I've decided to give this format a small chance, so I examine how small library I use works and started chaging rendering system to allows some modification. So forget for now on texts (they're really bad), and focus on style of map itself. If you use IMG maps and will want improve any style, then I need - map (img file) with specific item on map, place where should I see it, and screenshot how it should looklike (for example on garmin device)

Also little sorry for a long time without updates. I'm currently mainly working on new screen for Points (merged small dialog on map together with geoaching screen etc.). I expected to make it fully working after few days, but unfortunately it already took me almost 50 hours and it's still not done (what's funny is, that it looks almost same as current screen). Anyway, in testing and also in new market version, will be still old good dialog. I'll publish new testing version with this dialog after new 2.19.0 version ...

i just played with the new version and found two bugs:
In a list of tracks the 4 buttons at the bottom (selection, sorting, filter and tools) are greyed out and can´t be clicked as soon as i select or deselect any of the tracks.
I have to leave the screen and go back to it to be able to use the buttons again. I am not sure if this bug is new to this version or has been there before.
The second bug concerns the new groups - the delete button is not displayed, i can only see "rename", but when i click below the rename buton i can delete the group. So it looks like the button is just not being displayed properly.
Phone Info: Android 2.3.6, Galaxy Ace 2
I can confirm both of the reported bugs.

damn, problem with inactive buttons in track list is really bad and I don't understand, that no one from our team during half day testing do not found it. Both problems are fixed. I'll probably release one more version during sunday/monday after more problems appear ...

thanks for the quick fix, this is one of the reasons why i love your app so much.
Just thought it would be handy to have the changes listed in the thread, as we are here to discuss these changes and comment on them. I also find it handy to read the changelog before installing an update to decide whether there are changes in it that are interesting to me.
I agree with szebenyib, a long click on the group to change the name or delete is would be more intuitive than using the menu button. Found myself long-pressing the group a few times before looking for a different way to edit / delete it.

I have found another bug which i think has been present for a while but i forgot to report it last time i stumbled upon it.
It concerns the height profile diagram of a calculated track (calculated by Locus this is).
It´s a display error as seen on the first attached screenshot. In the second screenshot i zoomed in and you can see what is causing the problem - for some reason the streetnames and instructions for the track are being shown at the bottom of the diagram.

- long-click on group name -> I personally almost hate long clicks (mainly because you do not know that something like long click exists). I agree that handling with groups is currently little complicated and will think about better way. On second side, how often you work with them? From my point of view, main problem here is "discover" for new users, how to work with them.
- point names on tracks > this is not a bug, but intent. Unfortnately displaying points on chart is currently, as you may see, weird. I of course plan to improve this, it just matter of time

I also like it. Best on it is, that it's perfectly precise, so Locus really download only! tiles that has at least pixel in defined area

About information in groups - I was also thinking about it. I also miss some difference between close/open group. I'll do something with it to next version.
Maybe a long press is not the best way, but a solution like the points: on the right part there are three dots that open a menu intuitively. ? :-) (only as an addition to the existing possibility to the top right menu
The icon of the group could be used to signal: 1-empty group, 2-group with items none active, 3-group with some items active, 4-group with all items active ? :-)
I've got it, don't worry. I'm just not 100% sure how to do it to keep is simple but useful :). Btw. small testing version if anyone had any troubles and need to check if they are already fixed ...

Tested track selection - ok.
Groups - number of groups is visible and delete button is present in groups pop up.
Basic start screen was present but I didn't change anything there. Qr code generator seems to work fine :-) created one then took a photo of it, recognized successfully.

QR Code generator seems to be funny toy, on second side, I did this on request of one guy (for precise geolocation photos taken by external camera) and I hope, I'll get from him some good how-to on this topic ;)

OpenSledMap doesn't show map tiles properly. Empty tiles(Not exists) and Gray tiles(without roads and borders) appears almost all zoom level. In fact, I found the issue when OpenSledMap was added to Locus. At that time I thought it was network problem. But it seems not because the issue is still there.

Could you please add a new word for audio_recording to assign better translation?
- For playing recorded audio, 'eye icon' and 'View' in the pop-up menu seems strange.
- The Question dialogue to 'Remove', bottom right button should be 'Remove' as well in stead of 'Delete'.
- The text 'Delete also files (photos) in memory' should be updated to 'Delete also attached files in memory' or something.
- In future, I hope voice icon and video thumbnail will be shown in the point's info window as well as photos.
List of mp3 and avi file name there is not very nice and file name is too long, I think.

- POI alert > Text-to-speech Play : It seems test voice is not properly assigned.

