Title: [APP] - version 3.5.X+ (updated 12.12.2014)
Post by: tramp20 on December 12, 2014, 18:20:58
Hi menion,
I cannot use the new v3.5 free and pro.
Vector and raster maps are almost unreadable, pale and without color and contrast.
The v3.4.0.5 was ofc ok.
I cannot attach screenshots because I am not at my PC.

Android 4.4.4 stock rom Z1c

Hello Menion,
with 3.5 PNG Icons of mapsforge themes are scaled, probably according to device dpi. As I use already scaled PNG icons for hdpi, xhdpi and xxhdpi devices in my themes, those are huge and ugly now. Is there any switch to disable scaling?
Best regards,
Tobias

Hi Tobias,

how are you separating, which icons should be used? Or you have more themes and user choose which one to use?

Hi Menion,
The latter - I have three sizes to download here: http://www.openandromaps.org/en/legend/elevate-mountain-hike-theme (http://www.openandromaps.org/en/legend/elevate-mountain-hike-theme).

Not only the symbols are different, but also stroke width/dasharray, font size, dy and circle radius.

A user already asked in the openandromaps forum about the big symbols with the new Locus version.

I use PNGs because of glow effect and transparencies.

Best regards,
Tobias

@Tobias: understand. Quite complicated solution I think, but why not. We did some improvements in efficient handling of points and I tried to move closer to latest mapsForge lib. And there I saw this change - using DPI to rescale icons. But I probably saw incorrectly. Sorry

@balloni55: nice ... I have no idea now, sorry. There should be no change in text sizes, only change happen in size of icons. Hmm ... Peter, did you change size of texts during last changes of Vector themes?

I even have some issues with the map after 3.5 Update. Seems that it has broken the theme. Some of the icons are really big. some areas are missing...

It used to be the only compatible solution for all mapsforge 0.3 apps, and with pearl scripts for xml resize and batch svg converts to png it's pretty quick to maintain.

As with mapsforge scaling - it's different, tile sizes are scaled according to dpi, eg. 512px for xhdpi instead of 256px. And as far as I know, only SVG icons are scaled, not PNG.
OruxMaps has an option for PNG icons to be scaled, so it's up to the user to increase or decrease them, which works better.

Oki,

issue with semi transparent maps and rescaled icons of vector maps should be solved in 3.5.1 version, ok?

@gynta:
- issue with break text - I'll look at it, but I just worry to change with because it should break layout on different screens

- widget - I know about this problem (with 3x1 widget on your tab), but I do not know how to solve it now, later

- "pitch" - https://crowdin.com/translate/menion/3292/en-de#6645898 vs https://crowdin.com/translate/menion/3292/en-de#1375767

- missing translation - I've changed this yesterday, that`s why they aren't on Crowdin

- remove unwanted icons - not possible. For whole time there is a POI db feature (1.5 year), it works in this way.

- texts in details of vector maps - I believe you are clever enough to compare "Version" in store with "Date" in map detail ;).

As far as I can tell, you should only see icons of the sort of POIs that the map theme seeks to display at that zoom. The overlay from the POI database is clickable (which is its advantage) and should appear somewhat later than the main map, so shouldn't hinder scrolling.
But my issue is that the POI database overlay icon does not respect the display magnification of the map, either from "Display map with scaled resolution" in "Map - advanced" settings or "Lock the zoom", then magnify the screen.
You'll need to click on the image below to enlarge it in order to see the double image icon I get with scaled resolution of 400%.

Please add a new word for 'Show labels (Tracks)', for example 'Do not show', instead of using 'No', The Japanese translation here gives strange meaning but can not be changed the translation since 'No' is used somewhere else for proper meaning.

'Hold center method' function is broken. Map is centered immediately without delay time,  'Center cross' and 'Line to GPS' is not shown. It happens only when the map is moved to north-west after map is once centered. Please see attached video.

@ta-ka: I'll improve it. And "hold center" - I know, I noticed this today also during field test. Fix version during next week, thanks

I can't use this specialized Locus themes with other apps.
There are to many special tags for Locus inside the theme up since version 3 of mapsforge.

