Title: Offline Navigation Tutorial !!
Post by: ketani on August 25, 2012, 09:52:25
Dear friends Menion/Tommi62 .. Would really appreciate a complete tutorial step by step for using "voice guided navigation" offline once the track is recorded !!

I have already shared my woes with dear tommi62 who has been extremely helpful & patient with me (I really respect him for that) !!

I really believe that such a tutorial will be of great help for many like me !!  8-)

ketani, I believe you. But before I start making a tutorial which needs of course some pictures and text and needs to be kept up to date with Locus ongoing changes regarding GUI I try with something similar but less formal.
O.k., you say you have got the track recorded.
Id did this, too and selected a tour from some location in Bangalore, India (I faked my GPS position to this place) to the airport of this town.
1) Make the track visible on the map: Go to Locus menu->Data->Tracks:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/cz0n1lbpnmmi9 ... .47.05.png (https://www.dropbox.com/s/cz0n1lbpnmmi9z9/2012-08-25%2011.47.05.png)
2) Tap on "Navigation":
https://www.dropbox.com/s/q2ph2ubbryegq ... .47.11.png (https://www.dropbox.com/s/q2ph2ubbryegqtb/2012-08-25%2011.47.11.png)
3) Tap on the Track you want to use, here its name is "Track"
https://www.dropbox.com/s/6ntc8ypb8lk9c ... .26.47.png (https://www.dropbox.com/s/6ntc8ypb8lk9cl4/2012-08-25%2012.26.47.png)
4) Tap on "Map" from pop up list
5) Now you're back on the map and the track is displayed as navigation route. To be sure it is really a navigation route check that there are red bubbles on it
https://www.dropbox.com/s/yulz5af53ky1q ... .01.35.png (https://www.dropbox.com/s/yulz5af53ky1qt7/2012-08-25%2012.01.35.png)
6) Move the map to the starting point of the track (here in the lower left corner) and zoom some levels.
7) Tap on the start symbol and then on the arrow symbol for navigation
https://www.dropbox.com/s/b92pootn2za4v ... .05.51.png (https://www.dropbox.com/s/b92pootn2za4v9c/2012-08-25%2012.05.51.png)
8) What happened now? Now you are in the track editor mode and this is really a bit confusing
https://www.dropbox.com/s/yplspbk6fw75h ... .07.15.png (https://www.dropbox.com/s/yplspbk6fw75hlk/2012-08-25%2012.07.15.png)
9) Tap on the symbol "->->o" in the 2nd row from the bottom of the display and select the arrow symbol titled "Navigate"
https://www.dropbox.com/s/kk9g1vuk24orh ... .09.26.png (https://www.dropbox.com/s/kk9g1vuk24orhdh/2012-08-25%2012.09.26.png)
10) Assuming GPS is enabled, tap on the center map symbol in the lower left corner
https://www.dropbox.com/s/w7uqwshx0x3cm ... .11.36.png (https://www.dropbox.com/s/w7uqwshx0x3cm7j/2012-08-25%2012.11.36.png)
11) Check that voice settings are correct (tap on the navigation element (the one with the arrow to the left and 1.0km)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/olx9n8kmqny7t ... .15.19.png (https://www.dropbox.com/s/olx9n8kmqny7ttx/2012-08-25%2012.15.19.png)
12) Check also that your phone is not muted!
13) Go back to the navigation screen
In real life you should here the navigation voice some time before you reached the 1st crossing (in 1km)

Please follow this really step by step!

Quote from: "ketani"Sorry buddy but forgot to ask you , can i turn off my data connection & run this app purely on GPS during the navigation ???
If you have map and calculated route available no data connection is necessary.
However in case of moving away from the calculated route Locus would try to calculate the route newly and needs of course data again.
You can avoid this by switching off "Recalculate " in this dialogue:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/olx9n8kmqny7t ... .15.19.png (https://www.dropbox.com/s/olx9n8kmqny7ttx/2012-08-25%2012.15.19.png)
Locus will change then to guiding mode which means no more voice navigation but a line to the next position on your original route. From my own experience I know that it is quite easy to find back to the route if you follow this line roughly (of course not exactly as this line may be away from any road and go through housewalls, water, etc.)

Tommi I really appreciate your help here on forum! If there will be something I can do specially for you, or something you really miss now (and I forget on it or we don't talk about it), let me know. I can at least promise, I'll think about it :)

And one small suggestion, if you already created small "manual", with how to start with navigation, you may create instead of post here, page here http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/community:main (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/community:main) . If will be then much easier to find.

