Dear Locus map creators and users!
I want to tell you, that I've created several Digital Terrain Models (DTMs), which are based on precise Opendata LiDAR-elevation data of the country's Geographical Institutes.
You can find all infos and download links on the following Website:
https://sonny.4lima.de
The improvements in accuracy, quality and fine details of my model's elevations compared to those of the popular SRTM-datasets are enormous. Especially in mountainous terrain.
You can use these new DTMs to create improved, more accurate contour lines in maps. Or you can copy the files for the area of your interest into the correct folder of Locus to improve dynamic elavation values and the shading of the maps in these areas.
Yours, Sonny
Top effort @Sonny. I checked some routes I planned in Slovenia a few months ago, and the visual improvement in calculated gradient is amazing. Much less noise too. Are there plans for other countries, for example France, Switzerland, and the remainder of Italy?
Maybe a question for @Arndt, I presume for BRouter to make better routing decisions involving elevation the RD5 files would need to incorporate the new HGT/ GeoTIFF data?
If the country's Lidar-elevation data is Opendata, then maybe. But those of Switzerland, France are not available free. And for Italy (exempt South Tyrol) I'm unsure about the situation. And if Opendata - where to find LiDAR sources of the whole country.
Hi sonny
screenshots looks very good 8) thanks
before i start testing a few small questions
QuoteOr you can copy the files for the area of your interest into the correct folder of Locus
- data/strm ??
- if so, should be the availabe hgt files of this area deleted?
- all files of unpacked zip, or only tif file?
First of all:
- Just download the 1"-sec versions of the DTMs (or if you have little available memory on your phone: 3"-sec).
Not the 20m and 50m-versions, Locus can not use them.
- Yes, copy the .hgt-files into data/srtm folder of Locus.
- If there are already equal named files in this directory, just overwrite them (they have been automatically downloaded by Locus before and are based on less accurate SRTM-data)
You don't have to copy each .hgt-file of a country, just for the areas you are interested in.
Each elevation file (.hgt) represends exactly 1° x 1°, which could automatically derived from the filename. The filename specifies the southwest corner, e.g. "N47E014.hgt" represends an area from N47° to N48° latitude and E14° to E15° longitude.
- If you copied them I recommend to start Locus and once execute
Menu > Settings > Miscellaneous > Clear temporary data > (check all points)
to make sure, no old cached elevation or shading remain.
Can you please make 1"-sec versions of those for Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Macedonia and Croatia :)
The first step is a site to download the LIDAR raw data free of charge.
Do you have links to those data sets ??

OK thanks for reply. One day...
Thanks ... works great.
One of the best improvements for Locus since i use it,
all my tracks (the elevation data) are much more realistic than before, tipi-topi!!
THANKS A LOT !!
Thanks from me also.
The elevation gain of my alpine tracks got.... lower ;)
I added terrain models of Luxembourg and some German provinces:
http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-germany (http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-germany)
http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-luxembourg (http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-luxembourg)
Is there an all-in-one package? It's not too much data (in terms of megabytes) AFAICS...
But first and foremost I have to thank you!
Sorry, no.
Hallo sonny, the LiDAR Terrain Models are wonderful. Many thanks!
Is it planned to create a LiDAR 1" Terrain Model of "Sächsische Schweiz" (N50E014.hgt)?
I'll probably do if there are once Opendata Lidar sources of this German province (Sachsen). Right now I'm afraid there's no such data available for free use.
No free data for Sachsen, that's sad, I'm sometimes @ Erzgebirge.
Oh what a difference, I reset the height levels in Locus pro for some tracks and the Höhenmeter up/down (elevation gain ?) values went down e.g. from 9xx to 500 something... :o But I cannot say for sure if I really used the old SRTM data or GPS data pulled by my phone. However, what a big difference. It's overall like 30-40% difference.
Is it possible to use the 20/50m models with Locus?
i'm afraid not. But the 1" models (.hgt files) are about as precise as the 20m models
Ah ok, the hgt work well :-)
Thx for that!