At least there should be a possibility to test sizes of icons. If this is a problem, I'll do it during monday with Peter.

Because I'm more then sure, that sizing of icons was incorrect in previous versions of Locus. Now Locus correctly rescale all icons (no matter if PNG or SVG) in all cases and I'm sure that in all cases correctly.

Shortly for now: if icon has no size parameter, it is used as is in theme. So png 24x24 px icon will be sizes really 24x24 px (which is on big devices really small)! When you use any symbol-width or symbol-height parameter, icon will be sized by this parameter. You may specify pixels exactly like symbol-width="24" or you may use symbol-width="24dp" which will say Locus to rescale icons based on device DPI parameter.

Previous Locus version used automatically one parameter to scale SVG icons, but it was not correctly implemented and in some cases (mainly for an areas) it causes unexpected behavior. I'm now slowly trying to improve Locus theming to be as close to original MapsForge V5 as possible to save you guys some work with themes that you wants use also for different apps.

Anyway feel free to open discussion on changes that cause you a troubles, I'll gladly answer/help/improve.

I´ve got a question regarding the new POI feature.
I used it ages ago in some old beta version and remember having to download the POI database. I installed the latest version but I can´t download the database anywhere. Or is that information now included in the vector maps? Do I have to download a new map from the locus store?
I usually use the andromaps map and the POI list is empty.

Download a new map from the Locus store. The download now includes the POI database (as a separate file).

So there is no way at the moment to just download the database as a standalone file?
As i mentioned before, i don´t use the locus vector maps, but the freizeitkarte or andromaps maps.
I don´t mind paying for the POI database, but I don´t see why I need to download maps for several countries just to get the POI databases...?

Thank you for new version!
First of all... I have no problems after update and enjoy all the new things:
: widget is great, especially the Locus button
: new themes are nice. Finally the hiking way symbols are readable now. Colours and contrast are fine
: poi.db is a hit and a big step forward.
Good job!

The arrangement of the poi labels can still be improved. ..

Hi, I have just downloaded a new vector map from the locus store to be able to try the POI feature.
I used the Locus free to download the map (I always wait for the first bugfixes before upgrading my Locus Pro). After downloading the map I was asked whether I´d like to download the height information and map shading, but after pressing ok I was told that I needed the Pro version for this and couldn´t download the extra data.
I changed into Pro but wasn´t asked again. Can I somehow get back to that dialog to download the extra data in Locus pro without having to download the 1,5GB Map again?
And a few questions about the POI feature itself:
Can I somehow select POIs from different categories to be shown on the map?
Are the POIs always loaded around the map center? Or can I somehow choose (e.g. map center, GPS location, certain point on map)?
How can I set the amount of POIs I want to have displayed? It seems to autoselect about 100 POIs to be shown.
Can I choose the distance (e.g. show all POIs in a 10km radius)?
It also takes quite a while to load the list of POIs once you open a category, although it seems to be a lot faster than it was when I last tried the feature in some old Beta.

Don´t get me wrong, I love the new feature and am looking forward to trying it in the field :-)

Another thing I would like to mention is that the loading speed of the latest map (Germany complete) from the locus store is extremely slow. Zoom level 8 took almost a minute to load. Also higher zoom levels (9,10,11) took forever to load. I tried 2 other maps (freizeitkarte and Germany map from andromaps, both for the whole of Germany as well) and loading speed is normal. In all three cases I used the locus hiking theme).
If this does not change - can I somehow use the POI database with another map? Maybe by renaming the map file?

No

Poins are dynamically loaded on map for current visible screen, no more. And which points? It's based on your current vector theme.

There is no need to select anything. As my answer above about vector theme. Only in case you use some online/personal map, you have to display points manually, there is no other chance now.

Some requests should be little bit slower, some faster. If you use database for whole Germany, it should be problem as it's biggest database we created and we are still not sure if that was a good idea :).

New map tiles are four times bigger then older map. So you cannot compare one tile with one tile, but try to compare time to draw whole screen with old map and whole screen with new map. New maps should be same, maybe a little bit faster.

