Title: [Theme] Volatile-Bundle
Post by: jusc on January 28, 2013, 13:39:08
further development stopped.
new theme in preparation...

Hello,

Update 2013/05/05

I have changed a few things in my Volatile themes. Now there are 5 Volatile themes.
I made some small updates for the Volatile bundle. There are no significant changes inside the themes, but now you can use the 5 Volatile themes with the Freizeitkarte (<!-- m -->http://www.easyclasspage.de/maps/seite-2.html (http://www.easyclasspage.de/maps/seite-2.html)<!-- m -->) too.

Scroll down for  Volatile-Bundle_V2.zip

I divided the hiking from cycle theme, added the Volatile_OCM and the Volatile_Winter theme.
The Volatile_OCM theme ist inspired by the excellent OpenCycleMap of Andy Allan from <!-- m -->http://opencyclemap.org (http://opencyclemap.org)<!-- m -->.
The winter theme is the "snow covered" hiking theme. But nevertheless you should see the ways. <!-- s:-) -->:-)<!-- s:-) -->
Only in the winter theme are ski pistes included.

You can use original Locus maps (direct download from Locus shop) and (optimized for) kech61s maps from OpenAndroMaps as well. But the layout differs a bit in few points.

Volatile_Winter
Only the winter theme includes ski pistes as you can see below. I made the pistes a bit more visible.

Volatile_Hike
The Volatile hiking theme is inspired by lonvia hiking ways (<!-- m -->http://hiking.waymarkedtrails.org/de/ (http://hiking.waymarkedtrails.org/de/)<!-- m -->).

Volatile_Cycle
Includes the cycleways, regional, national and international cycling and mtb trails.

Volatile_OCM
Very similar to the cycle theme but with more "transparency".

Volatile_Pure
This theme is the base (naked) theme without ski pistes or any cycle or hike routes from national or regional cycle or hike networks.
Cycleways and footways are shown of course.

The themes are mostly created and tested with the Galaxy Note 2, so it´s possible, that there are changes necessary for other phones.
Feel free to use them, but I have one request: If you want to have changes or improvements, or you do these changes by yourself, please let me know or offer them in the same way.

good work ;)
  hope you like additional parameters, but just for your info, this: scale-font-size="11,0.9", means "Use 100% of define font size at level 11 and scale font size by 0.9 for every next level. So in 12 it will be 100% * 0.9, then at 13 100% * 0.9 * 0.9 etc ... so by this, you have probably really small texts ;)

Volatile_Winter is the Volatile_Hike with white forests and meadows etc. and nothing else should be absent.

Another example with original Locus map (Volatile_OCM)

Oh,oh, you are right. I always tested in lower zoom levels.  :oops:
I just updated the bundle (at 20:00) in first post
Thank you for advice.

Sorry guys, please download once more if downloaded before 202013/01/28 20:00!!

This is really great, it gives the map a much more professional design.
Is this your private fork of mapsforge or will we see this in the next official Version?
Hmm... or have I missed something in the documentation  ;)

Anyway,

Hi Christian ... situation is little bit complicated. MapsForge is from my point of view "sleeping", too much on me. I use some older version of their library and finally decided, not to wait till they release some new version but completely rewrite part of it to fit Locus needs. I'll of course publish this code if anyone will be intereted, but not sure if someone will want integrate more then half year old mapsForge code, that is from 25% rewrote :)

Anyway now it's possible to add there almost whatever will be need. What you see here, backgrounds around labels, is just a small part from what we did with Peter. Anyway Peter if I remember have plan, after some testing, publish some blog post what is possible to use as a new tags so ...

Yes, Mapsforge is sleeping - they announced V4.0 - lets see if the most anoying bugs are resolved with this version (small value bug, land/sea, fragile MP-handling aso..).
However, I'm in doubt that anyone is real interested in your modified code - (no offence!!)  ;)  because:

Honestly,
I, by myself would have never touched mapsforge and invested hundreds of hours if someone would had delivered high quality vectormaps with cycle/hike-routes for !!2Euros!! per GB in spring of 2012  ;)

Peter and you have done a real good job!

Hello,

I have a problem will (almost) all rendering themes like volatile_* and other ones in that way that some detail aren't shown correctly:

-- railways miniature

In Dresden (N 51°02.434, E 13°45.168) and Leipzig there are miniature railways ("Parkeisenbahn"). They aren't shown in the maps.

-- streams

Some streams are covered by areas (wood, meadow, ...). So the Prießnitz in Dresden at N 51°04.588', E 13°45.701'. (After outcommenting the rules for forest, wood, ... one can see these streams on the map.)

-- In Dresden the park-area cover underlying areas as wood and meadow at least in the Großer Garten (N51°02.218, E13°46.430').