Switzerland and France are available now too:
http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-france (http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-france)
http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-switzerland (http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-switzerland)
I spent many hours and weeks to collect and edit the source data for creating a DTM for the whole country of Italy. Most of the Italian regions provide more or less high quality data. For those who don't, I used 1" SRTM data.
Now the project is finished and available here:
http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-italy (http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-italy)
@sonny ...you're awesome! We'll use it for LoMaps as your previous datasets. Thank you
There's been a problem in the Northwest of the Italian files. Please download the corrected ones here:
http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-italy (http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-italy)
Thank you - updated.
Dear Locus-Friends,
I've spent lots of hours during the last months to collect, check and resample data. Just before Christmas I'm going to give you the result – several new DTMs – as a present:

Enjoy them, Sonny.
As far as I know, I've now completed the list of European countries where Opendata LIDAR source data is available. If you notice that there are new European countries providing high quality Opendata DTMs in the future, feel free to contact me!
Finally something regarding myself: During the last 2.5 years I spent many, many Hundreds of hours during my leisure time to search for new Opendata source files. I've written hundreds of Mails – mostly in foreign languages ;-) – to contact public authority of the individual countries to help me with finding free and often hidden source data of their country. I had to download giant amounts of source data. I had to search for errors, plug holes within the data, compile, resample it and create files in useful formats. To provide them to you, the community for free.
It would make me very happy, if you honor this work by supporting me with a Donation. I've created a DONATIONLINK via PAYPAL:

THANK YOU VERY MUCH, Sonny.
I have created new files of Germany-Saxony, which you can download here:
https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-germany (https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-germany)
After lots of hours of work, finally the latest version of DTMs of Spain are ready for Download:
https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-spain (https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-spain)
I therefor used the latest available source-files of the Spanish survey Institute. Most improvements are in regions which lack of LIDAR source data in the previous DTMs: Andalusia and the Balearic Islands.
Now the whole territory of Spain is covered by high quality LIDAR data.
There's a new DTM, of Northern Ireland which you can download here:
https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-united_kingdom (https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-united_kingdom)
Good news: After lots of hours research, contact with different institutes across the country, quality checks etc. there's for the first time a high-quality DTM of the whole United Kingdom
https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-united_kingdom (https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-united_kingdom)
For about 75% of England, Wales, Northern Ireland fine LIDAR source data available, Scotland
unfortunately (beside river valleys and coasts) is not covered as well. For the areas not covered with fine LIDAR-data I used OS DTM-50m which is wider gridded but also based on LIDAR source data and hence especially in wooden areas more accurate than SRTM data.
Enjoy the new DTMs of the UK!
Since some weeks LiDAR source data of the whole territory of France in its finest resolution is available as OpenData. So during the last weeks I created enhanced DTMs of France:
https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-france
Additionally Wallonia (Souther Belgium) also provides their LiDAR sources in its finest resolution as OpenData. So I created enhanced DTMs for Belgium too, now the whole country is complete in highest resolution:
https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-belgium
Have fun, Sonny.
I created a new DTM of Iceland
https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-iceland
Have fun!
Hello, do you have this data for Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland?
I'm not sure if there are Opendata LiDAR sources avalable for these coutries yet. If you know some, please post the links where to get them.
I created a new Version of Swiss DTMs, with great improvements in large parts of the country:
https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-switzerland
They are based on new high-quality OpenData sources of Swisstopo.
By the way: I created a Twitter account to post news and answer questions. If you want me to follow:
https://twitter.com/SonnyLidarDTMs (https://twitter.com/SonnyLidarDTMs)
I created new DTM of the whole of Germany. Not each federal state is offering OpenData elevation data yet. Please open the image "_Sources.png" in the download package to check the type of Sourcedata for each region.
https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-germany
Furthermore I created a new DTM of Slovakia, please check:
https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-slovakia
By the way: There's one European country left which offers precise 1m-OpenData Lidar source data: Poland.