So if I download the map again in Locus Pro I can download the additional data after the download has finished, right? The additional data is the height data and mapshade data (isn´t that within the same .hgt file anyway)? If that´s all there is then I wouldn´t need it, as I have already downloaded all .hgt files for Germany a while ago.

Is a feature planned to allow us to select POIs from different categories?

So do i understand this correctly - POIs are loaded for the current screen (around map center)? And it´s always the closest ~ 100 or how does it work? Because I always get 98 - 100 Pois displayed, regardless of which zoom level i use.
And all POIs are being displayed until i "delete" them from within the POI screen....? So I can´t just delete/hide the last POIs? As an example - I choose hotels, then campsites and then toilets. Now I only want to see the toilets - I have to hide all and then select toilets again - or did I misunderstand something here?
Is it possible to somehow see when a POI was added to the database, or when it was last updated? Like that one could spot a possibly outdated entry.
On example: I went to Madrid not long ago and used Google Maps to look for a restaurant, but the first two I went to didn´t exist anymore. In that case it would have been helpful to see that the entry was very old.

About map loading speed - when using the locus store map it took 25 seconds to display the map on screen (whole screen) on zoomlevel 9. Using the Andromap it took 5 seconds to display the whole screen (exactly the same area).

Yes, you download in Locus Pro HGT files, nothing more. They are used for hillshade and all other stuff around altitude. So if you have own HGT files, there is need for this step.

"Is a feature planned to allow us to select POIs from different categories?"
Currently there are no plans on improvements. So all depend on interest of users (suggest votes on help desk)

About loading ... I probably missunderstand previously. There are two options how to load data -

1. automatically - in case you have vector maps with same name as database and you display these maps, points are loaded automatically on a map based on current selected vector theme. If you move with map, new points are loaded once you stop scroll. Automatically without any extra settings.
2. manually - you may display and category of points and thanks to top icons, you may display 100, 200 etc. points on map. There is also no settings, so no ability to hide just part or automatically display just any categories, is possible. Main purpose of this database is addition to vector maps.

Post by: eldron on December 15, 2014, 13:12:26
Now I am a bit confused. When using the new map no POIs are being loaded automatically with the hike theme selected. Can I / do I have to configure somewhere, which POIs I want to have displayed automatically? I am assuming that it should work "out of the box", so without having to rename the map or database? I am,of course, using the map i downloaded from the locus store.
Any idea on the slow map loading speed? Even on zoom level 12 it takes 5-10 seconds to load the map, where my old maps load almost instantly.

EDIT:
Sorry, I was trying the map in low zoom levels, that´s why no POIs where being displayed. The other question remains - can I configure which POIs I want to see or do I have to edit the theme (in an editor)?

POI db:
Locus ignores "Map icon size" in "setting -> Map - objects & style -> style on map" on App start
(Doesn't load POI.db icons at start)
To check: Set icon size to 300% and restart Locus.
After first zoom or map moving, icons are loaded.

Map manager -> Vector -> Delete a map...
-> Deleted map is still in list.
List should be refreshed after del operation.

edit
Right panel
Locus ignores "Always hidden"
in "Settings -> Map control &  panels .> Map screen panels -> Right panel visibility"
at App start.

Thanks Christian, same to You too :)

Maps cause troubles only in zooms 10 - 13 or also other zoom levels as well. And only huge map of Germany or also a smaller maps (parst of Germany)? Because I though it is a problem only of huge Germany map in zooms 10 - 13, isn't?

Locus Store map of England is roughly half the speed to redraw of OpenAndroMaps map of Great Britain at zoom 9 and 10 on my MotoG (roughly 20 seconds compared to 10 seconds).
At zoom 8, I get the world map, and at zoom 11 and greater, the speed of redraw is too great to make sensible comparisons (3 or 4 seconds max).

Using map Bayern.map from Locus store with bayern.poi. Combination of lags in higher zoom levels, poi data, popups ('address not found' and track info) and cold fingers on bike let me rename the poi db to decrease loaded data. But the map is slow.
But... enjoy holidays!

