I read the manual and searched the forums a little, but still unclear. Is this what "Points of Interest [BETA]" will do eventually? I do not need all categories visible while in a city - it clutters up my screen and makes things difficult.

Thank you, but that doesn't really address the issue. I still have a ton of unnecessary stuff on my screen - just smaller now. ;)
I'm moving to Locus from Sygic, which has the option to show/hide each POI category. For example, you can choose to show only street lights, churches, and hospitals, while hiding everything else.
Is this being worked on for Locus? I feel like it's the only major missing feature...
Have you tried OpenAndroMaps (free of charge, BTW) with Tobias' themes ?
You can at least switch maybe 20 categories on/off.
