Title: MyTracks track unchecked after Locus restart
Post by: franc on November 15, 2013, 15:29:07
Hello

I noticed that Locus unchecks a MyTracks track when I quit and restart Locus again.
All other "normal" Locus tracks are still checked, when they are checked before.
I am using MyTracks version 2.0.5
It's normal or a bug?

It's maybe not reproducible??
Is it only on my constellation?
Could someone with MyTracks installed quickly check?

Hello Franc,
My Tracks still works in Locus? I'm little suprised :). What you wrote is not a "real bug". It's just a way how it works now anyway I agree that Locus should remember last loaded tracks also from My Tracks application. On second side, is this really usable feature? I'm more thinking about removing support for My Tracks completely, then improving and adding some extra features.

Also is this app still developed? I'm checking their web site and seems that till July 2013, there is absolutely no progress.

Oh, I see!
Thank you for still supporting MyTracks.
I am using this app, after testing a lot other tracking apps, because it is tracking reliable with the fewest battery consumption.
Would love to track with locus, but it needs double of the battery.
If you tell me a tracking app which just tracks, restart and continue the tracking after a battery change (which I just need on a long track with my SGS2) and needs the fewest battery I would be happy.
MyTracks is very slow developed but from (long) time to time there is suddenly an update, since years. Please keep at least this support. It is no big problem to re-check a track, much better than nothing :)

hmm it's really so bad with battery consumption in Locus? I'll do some more precise tests - finally

might be related to the recording profile on locus?

we will see, give me few days till I collect some precise data

I use 50% of my battery with a half days locus recording

Interval : 10metres
Interval :3seconds
Recording conditions : one
Max accuracy 50 metres
Record only whilst moving : ticked
Record cell ID locations : unticked

a half day = 12hours ?

Meant half of daylight hours sorry. Actually to nail it down more exactly - I generally start my trips at around 7am- 8am, by around 12o'clock noon Ive already used half the battery.

When im tracking, I have screen brightness on zero, wifi turned off, mobile data turned off, sync turned off and "power saving" turned on the phone to try and get a little more out of it. But I am generally taking the odd photograph as well

I made a system to keep my phone charged on longer bushwalks :D

Goes in my backpack for bushwalks. I dont really lose battery when plugged into that as it charges at the same rate my home electricity charger does (1.6amp+ charge rate which is as fast as it charges at home plugged into the wall socket)

So, in 4-5h half of battery is eaten up.

Do you have screen on during your track recordings?
If yes, then definitely the screen takes much more juice than GPS and Locus.

so first two night test

Input conditions
- same device
- airplane mode, places in box on balcony under clear sky
- rec locus: 1m/1s/250m, my tracks: 1m/2s/200m
- start: fully charged device, restarted, only turned required app and started recording. App leaved in foreground on map screen and turned off screen

Result

LocusMy Tracks
start time20:0722:53
end time7:117:04
bat.44%55%
bat. / h5.15.5

DIfference is so small, that I think it's almost same. In battery stats in device, in first case is 95%, 5% system. In case of My Tracks, is from 80% Google Play Services (only GPS) and 16% Android OS (only CPU) ...

1m/1s: both conditions must be met or is one condition sufficient? Don't know how much difference this makes for the battery but in the first case I think only few points will be recorded due to stationary scenario.

The measured battery consumption of ~5%/h does also match roughly to my experiences (didn't do such performance measurements, just can estimate from regular usage where I got the impression that 5-7% is used for pure recording operation).

My screens generally intermittently on and off for photos while recording and also track checking yeah that would definatly affect my battery use

@tommi: I had set both, but it should have almost no effect. It just affect few functions that test validity of new location, nothing serious. Point here is, that if there isn't any serious problem in app, all app should consume very similar amount of energy for track record itself. If you menawhile watch a map or take a photos, it's another story, but track record with screen turned off, should really take very similar amount of energy on all devices

OK, thank you for the test. I will test this as well for some tracks.
One problem I have with locus tracking: the setting "continue track after Reboot" is missing. When I track, this happens often, that I have to change the battery while the track runs. This is one of the most useful features in MyTracks, the track just silently continues.
Possible to do this in locus at least manually?
I don't want to glue two tracks together.
The drawback in MyTracks of this setting is that the app runs a service all the time, I know.

By the way, I set the interval to 10 meter, because with 1 meter I would get much more points, just because the GPS signal is not that accurate. Am I right with this?

hmm did you tried to start locus after you removed battery? Because Locus should notify you that there is some track that is recording but not yet saved in database, so you should simply tap "rec" and continue in recording. You just have to do it manually.

And 10 m is fine. I also recommend this for common usage

4) about track record - I just recorded few minutes outside, then killed locus in system and after start, Locus notified that exists previous track record if you want to continue ... same should happen to you too
God heavens, I tracked, after a while I killed locus and it works:
Just that I press pause Burton and continue tracking perfectly.

So only the little backup problem now, which I can live with, using dropsync, or etc.

My Tracks just has been overhauled in Google Play, dont know yet if it is worth a new try, after a very long time of stagnation.
I will test it a time and report then.
Maybe the inclusion into Locus is again useful :)

Later more...

Hmm seems they added just some sync mechanism for Google FIT. To be true, I hope there will be no serious reason for adding a support of My Tracks back to Locus :).

Do you still think this App is so worst?
Title: Re: MyTracks track unchecked after Locus restart

wait I hope I never told that I think My Tracks is bad app .. that's not true. Even I never used this app, I still think that it's very nice and mainly precisely wrote (from developer points of view) app, that inspired me in few ways. So I like it, really!

Problem was only, that developers from time to time changed it's API without notice to other devs, so suddently integration stopped to work. So I usually had only troubles with this app.

And I also believe that Locus is enough stable and functional, that My Tracks is no more needed. That's all ..

I tried it some days and uninstalled it again as it uses too much battery. Much more now than locus.

really? hmm ... "battery consumption" is never-ending story and I always say - never trust battery monitors :). Once they say "this app is worst", second time they say "nono, this is even more hungry" :). Anyway, thanks for info ...

A test with a short tracking. About hour.
My tracks even let locus behind and I never opened the app, just track in background!
Very much too much battery.

as I wrote many times ... "don't trust native battery monitor". Suggest to test "Battery monitor widget" or "BetterBatteryStats". Both free on Google Play.

Yep. Know it well, good app, I use it sometimes. BUT: always since I used it, always I had SAME results, nearly same at least with the system battery stats. I mean same results pointing to the sucking apps, BBS doesnt show directly the consuming of apps, but Gsam does.
So me for my cents don't use it if I just want to make some aproximately measures.
If I want to check thorowly, I use BBS or Gsam both.
For me, obviously MyTracks has become a battery sucker, this was different before.

oki :). It maybe looks that I wants to protect My Track app, but from my own experience I also do not like complains that Locus consume 3 times more then different apps, where this opinion is based really only on stock battery monitor (mainly in old devices).