POI database handling

Hello Menion,
I have been testing and trying the early versions in beta since a year maybe. And the mechanics of association by naming convention is still working, which is good. And POI search was only an explicit user function.
Now, in addition, with the feature going into official PRO version, there is an automatic presentation of tons of POIs when you use the Locus-provided maps as a base. I do share the concerns I have seen in other comments, critizinging that there is no control over amount and type of object to be shown.
I fully understand you do not want to invest science to improve here. But a few simple things would help:
1) in the list fo POIs allow to restrict to the perimeter of the map currently shown. Not hard, as you know and show the distances to the map center already. To make things trivial, just take the radius of the enclosing circle around the map shown as the inclusion criteria. Zero confighuration, all on the fly. Currently selecting huts e.g. will fill you a list fo 100 elements, incl huts being 50 or more than 100 kms away. My suggestion will allow to assemble relevant POIs of different kinds without accumulating 100s of them in the selection.
2) Maps like OpenAndroMaps are really great and I typically use them. But POI handling then is totally disconnected - you have a long list of available DBs, that is all. But you already have this "fast map switch" mechanics; just employ it to the POI DBs as well. Currently you show a full list of .DBs you found after startup. Simply offer the 5 or so nearest to the map center. Same way you do for maps themselves.
3) No science, but a great user support would be "profiles", defining a subset of POI types to be shown. That is somewhat more work for sure and may be beyond the limit of your current investment of time.
Besides that I wish you and family a nice Xmas time and all the best for upcoming 2015.
Cheers
Michael

Hello menion,
probably your nightmare is back..... ::)
during last days i recognized that my last autobackup run on 18.12. although it was set each day and worked last half year perfect.
Yesterday i started my device new and set new autobackup of "free" and "pro" at different times during the night.
But no autobackup is stored and no notification is visible, only the date of next autobackup is set to next date!
Creating a manual backup is possible. :)
Two things of my point of view could be the reason,
- modification from a locusupdate on 19.12, if there was one????
- my autobackup time from "free" was on 18:00 and two or three times locus was running and i get the message "backup not possible while locus is running"

Hi,
do you want to read my strange experiences?
I have two smartphones. On the old one with a custom ROM Locus pro and free are running the auto backup always at the correct time :-)
But on my Sony Z1c (stock ROM 4,4,4) the auto backup behaves very strange (phone of course on and Locus not running):
1. either no auto backups at all or
2. at a accidental time both or only one or
3. I have to send the phone to deep sleep for some seconds and after waking up both backups start running at the same second and parallel.

On this phone another app (SMS Backup&Restore) behaves similar but the app MacroDroid (and all timer apps) are working perfekt.

So are there several methods in Android to start/read timer functions because some apps are always ok and other not?

Sorry I cannot help you more. If you tell me what I should record in a catlog then I will do my best.

Menion,
besides my recent post, for which I would appreciate  a consideration, there is one more serious thing that came to my attention when dealing with brouter: SD-Card handling, in particular re. SRTM.
Locus nicely allows full control over the folders where maps of whatever kind reside. So these "valuable" assets are secured from de-installs. Also you provide Backup path definition in the config file - great
But SRTM data are valuable, pot. huge mass data, too, and they reside in the app folder structure. To allow balancing space between internal and external SD Cards, and to secure this data in case of de-install / re-install, pls. put a path to SRTM into your config file, too.
Also, this will allow to use the same SRTM data for Pro and Beta installs on external SD.
TXs and kind regards
Michael

Hello,
recently I observed change of behavior (don't know in which version precisely) when Locus is sent to background and then restored, let me describe:
Open Locus, open a cache via map, switch to Listing tab
Press Home button to send Locus to background
Open Locus again via its icon
Locus is restored but shows the map, not the listing of cache. You have to open the cache again.
This is sometimes a little cumbersome when cache listing contains more complicated formula to calculate and I have to switch to a calculator app and then back to Locus :) Please can this be fixed?
Thanks.

Hi to All,

seems that even here, even on help.locusmap.eu is not too much work. For which I am happy. Thanks to this, I get crazy idea to look at news in Android 5.

Result is new version for test on Google Play. Old version after all these years, was quite a big mess in styles and it was impossible to simply update UI to new Android because of lot of own customizations I did. So I had to rewrite every single screen to match new possibilities.