I plan to completely rewrite base screen for points and for tracks, so I don't want to waste to much time on this now. Anyway I absolutely agree, that it looks bad :)

in new Testversion the photos are stored with all other "taken" audio/video in locus/data/media
In my opinion will be better, photos furthermore stored in "photo_poi" folder

Attaching audio, video and other files:
- As soon as ATTACHMENT tab is selected, Locus always opens software keyboard but there is no field for texts.
- When points are exported as gpx or kml, not only photo file but also audio/video/other files are copied into '*-photo' folder. Folder name may be updated to '*-media' or '*-attachment'.

- distance:1 and bearing:2 works fine but ETA:3 and elevation:4 shows nothing. (I've srtm files installed in Locus/data/srtm folder.) Btw, What is ETA? Estimate Time of Arrival?

You're correct with ETA and elevation. ETA is what you wrote - estimated time computed from current speed and "elevation" is little bit CPU consuming in cases you move with points fast, so I'll rather remove both these possibilities from config file description

This QR-code function isn't related to coordinates. Maybe it could be an additional feature in an separated app? Otherwise Locus becomes bigger and bigger.

I found that on HTC J (Japanese version of HTC One S, android 4.0.4), just after opening GPS screen, Locus(Test 2.18.0.5) is forcibly closed with the message "Unfortunately, Locus Free has stopped.". It doesn't happen on Locus Pro(2.18.0). May I ask to fix this?

Anyway there is probably nothing too interesting for you I think. perfect. There was "unknown" problem in compass screen. Probably caused by new ability to calibrate small pitch/roll views. Mystery for me is why there were problem, but a small change fixed it, so hope it will work :)

I think that's right. Let's wait until the QR code generator is included in the next official release. Then we'll see if some people want like to use this feature.
Hello. I'm playing with 2.18.0.7 for a while and I'm noticing not preserved selection of mapItems between app restarts, sometimes. I remember that on older versions this was preserved always. Also under some circumstances POIs for newly selected mapitem category are not shown immediately but after app restart (when selection is preserved). There might be something odd in mapItems handlling. I'll try to reproduce this.

ah sorry, I just published for some specific testing tasks version .8 and .9 and by accident deleted this .7 version. I'll try to publish new testing version during this week. And about type - these test versions are always installing as Locus Free app, but works for some time as a Locus Pro, so it may be used to test all new features or just for test how Pro version works ...

I have noticed a small typo in the download map window, see the screenshot attached: instead of 'then' it should be 'than'.
There is a minor bug with the compass screen, (screenshots). I have chosen navigate to, and then opened the compass. As the distance decreased it changes over to the next point (distance is big again, then starts to decrease), however the name of the point is not updated to the current one.
Example:
>>Point 47 [290m - 129m] **change should occur here somewhere, since distance has increased** Point 48 [669m]
I have not tested it with navigate along track or guiding.

Interesting. I will have a look at Gaia, but I can say now that it is not interesting at all if vector masks aren't supported.
Beside, I have never needed US maps (CalTopo) since yet.

I cannot estimate how many developers you need for an app, could be four, why not?
There are also doing version for iOS so they have more work. And also it's quite different if you work on your own project 10 hours every day or as en employe 8 hours five days a week. Anyway Locus itself yes, alone. We are anyway two on developing. Peter is currently doing on new server solution and improve a vector maps we provide over Locus.
And advertising - why not :). I'm big fan of free choice, so let users decide what they want to use ...

I tested a bit this Gaia app and beside a much too expensive (15 eu!!!) all average GPS app I found the IGN map for France included!
This is the only really interesting thing!
I remember when hiking in "mercantour", south France, 1.5 years ago, I needed these maps but couldn't get the download url so I copied all the jpg out from the website to use the map as pictures and this was important for our hike, the GR52A is marked on it. Other maps are more or less useless in this region.
How do they get it? Is that the reason their app so expensive, because they pay for maps like this one?
You can even download the IGN map for offline use in the app, I don't know up to which size, but there seems to be no restriction. I should scrutinize the requests with Wireshark :)
By the way, I didn't bought the app, I refunded in between 15 minutes...