Either leisure=park should be rendered before landuse=wood and so, or these parks should be changed in OSM.
Moving the rule for leisure=park before the rule for landuse=* helps.

Best regards

Norbert

Changing the theme does not solve the problem. The tag railway = "miniature" seems nor  to be in the Sachsen map (Locus) nor in OpenAndromap maps.

Maybe the tag Layer = "-1" is the problem. I will diskuss the stream and railway problem wit Voldapet and kech61.

QuoteIn OSM the Prießnitz at N 51°04.588', E 13°45.701' is tagged with layer = "-1". Maybe with is the reason
I have this to diskuss with Peter and Christian, because streams is rendered after the greens as far as I can see.

Thank you for this hint I changed it in this theme (attached) without any cycle or hike tag.
If you have any other suggestions please let me know.

Hi Norbert,

Quote from: "koksch"-- streams
Some streams are covered by areas (wood, meadow, ...). So the Prießnitz in Dresden at N 51°04.588', E 13°45.701'. (After outcommenting the rules for forest, wood, ... one can see these streams on the map.)
Its definitly the Layer-Tag. Looking at the stream in question it seems that this layer tag is correct in wide areas, in the parkarea it may be wrong - however its not clear to be seen on the satimages. This is a term for the local mappers to resolve this problem.
However, I can clear all Layer tags prior to rendering the maps (as I do with highway tunnels) but this is not the way to go because the layer tag is important in many cases.
Tagging streams in tunnels (culverts) is discussed here: http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopi ... =16300&p=1 (http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=16300&p=1) - so its not that easy.
Maybe Mapnik ignores the layer with streams, for the park its OK, in the SW of the park Mapnik fails with this strategy. Its a fact that streams in culverts are tagged with layer-1, correct or not....
So how ever anyone render these streams ist more than likely he will fail  :mrgreen:

Quote from: "koksch"-- In Dresden the park-area cover underlying areas as wood and meadow at least in the Großer Garten (N51°02.218, E13°46.430').
Either leisure=park should be rendered before landuse=wood and so, or these parks should be changed in OSM.
Moving the rule for leisure=park before the rule for landuse=* helps.
I will take a look at this issue:
Looking at this Multipolygons (nested MP's Grosser Garten http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.03 ... 5&layers=M (http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.03712&lon=13.76497&zoom=15&layers=M)) I would say its an Artwork of its own,.....    :geek:

Edit: I'v tested the changes you suggested and found no side effects so far - so the new themes for openandromaps are ready for download at my site.

Best regards
Christian

You are right, it was tagged as narrow_gauge, this tag is included in the openandromaps tagset.
Anyway, I will add the miniature tag from level 15 on in the next updates.

The Layer = -1 issue comes up elsewhere in UK maps. My suggestion for resolving it (in part) is to use a partially transparent fill for areas, both colour and image fills. It seems to work acceptably.

For example:
<rule e="way" k="leisure" v="park|garden|golf_course|common|green">
<area fill="#408EC117" stroke="#6fc18e" stroke-width="0.2" />
</rule>

That is better, as the main A5 road is shown, but the more minor link roads are still obscured by the park - most obviously the one coming in from the left of the screenshot to the junction by the cursor. There is another minor road covered by a residential area to the top right of the screenshot as well as the stream running through the park (as well as the woodland in the park, which is a different issue, mentioned earlier in this thread).

No doubt we have problem with rendering ways with Layer<0.   There is internal logic in Mapsforge that print ways in order of Layer tag. I guess that Christian move all tunnels to the base layer ...maybe we can do the same thing.

The issue with Milton Keynes is little bit different. The last vector UK map contains special blue polygon which is placed under lands polygons (it should solve "white sea" issue).  Unfortunately missing ways are rendered under this sea polygon...strange. For new generation I'll have to change the layer attribute for mentioned sea polygon.

BTW: do you understand why this way http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/34844315 (http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/34844315)  has layer=-1 ??  (from point of view of OSM data)

I'm sure that's because it goes under the A5 - but I don't think that's the right way to do that.
However, as far as I could see the problems with Milton Keynes were all connected with Layer = -1. If the park or residential area are not rendered, the roads (and stream) are all there, so they are not under the blue polygon.

Exactly ...the bridge of A5 motorway should have Layer=1 but I'm not a OSM geek so maybe I'm wrong. :)

It depends which theme do you use and data of vector map (release date). There is new map with date:  31.1.2013, which contain mentioned blue polygon.  It is rendered with these instructions:
<rule e="way" k="*" v="*">
<rule e="way" k="natural" v="sea">

<rule e="way" k="natural" v="nosea">

Can you please verify this from koksch:

The stream isn´t shown too with your theme(s) as fa as I can see. So we have to make more tags more transparent I think?