My priority was to make Locus style as close as possible to current! style I think that last version looks and works fine, but it was on end of possibilities. So goal is update to new style and keep usability and functionality on same level, ok?

Improvements in name of Android L will come later. Thanks for understanding.

The first thing I have noticed is how all the tabs became bigger. In earlier versions, more tabs were visible at the top. I don't know if it can be made smaller. Maybe they have to sell bigger and bigger phones because of wasted screen space like this.
This brighter theme is not too elegant, but I know that this is the trend.
All in all I like the previous look better, but it is only my opinion and it does not seem to affect Locus usage adversely based on a small couch test.

Wider tabs are problem on my side as I had issue with cut words so I rather made them bigger :). I'll try to fix it.

And I also hope, that current design changes won't have any effect on usability. This is what I'm currently trying to do. So thanks for feedback.

And @Guido Farina, almost no one require new design now :), but every app (except some exceptions like Total Commander), require improving in UI to better match current trend ... so this is just an natural progress which should be with as less pain as possible for both sides (me and Users)

@balloni: thanks, I'll check it today

@Christian: sorry, I wrote "have"? ... I meant "hate" ;D

And really do not worry, I'll try to adapt some nice changes in Android L, but I also wants to keep Locus as unique as possible. For example, I was playing for some time with new styles of dialogs - http://www.google.com/design/spec/components/dialogs.html# . I tried to change style of dialogs in Locus to this new style, but after some testing, it was so unfriendly, I was missing top right cross (close button) so much, that I immediately return back to old good style of dialogs and I'm sure it will remain in this way :)

@szebenyib: it was not possible till now. Now it should be easier to do it then before - http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/support_amoled

suggestion #1

have option to shut screen available in navigation/guiding options and when the screen is going to shut off, have a message display for two or three seconds which will allows the user to stop the shut down.

reason.  I hadn't used the free version for a while on my phone and it kept blanking the screen when I would start it.  I thought it was probably the gesture option I had set, but couldn't easily find where to unset it.  I first tried navigation, then guiding, then screen controls.  In the meantime I managed to have the phone shut the screen a few times.

suggestion #2

Have the option to follow roads in the navigation options.  I hadn't created a route for a while and it took some looking around to see that to follow the roads, I had to set the follow roads option when I was about to do a route.  It seems Locus remembers the setting once it is set, but I think having it (also maybe) in the navigation options is a natural location for it.  For me, anytime I am creating a route it should follow the roads (I know others might not want it that way, for hiking, say).

About times:
- "Published" renamed to "Hidden"
- "Updated (Web)" should be time of last update on a web. I found small issue that this time change if you edited notes localy, which may be your case. Otherwise it may be updated thanks to Geocaching4Locus or "lastupdated" tag in GPX file.

Both bottom times "created" and "last updated" are related to local Locus points.

@michaelbechtold: nice ideas. I see in Db POI nice future, so I'm sure during any of upcoming months, I'll focus more on all tasks about this feature.

@aberfoly: idea 1 - is this necessary? There is already so much possibilities around control of screen that I really do not wants to complicate it even more, sorry.

Idea 2 - not sure I fully understand this sentence "had to set the follow roads option" - may you please point me on correct settings, to better understand what you mean? Thanks

I tried the new option to select a folder for srtm on the external sd card in order to move out bulk data from the precious space on the internal sd card. This worked  nicely :).
Later on I tried to download srtm data for an area where I still not have it on my phone. This didn't work due to the phone running A4.4.2 (honestly I expected this problem).
In the case of srtm data this might not be a big issue but maybe a bigger one for backup, online maps, ...

Would it make sense to write new data to the original location on the internal sdcard (at least in the case of non writable external sd card)?

There is more bulk data in the locus folder for which I didn't find the option to select a custom folder: graphHopper.
Is there any further development from Locus side? Is there further development from the graphHopper developer and will this be updated in Locus?

@balloni: is is not fixed? Hmm have to check it once more thanks. Geocaching icons - they are just in higher resolution, so if you used icons at 100% size on middle sized device, you will probably see no big difference :).

