Hello,
Finally Mapsforge based cyclemaps with contourlines are available for download.
Many weeks of coding led to a tool that completly rewrites the OpenStreetMap
dataset concerning the cycle relations bevore its feed into the Mapsforge mapwriter.
The quality of the routes is very, very close to the OpenCycleMap.
I'v set up a website with basic informations
- how to install them
- a map legend
- a high contrast render theme
Everone is encouraged to improve the render theme, its pretty easy.
Only ONE additional key with 8 values have to be rendered.
(Netherlands + Belgium need a second one for the cycle nodes)
A pefect base for a transparent theme would be jurajs hiking theme.
The maps are 100% compatible with the osmarender theme.
The borders of the maps are different from the OSM clipbounds,
eg. for Austria I added the border aera of the czech-republic, the NeusiedlerSee, complete Bodensee, Bratilslava, Deutsches Eck etc..
Big countrys are splitt into logical parts (France, Germany) doe to the limtations of my equipment.
If there is realy need of an additional communication platform I will set up a forum,
but - honestly I will try to avoid this.
Locus, Orux and Naviboard forums should be OK at a first glance.
So, now its time for me to start my training, the making of these maps added 4kg to my hips  , maybe we will meet outdoors 8-)
So, here you can find the maps: //http://www.openandromaps.org
best regard, a plesant summer, happy cycling, walking, paddling or whatever

Update 2012-06-17
- Added Maps for Portugal and Spain
- All files moved back to GDrive doe to registration issues with Skydrive
Major Update 2012-06-16
- All Maps are updated with the newest OSM Dataset
- New process ensures accurate contourlines at the map borders
- France_South now contains the whole Pyraenes
- Render Theme for Locus updated, better Icons for Toilets and Water sources, some minor improvements
- QR-Codes added for direct download to Smartphone, however - I recommend to download the maps to PC, uncompress the files and upload by USB to phone.
- Most Maps are moved from GDrive to Skydrive
Update 2012-06-04
New German Maps: instead of 3 parts (North,Mid,South) the new maps are combined to North/South upon user request. The Maps already contain the additional cycle ways as mentioned below.
UPDATE 2012-05-30:
An user postet an issue concerning not correct rendered cycle ways in his area:
Problems:
- the designated cicle lanes: the key was to catch k="bicycle" v="designated" [done]
- pseudo relations: this was the first time I have seen them, some ways with keys like lcn=yes and rcn=yes are rendered in the OCM like route relations [done]
With the next mapping run (in a few weeks doe to my limited bandwidth) all maps will have the new resolving.
this is absolutely amazing work! Very very nice! (but I'm sure, you already know it :) )
hi kech61,
You were sitting in front of your monitor long enough. Go and loose some weight !!! ;-)
(aka: thanks for your brilliant work and get ready for a robbery. I will steal some ideas from your theme if you dont mind)
jurajs
@kech61,
wow, excellent work!! Thank you very much. Seems to be very usefull for bikers. I´ll go to test it tomorow.
@jurajs
don´t worry. Your work is very amyzing too. I like it very much. :)
Please forgive the stupid question - but will I need the full maps to display cycle routes, or can I just use this new theme on jurajs's vector maps? (or do kech61's maps contain additional information needed to render the cycle routes?)
Sorry I think I have just found the answer here //http://forum.asamm.cz/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=1946
So do these new maps contain all the data in jurajs' maps plus cycle routes, or do I need both maps because they both have unique features?

Hi, both maps contain elevation data, only the maps from www.openandromaps.org (http://www.openandromaps.org) contain the data for the cycle routes.
Basicly these two maps should contain the same data, (except the cycle tags) but there may be some minor differences concerning the zoom-apperance of some pois and roads.
Try jurajs hiking-theme on the cycle maps and check the appearance of roads and pois.

This is great! Thanks a lot for these maps!
We're getting a new bike next month so this will surely come in handy :-)

@All
Thanks for your kind replies and please don't hesitate to post if you have problems with the maps (beside the known issues) - I rely on your feedback to improve my tools.
@jurajs
Robbery is Ok ;-) but Im afraid you find anything in the Theme that you dont know already.

I am testing it atm in Berlin and it's working very well! Thank you for your hard work!
great work. could this also be applied to hiking routes? also are you interested in making your tool available for others to build custom naps, i often build my own maps with specific contours.

Hello Col,
The tools are not for the public, they contain no error-check, not even a check against wrong params these are fed only by "shift" into the programm.
It would take many weeks to release a stable version.
Concerning hiking routes: The answer is Yes and NO.
Yes: look at the attached screenshots, the red lines are the international and national hiking routes of austria, the coloring is similar to the cycle routes.
No: There are a lots of issues concerning the difficulty of the hiking routes. Basicly they should contain a tag named "sac_sale" = swiss alpine club difficult rating.
However, some ways are tagged some not, I checked the ways and fixed rope routes I personly know and .... well....
I dont want to led somone into a fixed rope route where the way is tagged as simple hiking way, this is a serious security issue.