It is now visible in both versions of my theme. The patterns need to be partially transparent as well, which I had already partly done in the brite version. I attach the updated themes.
My original reason for making the landuse/wood patterns transparent was for areas in the UK where park and woods overlap, which is just what koksch was finding in Dresden area. The problem with this stream is different, Layer = -1.

But I would propose, that one of the Dresden OSM mapper should verify it. Perhaps koksch?  :mrgreen:
Either the stream is visible, the "layer=-1" tag should be removed, or if the "layer-1" tag is correct, it should not be rendered/shown in the map.

Dear jusc and john_percy,

this stream is completly visible in the forest (except some small bridges). In the city, the are some parts, where the stream is covered. I'am not an expert for OSM, but I can make some minor changes with JOSM. Does it mean, that the layer should be set to layer=0 or layer=1 (in the forest)? And similar for other streams in the neighborhood?

Best regards

Hallo,

yesterday I looked into sachsen.osm. Almost all streams and drains have layer=-1, some in addition with tunnel=yes, culvert=yes or covered=yes. That means, almost all waterways have the wrong layer.

In my local sachsen.osm, I removed the layer=-1 for all waterways without tunnel=yes, culvert=yes or covered=yes (Aprox. 2500).Then I generated a new sachsen.map (with an render-style, which includes railways=miniature). Now, all seems to be correct at least in a neighborhood of Dresden. However, I cannot remove "layer=-1" on the osm-database.

In the discussion citated avove by jusc, there is clear position to tag waterways nomally without layer or with layer=0, except they are really in the underground.

Hi Peter,

You are right, I set land/sea both to level=-5 so there is no problem with other OSM Data.
The tunnel+highway layers are set to +1 ("0" is not enough), however it could be set to +5 because these tunnels are rendered as seperate style in the theme.

This update is a complete version, but much smaller as older versions. In the theme directories exists only one xml file. All used symbols and patterns are now only once in the Volatile directory for all themes.

Sorry, this time in german...

access-destination.png
access-private.png
cemetery.png
cliff.png
military.png
nature-reserve.png
oneway.png
railway-crossing-small.png
railway-crossing.png
tree.png
glacier.png

http://www.brotbuexe.de/stuff/Volatile_changedicons.zip (http://www.brotbuexe.de/stuff/Volatile_changedicons.zip) extract over the existing set.

first issues: peak icon is a little big, and the woods should be just a little more transparent.

Thanks for the hints for the icon galleries. Realy usefull, I´ll try to implement them in next version.
Red barriers in a cyclemap, that makes sense, if the map and this style is really used with cycling. But at the other side, I personally like it a bit more natural, or in other words, as it is in reallity. And  I can´t imagine, that there are pink cycle barriers in Dresden.  :)

Peak icons to big. Ok I mostly test an compare it with a phablet, there it seems to be ok. But I see the problem with smaller displays.
Woods more transparent. Do you have a suggestion?

@All
the theme is free for use, so feel free to change or adjust it for your own. And feel also free do post your suggestions.

with issues I meant my version. I used 24px icons for the peak/vulcan and that was little too big.

v2: smaller peak icons (12px) and made the wood patterns more transparent: http://www.brotbuexe.de/stuff/Volatile_ ... ons_v2.zip (http://www.brotbuexe.de/stuff/Volatile_changedicons_v2.zip)

Thank you for the icon pack I´ll going to test it at weekend.
I thought about your suggestion to use red barriers for cyclists and using SVG. Good idea  :idea:  And thanks to menion and voldapet to implement this.
So here we go:
I created some simple barrier SVGs with Inkscape. (http://inkscape.org/download/?lang=de (http://inkscape.org/download/?lang=de)) Put them into /Volatile/symbols/
[attachment=1:13khrkid]barriers_svg.zip[/attachment:13khrkid]
They appear in this case at zoom level 17. Gates later in 18, because I found a lot of gates in cities, most used to "declare" as "fences for private" ground. In my eyes they are not really cycle barriers. But everybody can change it for his own.

So, if sombody has some time to test it, please let me know, how it works and tell me which phone type was used, or even better make a screenshot.  :mrgreen:
Please play a bit with these parameters: "scale="0.5" scale-icon-size="17,1.2"", if necessary.