Anyway as you for sure know, Locus is not primary created for voice navigation, but because it's quite useful feature (I also use is quite ofter in car) I will for sure work on improving. It's just not now so important, so it will unfortunately take some time....

I don't want any privileges. Only one little thing: When you started the wiki pages, I asked for an account and you forgot to give me one. Now it's time to come back to this.
And - I think it's not only my wish - continue your excellent work!

Yep, this is what I hear since last year, December. :(

wiki is open for anyone who want to contribute. I'll just enable for you also ability to upload photos which is disabled by default for "only registered" users ...

about "Navigation improvements" ... I know I know ... it's just not in time possibilities of one man, no matter how big workaholic I'm ... sorry

Ahm, then I need additional instructions:
If I go to Show Page resource I get the following message "This page is read only. You can view the source, but not change it. Ask your administrator if you think this is wrong."
*Edit*: ah, found it. I needed to create an account   . Just though open for everybody means I can simply start writing.

In addition I also don't know how to upload photos.

when I enabled editing also for not-registered, there was so much spam after a while ...

I changed you account so you can now also upload images. Simply start edit page and then tap on bottom image icon. Also if you're not much familiar with wiki, I suggest to check for example how I wrote some pages. Also suggest to use screenshots 240px width, because it's max size usable in phone browser

O.k., 240px width and ???px height?
Title: Re: Offline Navigation Tutorial !!
Post by: Menion on August 25, 2012, 22:35:12
height is not important, you just scroll with web page so it's not a problem. It generally is not a problem, just people also see manual in phone, so it's fine if pages are little bit "optimized".

Sorry guys once again but i tried everything as shown in the tutorial , all i got was a "purple colored route" but in navigation as i move the spot on the route should move with me !! That did not happen , nor was any voice audible though the volume level was 100 !!

MENION'S QUOTE
"Anyway as you for sure know, Locus is not primary created for voice navigation, but because it's quite useful feature (I also use is quite ofter in car) I will for sure work on improving. It's just not now so important, so it will unfortunately take some time...."

I am once again confused after reading this , now please state the actual purpose of this app , I really can't make out what is it's actual use or let me put it this way ... What is the best aspect about this app which makes it unique or different from other GPS apps !!  8-)

The purple road is much more than you had before, I think.

If you mean with spot the green car symbol then yes, it should move with you.
Does the car symbol move with the center of the map If you try to simulate navigation by just moving the map around while Locus is in navigation mode?
Is GPS in sync?
How far were you away from the purple colored road? Remember, Locus switches to guiding mode if you are more away from the road than "Invalid distance" (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/manual ... navigation (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/manual:settings:navigation))
What was the symbol in the navigation element: A '?' or some arrow as instruction at the next crossing.
Quote from: "ketani"That did not happen , nor was any voice audible though the volume level was 100 !!
The voice will only come out if Locus is really in active navigation mode, not in guiding mode.

If above does not help could you try to use maybe the same purple route and do it by foot instead of by car?
And provide me at least few screenshots at a high zoom level during your navigation?

@ketani: You didn't tell us if navigation is now working for you or if you got TTS working.
In latest Locus version 2.6.2 you find a new feature which allows to try TTS standalone - independent of all the navigation stuff.
Please check the tutorial for navigation (which was written on your request!):
http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/commun ... tion_start (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/community:navigation_start)
At the end there is a paragraph starting with "A simple check that TTS is working".

I don't know what i make wrong but  point 2 (Tap on Navigation)is  impossible to break for me. Maybe it's work only with Online maps ?

I can not see NAVIGATION options. I have something like this.

Anotoher more important question.

Is it posiible to create and calculate route ''VIA''. ?

What I  mean: Tap Navigate , create few points and destination place on the map, then  Locus (through internet )will  calculate the route.

Then I reconnect internet connection but still have a Route , can generate Atittude profile etc. ( Navigation turn by turn is not necesary). I have read that something like this is possible ( but without points ''VIA'').

Of course we can create a Route-Track in Locus  points by points ,step by step then we see distances,elevations....
But it takes some time ( we have to ,,tap'' a lot of points) to have exactly Track.

It is better (  we will safe some time ) to ,,Tap few Via points''   then generete (by Internet) route ,see what ahead ( distance ,elevation profile ,ascent, descent) then we can reconnect  internet but is it possible?

Seems you haven't got the category with navigation tracks.
In latest versions of Locus you have the choice to define your own categories for your tracks, select the category you used to store your navigation route.