And issue with right panel, I'll check it also, thanks - found and fixed

@tommi: I have to write some more deep description for these 4.4 devices. best should be to keep precious data on internal memory and data you do not worry about place on SD card into .../sdcard/Android/data/menion.android.locus(.pro)/files/... , which is writable directory for Locus Map (Free/Pro) application on SD card! Only important is to keep in mind, that this directly will be deleted once you remove Locus from your device. Hope this help.

And sorry, no progress around GraphHopper. It's still actively developed as I noticed, but I had no time to check it and do any progress on my side.

Then the lookup should check both locations, though, in addition ...

ah sorry, you can wants this from me. Primary directory is primary directory and usually exists only one and this directory you may now define in settings (for certain types). So sorry, no checking of original and new directories ...

I'm even thinking about removing all these settings from Locus and placing them only to config.cfg. It's more one-time, quite advanced, settings ...

I believe it is logical. In Locus is now support for logs with special coordinates attached to logs. These data may be also available in PQ files so I've added support for them to GPX parser in Locus. Anyway when you update cache over G4L, which overwrite logs with new once, you logically lost your coordinates because in G4L this feature is not included (yet).

Thanks for problem with tests - thanks to this, I found out three similar issues on different places! All only in English translation where due to some optimizations, translated texts were removed. Fixed.

Anyway I'm unable to simulate your issue with photos. Simply - you have point stored in Locus DB. You open this point and add a new photo to it (by Pick a photo), save a point and return to map. Then you open this point, tap on context menu next to photo, tap delete and confirm (without deleting on disk), you press back and after you return to this point screen for the third time, you still see a photo attached?

- The message 'Automatic restart in 5 sec' is very hard to read because both text color and backgroud color are almost white.
- When the 'calculate' button of the number of tiles to download is tapped, the message 'Creating map ...' is briefly shown at notification area. (It isn't correct because not yet creating map.)

If "Don't ask again" checkbox in Filesystem chooser is unchecked, Locus doesn't remember users choice of Locus directory at next Locus Launch. There are two cases.  Please see videos below.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/smbavv56htq87fv/20150126_locus_directory_1.mp4?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/p7zhppowq933mrk/20150126_locus_directory_2.mp4?dl=0

By the way, while the directory chooser at Locus startup lists only writeable directories, the directory chooser in Locus settings lists a lot of read-only directories, too.  Obviously some of them, like /system, /efs, /cache... are needless to show.

@ta-ka: thanks, but I think, what you describe is not a problem, but it's how it works. Because when Locus finds, during a start, more then one Locus directory, and "Don't ask" wasn't used, it offers list of directories and the biggest one is preselected as a best candidate. List of read-only directories - hmm yes, there should be improvements, agree. But I think that this feature is for really advanced users, so I do not see a big problem here either.

@gynta:
#108: suggest bigger screen ;)

#109: hmm aren't icons at start just a draw on a map and after zoom, they load from offline POI database? It's looks so on first sight, so issue should be more that they do not load also at start

#110: thanks, I probably noticed something similar. Progress bar stopped somewhere in the middle and not continue after screen turned on. It's reproducible and I already had this in TODO list, just not yet fixed.

#111: thanks, fixed

#113: hmm I'm unable to simulate it. May you please create for me a lot right after first attempt? Thanks

#114: hmm, it's how it always worked  ???

Fine ...

about lines - expect quite a lot of inconsistence between various Locus screen in next release. I'm trying to find an united style for a whole app and some screens react on global changes correctly so don't. So result is, that not all screens use same style for same components. But I'll one after another improve it ...

because of many changes, I think best should be wait till next! release version. Now in Friday will be published 3.6.0, which will still contains a lot of know UI problems. Version 3.7.0 should be UI perfect, so wait on official BETA, so something like 3.6.X.X, thanks :).

2. this may be possible only in full screen lists, but to be true, I'm not sure if such extra work worth it. We will see what votes in your topic says about it ...

Think the height of the row is slightly too big.

ah, that is better :). Anyway isn't this standard height better, because you may be sure you tap on correct value?