So my here is my first try to implement:
       <!-- barrier -->
        <rule e="node" k="barrier" v="bollard" zoom-min="17">
            <symbol src="file:../Volatile/symbols/bollard.svg" scale="0.5" scale-icon-size="17,1.2" />
        </rule>
<rule e="node" k="barrier" v="cycle_barrier" zoom-min="17">
            <symbol src="file:../Volatile/symbols/cycle_barrier.svg" scale="0.5" scale-icon-size="17,1.2" />
        </rule>
<rule e="node" k="barrier" v="gate" zoom-min="18">
            <symbol src="file:../Volatile/symbols/gate.svg" scale="0.75" scale-icon-size="17,1.2" />
        </rule>
<rule e="node" k="barrier" v="lift_gate" zoom-min="17" >
            <symbol src="file:../Volatile/symbols/lift_gate.svg" scale="0.6" scale-icon-size="17,1.2" />
        </rule>
<rule e="node" k="barrier" v="chain" zoom-min="15">
            <symbol src="file:../Volatile/symbols/chain.png" />
        </rule>

Hi jusc,

I just installed the volatile-themes but I have difficulties starting it.
When I switch from another theme (such as andromaps_hc) to volatile_hike the map the app is loading and loading and loading ...
and the map is not seen.
When I switch back everything is fine.
Do I have to change something, is there a problem installing the themes?

I also tried your V_Scene-themes but the problems are the same.

Thanks for any hint and support.

forever loading and not coming to an end means that there is missed something.
You should have a directory
 ... mapsvector_themesVolatile with three subdirectories and files
... mapsvector_themesVolatile_Cycle

correct?

Same problem as VSZECK...switching to Volatile-hike (or any other),,just loading and loading etc.

....Locus/mapsVector/_themes/Volatile  (two directories  patterns and symbols and files)
.....Locus/mapsVector/-themes/ (five subdirectories..cycle, hike, ocm, pure, and winter  with files)

as stated in your aug 3 post, I'm missing one or more files..what are they..where are they.

I uncompressed Volatilev2.1-1.zip

Thanks

Hi,
is this a spelling error?
.....Locus/mapsVector/-themes/ (five subdirectories..cycle, hike, ocm, pure, and winter  with files)
should be _themes

If it is correct, may you please post the map you are using with coordinates and zoom level of the position, where you try to load the theme?
So I can investigate it.

yes..that was a typing error as I transcribed to forum.  It is correct in the file.

Not certain what information you are looking for, but here is an attempt to answer you request.

Map:  is downloaded Utah Colorado map from Andromaps.  The map in andromaps_hc theme, says maps data from OpenStreeMap ODbt and displays.  In Volatile theme..Map Data is the same...just no display.

Coordinates:   N 40°37.474' , W 105°32.231'

Zoom level:  Does not display at all zoom levels.  In other words zoom level doe not seem to have any effect.

Thanks for assistance.

Previously replied, but seems not to have made it thru...or maybe removed?  sorry if duplicate

Yes..that is the place. Clearly working for you.

I downloaded your offered zip file, copied to the below directory and uncompressed it.

...Locus/mapsVector/_themes/Volatile

six directories (one with 3 sub-directories and files) and files.  Still no display..just unfinished loading.

I clearly have an incomplete problem...Is the directory structure correct.  It is possible a conflict with other files?

Thanks for help and patience.

#
quit locus
rename your ../Locus/ folder eg to lLocus
start locus (dont care about settings yet)
quit locus
copy ONE *.map file to ../Locus/mapsVector/..
install your theme to ../Locus/mapsVector/_themes/ (look screenshot)
start locus

screenshot included..(i hope)

#2
Yes, other *.xml files included.  For example, three state map xml files

#3
worked.  All Volatile themes display.

So..uncertain as to the reason or put differently..what got put incorrectly?
I have searched for instruction/directionss for directory/folder structure/hierarchy. But am missing it..please direct me to it if available.

I need to know how to correctly rebuild/install so that I don't find this error again.

note:..I have paid attention to the few that show structure as locus/mapsvector/_themes/(add themes). Assume that maps go in mapsvector folder....but is it allowed/expected that multiple folders of patterns and symbols should exists.

Thank you for assistance and suggestions.

You should delete the standalone Volatile.xml (only the one file). This cannot be used in this structure.

Normaly after download you should unzip and do as described in viewtopic.php?f=40&t=1739 (http://forum.locusmap.eu/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=1739) (thanks to brotbuexe).

But because my newer themes are using the same symbols the structure should look like in gynta´s screenshot.
In your screenshot only the Volatile_MTB is older, it should have it´s own subdirectories.

Hi Gerd,

if you are logged in, you should find it at the bottom of first post. But perhaps you should use the newer VScale-2 themes.

Hi,
The only problem I noticed is that cycle theme shows only cycleways. In my region many cycleway are tagged as paths with tag bicycle=designated or bicycle=official. Maybe you could add that? :)

Btw. are you still working on your "Poland" style theme?

I have abandoned creating styles for Locus and started working with Tilemill and Leaflet a little. I'm currently working on an overlay with bicycle and hiking routes and cycleways for my region (Pomorskie voivodship).
If you would like to check here is test version (very slow and buggy but works).
