map is still selected.

All my testing is on an Android v11 tablet, but on the Android v8 phone the v5 map is working fine. I copied v5 .db & .map files to tablet 2nd time in case slightly corrupt, but same behavior as already described.

My lnk files are working relative the Locus directory that contains the mapsVector directory. For my OS theme:

mapsVector/_themes/OS Map/OS Map Day Legend.pdf

Note I have the lnk files located in the same directory as the theme xml files.

That is a good question. Tried numerous paths... I wasn't able to create a lnk file which allows Locus to access a pdf file inside the zip.

If a pdf is in the zip files root the content of the lnk should simply be relative to zip root:
blah.pdf
and/or
/blah.pdf

Because I can't reproduce the issue now ;-( One thing I do still see, which may be related, is with Map Manager > select map > Map Manager > previous map details are still displayed instead of the selected map.

to reproduce: lets say I have 3 vector maps for same region: Locus, OAM4, OAM5, with OAM4 currently selected.
When opening Map Manager, shouldn't the details for the currently selected map be displayed? Is it possible I previously experienced situation where Locus tries to use theme of non-existent map - green message "No map with theme is active"?

A first "solution" I found was to save the themes internally, but leave the maps externally, but subdirectory for 'mapsVector' have to be set to App default setting/ internal directory (see link above).

your zip file contains some non-UTF8 characters and because of this, the app is unable to extract it (and crash). I've fixed it so the next version only notifies about the incorrect theme. Check the modified version from Willy, it works correctly.

To my experience, in Locus 3.56.5 the file OutdoorV4 2021-12-08.zip\Outdoor\Outdoor.lnk needs to contain Outdoor/Legende_Outdoor-Desert.pdf despite being a sibling of OutdoorV4 2021-12-08.zip\Outdoor\Outdoor.xml – so .xml and .lnk and .pdf are on same hierarchy level but directory within ZIP must be provided in .lnk file.

I downloaded Tiramisu_3_0_2.zip from https://tartamillo.wordpress.com/tiramisu/ (https://tartamillo.wordpress.com/tiramisu/) and it crashed Locus as expected. After renaming files containing Tiramisù to Tiramisu,  the theme worked and looked correct. So the crash seems not to be [only?] caused by files containing non-UTF8 characters, but already much simpler by filenamens containing UTF8-characters with certain (higher?) codepoints (here hex 00F9 or decimal 249). For an international application developed by a Czech team where accents are common, this is unexpected.

Would be great if that information was added in https://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:advanced:map_tools:theming (https://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:advanced:map_tools:theming) or https://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_locusmaps#map_themes (https://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_locusmaps#map_themes)
alongside information about ZIP support as posted in https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/shortcuts-to-legends#comment-84305 (https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/shortcuts-to-legends#comment-84305) and https://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=7632.msg66444#msg66444 (https://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=7632.msg66444#msg66444). nono, there aren't any reasons. If I ever knew, these paths will be visible and used, I should of course remove "Locus" from the path and most probably also "menion" from the app name  :D

@Georg D
hmm, this is most probably a good point. I'll try to fix the relative path in the zip to keep it compatible with the un-zipped version.

About support for utf-8: which app was used to pack this zip? I've found one info on dev forum:

The problem arises because by default 7-Zip encodes the names of the files within the zip file using Cp437, as noted in this comment from 7-Zip:

Default encoding is OEM (DOS) encoding. It's for compatibility with old zip software.

That's why the unzip works when using Charset.forName("Cp437") instead of Charset.forName("UTF-8").

Anyway, I've tried to pack them as UTF-8, and no difference, hmm.

I'll post your info about the manual to Michal, he look at it. There is a lot of manual pages to change and it takes some time ...

Hello Menion,
when traversing /Android/media, Locus includes the private sub-folders of other apps - like Whatsapp. Then all hell brakes lose - 1000s of files are tried - which are not maps in any shape or form :-) The expanded themes horror, but on steroids.
I'd advise to exclude all sub-folders like com.* Apps like c:geo or Cruiser can use sensible names for sub-folders, not the technical names. So Locus catches the useful stuff, not the useless.
Alternatively you could create a config file that initially includes Locus sub-folders of /Android/media. Users who use more than one app should also be able to edit and add some lines with file paths without wheeping ...
Cheers
Michael

Are you sure? App should only iterate over own data, so only over "x/Android/media/menion.android.locus/maps" and "x/Android/media/menion.android.locus/mapsVector". Nothing more! Do you see in the log that the app test all files from other directories?