@franc: yes I also think, that a higher price is tax for paid map content. Anyway do not worry, IGN maps will be in Locus probably soon (within few months). Paid, but we hope not too expensive. Ah and also, price 10€ is quite cheap, their iOS versions costs double, 20€ ;) . On second side, all these prices for Locus, Gaia etc. are still very cheap (generally all software on Android platform). I think compare to other product you, as a people commonly buy in stone shop ... but this is another story :)

Thanks for the new update, and I definitely like the waypoint dialog extensions. This made me to add some ideas I already had earlier about extending the waypoin's properties, maybe some come worth implementing:
- ability to assign to all types of waypoints a POI type (like parking, castle, shop, person etc.) along with related icon
- ability to enable full edit dialog for individual waypoints within track, in the same range as standalone waypoint (ie. name it, assign own icon etc.), this could give waypoints on route further usability as I describe in following point
- named waypoints or waypoints with set POI type (either inside a track or standalone) could be in guiding mode announced differently from generic waypoints (either they could have own notification sound or named points could be announced by TTS)
- finally (but I'm afraid it's not planned in near future) add ability to edit waypoint's (inside track) navigation command (or add/remove it), so that user can adjust navigation commands by human logic instead of machine logic which isnot always perfect, especially with guide on all tracks feature

That is true. Locus was the second app I bought on play. I was really thinking about it, because I am still a student, but buying a printed map costs a lot compared to it! With turistautak.hu (and now open maps) it is really cool to use in Hungary. Having an incorporated geocaching.com was another selling point. I couldn't imagine that all my needs would be incorporated in one application. Another killer feature of Locus is the support of menion (and yours guys :-)) . I have not seen anything that would come close to it. (Offering options for the users, improving software but never forcing the users to certain behaviour (eg. Microsoft removing start menu)
Recently I do not use geocaching.com anymore as it tends to be a 'cache in every bush game'. Instead of that I use geocaching.hu. The concept is similar, however you have to grab a password from the cache to prove that you have been there, better cache description, more attention to detail. And I can do that with Locus and a cell phone instead of a GPS! (I know in professional use it cannot replace an outdoor device, but hey there is a garmin monterra in the shops if someone needs it :-))

All in all: Locus is definitely reasonably priced in my opinion. Keeping maps separately available for pay is good for me as I won't really go to the US for example very often.

This is very right if you compare it with desktop computer software but it is not comparable.
Apps are mostly for playing (often not for productive work) on the phones and only few user would easily buy many apps if they would cost 20-50 dollar each.
The mass is the counting and only a few really successful apps (Tasker, Titanium, Locus etc.) are making good money ;)
I wouldn't pay 50$ for locus even that I know exactly that it is worth it, because I managed several hiking holidays with it :)

also for @franc: no matter what maps we add (as a paid content), I do not want to charge anyone for some extra money, when he will not want. So everything what we add will be optional. Increase price for app and insert some paid maps "for free" is not a way I want to go.
@0709: the text used for this is "Track lies %D on %N1 o'clock" - so what you hear is probably "Track lies ...". Do you really think it's not needed? I imagine you should have enabled not just navigation, but also some POI alert etc. so better notification that also say "on what it notify", should be useful, right?

@balloni: hmm minimise button was also in previous versions, but only if you had any service running, like track record. Try it now with track record ;). I moved "cancel" to top panel as a small cross. You may also use "back" button on your device to close this dialog ...
also main reason: if you enable for example track record, then in this dialog will be "STOP & EXIT", not just "EXIT". And when also "Cancel" button was at bottom, it really do not look nice .. too much buttons and too much texts. So I decided for this step ...

And how are stored - currently I use very simple system - every point on track you record and store to database, may also contain all possible information from sensors. @gynta: two previous problems solved. I'm anyway unable to reproduce problem with incorrectly loaded map tiles. I'll try it more deeply, because it should be really serious problem. And coordinates - I've changed this. Believe you agree. Previously there were only text "Coordinates" which do not make much sense. But I test it still just on Nexus 7, so thanks for notification on problem on smaller devices.

on 3 different devices [S2 (os 4.0.4, root), S2 (os 4.1.2,stock), Tab (os 4.0.4)]
and

with different maps.

I can confirm this map loading issue with the Note 2. It is only in the test version with new, not already stored "online" tiles. The actual pro version does not have this problem.

@franc: test version install as Locus Free. So if you have Locus Pro on your device, you will have two locuses at once, but it is no problem. This test version will share most settings, maps, datas with Pro version and when you remove it (test version), you won't lost any data, so do not worry. In rare cases, Test version do some incompatible modifications to locus data, but in these cases I warn in news

dont know what means "camcorder". I use no 3rd party apps - only standard android camera tool with standard settings on an unrooted device with stock mode.
there have to be some confirmation button, using back won't work. For example on my SGS2 with default apps, it looks like ... ah (a minute later) :), I wanted to post two screenshots with "confirm" buttons for took photo and recorded video, but on SGS2 confirm button on video is also missing :). On nexus 7 it works as expected ... damn

hmm I'm anyway sure that what I did is correct. In this case, it's a problem of video recorders.
For example that one on my SGS2 record video to file, but when I stop record, there is no confirm button. So I press back and it return to Locus information - "failed" even that video was correctly recorded. Nevermind - when this "failed" response come back, I firstly check if requested file is recorded and if so, I just add it to the list. You may always delete it within Locus directly.