Yes, I think I know what you mean and yes it's possible.
Maybe the whole process gets a bit easier for you if you follow these tutorials:
http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/commun ... e_creation (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/community:navigation_route_creation)
If you want to use your route for actual navigation:
http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/commun ... tion_start (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/community:navigation_start)

Once you created and saved your route, walk through
http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/manual:track_dialog?s (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/manual:track_dialog?s)[]=altitude
and you'll see at the end the option to "fill altitude".

Does this help?

Thanks for your response ''tommi''.

I have version 2.8.5 Locus, version pro.

Still i can not achieve that screen from your post ( point 2).

I go through seetings and tools but can not find anything that make this work. I don't know maybe i deleted something???

After read links you before send, I tried some tricks with navigation for ex. I know how to merge few routes( to make one from few routes).

Situation.
Internet is working . I tap navigation , create start and end point ,then i have route with navigation, meanwhile i import attitudes OFFLINE from SRTM ( I have downloaded about all Europe) .
Then i stop navigation save route and create second route in this same method. Then another one...
Then i reconnect internet, merge route and have one big route with all details Charts, attitude etc. ( This what i want thinking about route ''via points'').

Off course navigation OFFLINE would be better ( for ex. becouse of cost roaming) but still this metod is probobly quicker then created Track points by points.

I just checked it with Locus Pro 2.8.7 and the screen still looks like that, of course the list of categories depends on what categories you created/used before. Anyway you find your track in the category you used when saving it, it can have any name and symbol.

This final reconnect to internet shouldn't be necessary. Or does merge route require it?

Please differentiate: The navigation itself works without internet. Only for route calculation and recalculation (in case you didn't switch it off).

But to me it anyway sounds that you achieved what you were looking for, right?

Quote from: "tommi"This final reconnect to internet shouldn't be necessary. Or does merge route require it?

I think it doesn't matter , but i want to be sure that internet is not working.
I am living near Czech Republic and don't want to pay for internet abroad. Few years ago my brother downloaded ( he didn't know of course) some maps during navigation in Tenerifa ( 70 km) and the bill was something like 250 euro for this.

Quote from: "tommi"Please differentiate: The navigation itself works without internet. Only for route calculation and recalculation (in case you didn't switch it off).

Yes i know i have turn off recalculation.

About my last problems  ( with points 2) it seems that it works now.

See screen (//http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/4176/screenshot2013021017535.png)

Nawiguj means -navigate .

or (//http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/1858/screenshot2013021008054.png)

Only what i have to read is topic about sound ( i downloaded sound ''Kasia''), but it is not important, ,,on road'' i use Igo 8 or Automapa. And OFFROAD i don't need any sound.

Last thing maybe  you can help me. If not i will place this on wishlist.

If i ,,tap''  display during trip  i get information about point ( attitude) see my screens - in that case 331m ( i have before downloaded about 1gb SRTM files-Europe and more) .
It would be nice to see not only attitude but also distance to this point. Maybe it is possible to have this using settings but i can not find

I mean -not created point (i know it is possible) , just wanted to ,,Tap'' and see attitude and distance to some points.

It is very usefull  for ex. when you are  very tired ( to tired to created points)and wanted to see how long you have to climb.

I had this situation today during my 20 km long Ski Tour route. Last climb  from Czech Republik to Polish boarder near Labska Bouda was not so steep but i completelly didn't have energy. Today i used TwoNav becouse this was WinCe unit, i ''taped'' points near polish boarder and see distance 1,7 km and attitude 1406m. I  was sure that it is not far to ,,downhill''.

Nice to read that it works for you!

Regarding the requested distance information for track points. There is a setting for this but you disabled the display of this useful information:
http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/manual ... ap_objects (http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php/manual:settings:map_objects) : Remove the tick from "Disable extra track labels"
Title: Re: Offline Navigation Tutorial !!

I have this TICK removed . When i have a ''Track'' on map i can see like this  photo

(//http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/682/screenshot2013021109223.png) or
(//http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/6079/screenshot2013021109215.png)

But when all tracks are closed , when i Tap a display i get only attitude.

And wanted to see not only attitude but also distance to the ,,Point'' which is not compared with a track. ( Just a point on the map )

Like this screen below. All track are closed, i tap a screen and see attitude of taped point and distance to this point( from actual  GPS position or from where cursor is placed in case NO GPS -FIX)

Ah, so you'd like to see the line of sight distance between current map center or current GPS position to the tapped point. I think this is not possible in Locus. In Locus, I think, you can only have the distance between a point and the map center (by e.g. activated guiding to this point).

You may like to propose this new idea on getsatisfaction.