The log file is impressive, nearly 1 MB, just for the start ... I'll send it via classical e-Mail.
Besides 1000s of lines for Whatsapp you'll find a number of other java errors I cannot understand.
TXs and cheers

Sorry Michael, but this can't be an app problem. Please check a) your custom setup for "mapsVector" and "maps" directory and most probably setup for "External maps (https://docs.locusmap.app/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_external)" defined in the offline tab of the map manager.

I will check that later, when I have more time. LM4 start takes ages, and often even crashes with my current setup. Your suspicion sounds very logical ...

I also assume I have put /Android/media path into the external map section some days ago (I do not restart Locus frequently). Why? Because of interoperability testing. Because interoperability must not be dependent on app specific sub-folders of /Android/media.

And I think it should check Android/media/menion... already on Android <=10, for less complexity and unification.

UI is confusing here. I moved Srtm, Maps, MapsVector, MapsOnline to Android/media.
I set them as custom directories for srtm (otherwise srtm didn't work) and for MapsVector.MapsOnline and Maps work, but UI doesn't show.

I'll look at it, thanks.

Unfortunately, for more than a year I was not updating necessary build tools like Android Studio and many libraries around. But now it is necessary and I'm already more than a week stuck on it. Seems to be some technical problems in a few core-libs I use, so I communicate with other devs and try to solve it. Waste of time and no interesting updates = sorry. I'll publish and inform you about the new Beta as soon as possible.

New beta, and a nice improvement which I think is useful when you are displaying many tracks and want to highlight one.

You tap a track, it inverts as normal and the lower pane appears. Now you can tap the title of the lower pane and it minimizes to a very small size - so now you have a better view with still having the inverted track. You can move map and zoom.

And I like this pane minimize, too!

Beta version 4.5.7.4 was just uploaded to Google Drive.

Finally, everything seems to be working as expected + a bunch of smaller fixes as usual. Please be aware, there may be unexpected malfunctions, that I should be able to immediately fix if known. Thanks.

Well, I took the AFA version.

Yes, but it is very complicated and you have to know how to proceed and where to save what. Otherwise the vectorthemes are not accessible.
Not everyone spends days on it or is a software expert - so it is extremely complicated (see also oam-forum...).
The normal user does not get along with the current LM Pro version (in case oam maps and themes should be saved externally

There was a time of contention in Dec. 2021.
We discussed the ZIP theme thing and since both, Locus and OAM themes work with ZIP, things are pretry straightforward. Even if you chose EXT SD in non-AFA Version.

Tap track: "Info" button in the bottom left of track screen, toggles to point screen (good), then going back to track screen we see the navigation button to the bottom left (bad).
I'm wondering what "improved peek toggle behaviour" is about.

thanks for the info about the problem when switching between track & trackpoints. There really was an old problem so fixed now and even an improved time required to display a trackpoint, perfect!

@Pcmann
write to me a little more about your "It can be turned off in the "ZoomLevel" notification settings...". I do not perfectly understand, thanks.

@baegas
sorry, I've forget to test it. Seems to work fine for me.
What happens on your device? Click on the "select" button opens a system file browser. Here you choose a file from the DCIM directory? And then?

@luce
ah thanks. Another interesting issue that should be in the app for very long and I never noticed it. Interesting. Fixed.

I notice in the latest beta a change in bottom menu when a track recording is stopped. Now the 4-button bottom menu no longer contains the dot-dot-dot menu on the right hand side - 1st screen capture. So after stopping it is no longer possible to directly export or hide the track. Now instead after stopping, the visible track must be tapped, and a slightly different 5-button bottom menu is displayed (the original bottom menu?) - 2nd screen capture, which does still have the dot-dot-dot menu on the right hand side.

Also note other inconsistencies - only the 2nd menu has the "i" button.

Please add back the dot-dot-dot menu.