But it's not possible to download the enourmous data for the whole country due to the limitations in the download methods. I already contacted the Polish office (GUGiK), but they seem not willing to improve their download methods nor offering an alternativem less dense gridded DTM (e.g. 10m) for the whole country which would result in an ideal file size to download.
If somebody of you is interested in a Lidar-DTM of Poland, you could contact them too, to make them understand the request for a countrywide download of their elevtion data.
Info site is:
http://www.gugik.gov.pl/pzgik/zamow-dane/numeryczny-model-terenu
There's a new version (v2) of DTM Austria, my oldest DTM. Therefor I downloaded the latest LiDAR source data of Austria's federal states.
Additionally I created 2 models with finer resolutions (10m and 0.5"). These fine gridded models will kept limited to Austria.
https://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/dtm-austria
Thank you Sonny,
your links to opendataportal.at are broken.
Where can we get your LIDAR-Data?
data.opendataportal.at is going to be transfered to a new operator, run by a governmental department. After necessary adaptions the site is going to be online again.
The downloadlinks itself are still active, but I don't want to post them in public, cause they could be outdated in the future. So neanwhile you can send me a PM with your DTM of interest and I'll send you the download links.
Btw: If there are news, I'll post it on my twitter channel
Hmmm, it takes a long time, this move. Maybe I can help pack the box ... ;)
Can I also save the files as a ZIP ? Or can Locus not read them then. I have saved them internally.
If ZIP goes, must then all ZIP be or does it also go as ZIP and unpacked mixed.
Since then I have each unzipped and then pushed to the phone. But is a lot of work. And it also takes until they are moved via USB. For quick and practical tips I am grateful.
I'm not sure if Locus is able to read or unzip .zip-Files.
But I can tell you a useful tip to bulk unzip files on a PC: I'm using software "WinRAR", mark all files I want to unzip, right mouse click and select "Extract Here" from the menu. Now all files are unzipped into the same directory
I created new DTMs of Germany and Luxembourg
Download: https://sonny.4lima.de
For Germany I used new LiDAR source data of Hessen and Bayern. And the quality of Baden-Württemberg, Saarland, Niedersachsen, Bremen, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern got significantly improved, especially in wooden areas.
For Luxembourg I used finer LiDAR source data.
Have a good time!
Hi Sonny - just curious why most of the republic or Ireland isn't included in the DTM? ref. https://sonny.4lima.de/map.png
You cannot view this attachment.
There hasn't been an OpenData elevation source for it yet. Do you know one?
Btw: The same is true for the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.
Sadly no. Thanks for the info & the great work you share.
Thanks for your dedication. As for bulk unzipping directly on Android, bulk unzipping to same folder worked for me with ZArchiver.
And for bulk downloading with GDrive app one has to go to the real files ("Speicherort anzeigen" - initially there's a list of shortcuts only as for Germany 1").
So, it was a bit tricky.
During the last months I worked a lot to create new DTMs, now they are available:
Norway_Mainland v2, Norway_Svalbard v1, Norway_Jan Mayen v1, Denmark_Faroes v1, United Kingdom v2, Ireland v1, Portugal_Mainland v0, Portugal_Madeira v1, Portugal_Azores v1, EUROPE v18
Have fun!
Ireland V1 - excellent timing for me Sonny - thanks! About to cycle tour over there.
If would be great if Locus Web used these DTMs for the route planner, say for Gold level users - certainly a premium feature.
Fully agree, Andrew.
For the Web Planner, the cost impact is minimal (not so for the 1" downloads, though), so there is no justification to not use it.
"Consistently" (Web Planner versus App) being "wrong" is not a good idea, I think.
Just an update:
Quite a few new DTMs have been released during the last months, especially in Middle- and Eastern Europe.
Have fun with them!
Maybe an interesting improvement for Locus user and developers: "DTM Czechia v2" has been released which is based completely on precise LiDAR data.
