Is there a way to change the appearance of map items? In my case it's railways which are relatively small on the elevate or elements theme and I'd like to highlight/enlarge them to find them easier.

On seeing the title, I was going to suggest themed vector maps. But on seeing your mention of Elevate / Elements, it appears you're already doing that, using OpenAndroMaps (https://www.openandromaps.org/en).
Are you willing to do a little tinkering with the theme files? They're plaintext XML files, so they're theoretically easy to edit, if (granted) somewhat hard to understand.
I've done this in the past, modifying a theme to suit my own sense of aesthetics. Eventually gave it up, because the theme authors kept improving their work, while my fork stood still.