First of all thanks for taking another look at the Garmin (IMG) maps! Here are some of my thoughts/requests.
1. Ability to hide or resize lables - too large now and very distracting from the objects on the map. Of if they would disappear at higher levels that would also be helpful.
2. Ability to overlay and have complete transparency where the background is. This would allow to overlay on a terrain, sat map, or even a vector map. Basically providing the trails from the img overlaid on a standard vector or more detailed sat/terrain map.
3. Some way to emphasize/enlarge/set color of objects on the img map. Basically just need to be able to make the trails and objects larger/thicker to see better when overlaid on another map.

maybe there is a problem with loading maps downloaded with Oruxmaps with new test version 2.18.0.10. You can't see this maps, only text 'loading...'.
Last weeks I downloaded a lot of maps from IGM (Italian 'Istituto Geografico Militaire') to get ready for my next hike. With Locus Pro 2.18.0 it's all OK. Same with previous Pro and Free versions.

None of my personal sqllitedb maps load with the Feb 5 update. They just say loading.
I even removed them, cleared all caches and re-added them.
Previous test from Jan 31 worked (as does pro).

I can confirm this. Personal map loads only on startup, after first hcange to other raster map stucks a loading tiles.Vector maps load fine, and online not tried.

Without some type of control of labels it's kind of useless for me. OruxMaps has a couple dozen switches for Garmin maps.

uff I'm dead .. sorry for no response. I finally make map loading work as needed. Anyway I'll do some precise testing tomorrow, because I don't want to make from you testing rabits in this case. There was just a few minor problems with loading of map tiles, but after some small changes in code, I was unable to make it work as before :). So result seems to be finally loading map without any issue and as a bonus, it looks it's a little bit faster and less CPU intensive now.
So working version tomorrow. Good night

Dont locus will be killed by the OS when there no icon?
Anyway without icon user could forget to Switch off and loose battery.

I'm still not sure, if do something more with closing dialog or not. Weird ... I usually have precise opinion, but in this case, I see no importance in this, so I do not know what to do ;D. Probably nothing for now ... time will show as usually ...

I also spend more then a day on Garmin maps. Don't ask me why - I don't know (also). I found a few programs that are for PC, paid and even support these maps. Many web sites that offer various kinds of IMG maps. Seems that no-one except me worry about some "terms of use" and copyright. Funny ...
Anyway I found that one of maps I use for testing is not able to load. After a long testing, I also found, that modified library that Jose (developer of Orux) provide, is very old and that in his app is much more modified version, where problem with this map is probably fixed (it works for him). And for my surprise, most of changes is done by him personally, so if he reads this by any accident, I take my hat off, because he had to invest very very very lot of time into this.

in screencast you see first a vectormap, zoom in in should stop at 7,6m, but i can zoom in to 0m till the +button is greyed.
The rmap.sqlite is very slow and the switch between div. zoomlevels works only if i move the map. Zoom in in should stop at 100m, but i can zoom in to 1m till the +button is greyed.

i test both maps parallel with the official locus pro, the same setting and "no locked zoom", see screencast the padlock is not blue highlighted and there zoom stop at 7,6m.
In Testversion it doesn´t matter zoom is locked or not
wait a while guys with some theories. I probably already found a problem, why all these issues (same problem) happen ...
fine, now it should be perfect. I tested it quite a lot on SGS2 and I think (personal opinion based on switching between testing and official 2.18.0), that speed improvemence in map moving/zooming is very good. Nice work :)

@balloni: sorry, also do not understand. When you enable zoom lock, Locus "lock" on currently selected map layer and do not allow to change it, just rescale (change percents of zoom). As I'm checking it, seems to work in same way as previoud versions ...

After playing a little bit, i recognice that the function

is not the same as button right down "Lock the zoom"
With "Automatic zoom lock enabled" you are able to zoom
over all available zoomlevels and if you reach the hightest you can scale up .
With "Lock the zoom" you are prisoned in actuell zoomlevel and you can scale up.
I don´t see the necessity of both posibilities
Perhaps you can simplify this to one option served by the padlock button?
I tried this auto-lock option and found possible bug: if auto-lock is OFF in conjunction with personal map, the manual Lock zoom button jumps to extreme zoom level (6400%) instead of 200% as in other cases. Not so if auto-lock is ON or with vector map.
Edit: but later the zoom lock button switches to 200% in all modes so maybe it's not bug.

I don't think so, there were situations when I found manual zoom-lock button necessary even when auto zoom-lock is used. It gives better control of desired layer and magnification.
I don't understand why new look of geocache screen? Old was great, all informations are in one window (no necessary basic info or attachments), and on bottom bar. I don't want to tap on small button on top bar. Why you change good thinks to new? Users want this? In my opinion better was old geocache screen, no need to any changes.
Locus is great app. But too many improvements changing interface or other things make similarly to ex. Skype. In past - very good app, today - too many functions, too many "improvements".
is the "Heart rate monitor BT 4.0" support supposed to work with low energy (BLE/Bluetooth smart) devices or just the regular ones? I've tested with Polar H6 sensor and it's not recognized - Locus Bluetooth manager shows just paired devices - and there is, AFAIK, no pairing for BLE ones.

But balloni has a good point. Question is, if there is any serious usage for Settings > Map - control & panels > Automatic zoom lock - set to off. Probably no. This settings happen a long time ago, when overzooming was really slow and some people don't like it. I know there may exists people, who wants to force Locus stop on last zoom level, but how much of them exists? I should move this settings to config.cfg file for them ...
@layio:everything is changing, mainly in Locus. It's a side effect of fact, that I do not have precise plan on few years to future.
Current situation is that you have to press on point on map and then with bottom button you get to geocaching screen. On both screens are very similar possibilities. Both screens aren't well optimized and mainly on tablets is looks bad. I also want to improve usability and maybe add some new features.
And same future is planned for track screen. Just warning.
Anyway I'm sure you will like it. It won't be so dramatical change, on second side, I hope it will speed up work with points and later also unite design for more screens in Locus
@head: hmm sad to see this. You are testing it with latest Locus version? And did you used "Heart rate monitor (BT 4.0)" panel for connection? Hmm I purchased PanoBike TopPeak HRM for testing and with it, it works correctly. From documentation, it looks like all devices should now use same system for communication (not like before with BT 2.0/3.0). But if it won't work, it will be again a problem ...

- In locus by adding attachment. This should call your prefered camera app and took photo should be stored into Locus directory (in new Locus version to Locus/data/media/photo)
- You use camera apploication directly and later attach photo in Locus. In this case, I cannot control where this app store it's photo

When I go to search/Localized photo, the second option is "camera directory" and currently Locus (last published pro) shows that this directory is "/storage/sdcard0/DCIM"
I would like to have the configuration possibility to change this directory's address to "/storage/ExtSdCard/DCIM".
Better yet, if you could check the camera application's settings and see where it stores the photos, but it's not necessary, since this place is (normally) set only once.
I'm checking in code, how I find correct place of took photos and seems I do not use best possible method.
Currently I used method for receiving external storage and added "DCIM". But there exists one more method, that should return directly preferred directory. Question is, if it will return directory set in camera app or just directly, Android this it's best. We'll see ;)

Found a small bug: Using a pdf as attachment works great, however it does'nt store the "open with application" setting when setting it to "always". I tried it with polaris office.

Yes, it shows me a list of previously paired devices (e.g. my BT headset) but not the HR monitor.

Strange ... some more data-points which might help. I'm using Nexus 4/Nexus 7 2013 with the latest Android (4.4.2). Really liking the new Garmin map rendering! I know you didn't want to mess with labels but it would be a huge help if there was an option to disable them or no longer show them at a higher zoom level. The labels overconsume the map at higher zoom levels and it's almost impossible to see the map.
hmm sorry, this won't happen. For MapsForge vector maps, you also do not need such settings, because rendering styles are so clever, that this is just not needed.
Same I want to do here. If you noticed, most lines has labels visible inside this line, not just as text next to. Labels of lines has light blue background and point is, there should be no such label. If there is any, it's a missing definition in style.
Main problem here is, that there is almost unlimited number of line types and definition of every possibility is just crazy. I was thinking about adding support for TYP files, but seems that format is not precisely specified and it should require quite a lot of work and time ...

Hi Menion, I have to apologize - it works for me the exactly same way now. I'm almost sure that the device was not visible in the pairing dialog in Android 4.3 (first version with BLE support) and I haven't tried it since - sorry :(

texts - I think it's not needed to force all to translate these texts again. Sense remain same I think. Anyway if you want, you may improve Japanese texts, it's just on you ;)
I understand your proposal to add more specific descriptions to "Edit" and "Terminate" buttons. Anyway I want to has as less as possible texts. A lot of texts means more work for translators and bigger application. In these cases is question, if these descriptions are needed at all ...