Christian
Ok, Thanks.
Quote from: "col"Ok, Thanks.
Hi,
While I promissed my wife that I will stay away from the computer during summer, the idea to expand my tools for hiking routes is fixed in my brain.
Please be patient, there is so much work that have to be done, the possibilitys are endless.
I will have to talk to Mappers and Hikers+Climbers whats their demand, what standard theme do they use (SAC, OEAV, Kompass, swissmap....) aso.
For me the rendering has to be seperated into colouring of route type (iwn,nwn....) and clear identification of dificult grade...
However, the first step would be a logging tool to analyse the (real-world) tagging conventions beeing used by mappers.
Setting the ruleset for cycling routes was basicly straight forward, I coded this with one eye on the OCM, for hiking I have to find a similar, existing map or defining my own standard.
best regards
Christian
btw: whats your favorite hiking area, up to which difficult-grade do you walk, if I supply a pre-release-map of your favorite area (later this summer) could you check it (way by way)?
Please send me a PN
I'm guessing that OSM data does not currently contain any information about rocky crags/cliffs/outcrops. For me this is what sets a good hiking map apart from a vector map that simply contains contour data.
For example, UK Ordnance Survey maps have the location of cliffs/crags at 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scales. I assume many of the French IGN ones do to. This is essential when walking in poor visibilty conditions - no one wants to walk off a cliff, thinking it is simply a steep but walkable slope!
I understand that this will not be possible until that information is added to the OSM data, but until that day, for me in the UK, vector maps are a 2nd choice to the Ordnance survey maps, for effective navigation and most importantly SAFETY!
Quote from: "skids"for me in the UK, vector maps are a 2nd choice to the Ordnance survey maps, for effective navigation and most importantly SAFETY!
I perfect agree with you,
I spent many summers in Scotland, always with GPS AND OS-Maps, I would never ever rely on a smartphone while walking in Scottish Mountains.
Concerning contour lines: The Alpstein Maps for Austria have a smoothed contourset too, not always very pleasing in rocky areas.

Is it possible to see the data/routes from openmtbmap in the cycle-map as well? Do I need to adapt the theme and integrate mtb:scale and mtb:description? Or has the map not the necessary data for this?

That is not possible at the moment bcause the maps dont have the necessary data. As far as I know, would Chris it perhaps implement in any of the next versions of his maps.

Hi,
The Data is currently not included in the Cyclemaps, and to be honest - around my hometown there are dozends of MTB-Routes.
Only two are included in the OSM-Dataset so I have not invested major afforts in resolving these routes.
Next Winter I will take a look at this issue, its not an easy task because unlike to Garmin Maps there is NO tool for Android
to resolve the OSM-Dataset, all resolving have to be handcoded and preprozessed in Perl.
We can make a deal - you tag all MTB-Routes in the Waldviertel (NorthWest of Austria) and I code the MTB-Maps ;) ;) ;)
best regards
Christian
I will do my very best!
Thanks for your answer. I will wait for the next winter/spring!
Major Update
- All downlaods are now compressed in plain ZIP, this means:
) No more need for special tools for uncompressings
) No more problems with unnown file type (7z), zip is recognized by Android
) Almost every file manager is able to handle zip-files native (I recommend Totalcommander)
- New Maps:
) Special map+theme Iceland (Theme based on Voilatile by Jusc)
) Canada: British-Columbia in 2 Parts, Vancouver aera
- For all maps the coverage can be seen by klicking the "Map coverage" button
- All Maps are now hosted on a big payed account at Google, the download speed is > 2Mb/sec
(Thanks to all users who made this posible by their Donations !)

Hello, sorry for my probably stupid question, but how do I select the cyclohc theme?
I have installed Locus Pro, and coppied all the neccessary files in the right directory, then selected the map in the app, but the map wont load. Now I know it wont load because I did not select the proper theme, but, holy hell, I have no clue how to select it.
Help please :)
Hi Iren,
welcome in the forum.
Keep cool, we'll find the problem.
Go to the Map manager, tab VECTOR. Tap on the tool icon on the right side of the map you want to view. Then tap on "Center map".
Now the map should be rendered.
Did this work?
A nice theme is the next step but even with the default theme (it is embedded in the app) the map can be viewed.
How to download the cylce-hc theme?
Goto Locus shop tab GRAPHICS, tap on "Cycle hc", tap on Download.
Everything fine?
Thank you for quick response. After I clicked on the map centering option, maps render fine now. Sadly, I have no WiFi access for the next few days, so I cant access the Locus shop now, but will try once I will have WiFi connection again.
Edit: But is it neccessary to download the cyclohc, when I already downloaded the .zip file via PC, extracted it, and coppied into the phone into the /_themes directory?

This should be fine. Just follow my instruction to select the theme:

Perfect :) Thank you

Hello Thomas,
Well, seems to be the usual problem with the strikt pline implementation in Mapsforge.
I will take a look at this pline.

Hi,
I checked this issue in brief.
Well....
- All land_polygons are closed (definitly start/end nodes of each pline are the same ref)
- no polyline exeeds the limits (nodes/polyline)
- no JTS-Errors while making the file
- no relations in land-polygones
- a map made with the borders of the test-area shows the same issue.
- both the merged osm file and the land.osm contains 8 land_polygons
The Problem:
- The map file includes only 7 land-polygons, so one is missing, there were no errors while making the map,
the polygon has 380 nodes (so that could not couse a problem).
So, unfortunately I can't solve this issue now, it needs further investigation - sorry.
Edit: You can follow the discussion at mapsforge_dev //https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/mapsforge-dev/KVA5YcaRRMg

Christian, thank you for all your effort.
I still hope for a solution but to be on the safe side I'll tell my wife, she should have a look on offers for rubber boots
Enjoy your holidays!
Hi,
The issue is solved, at least for this map, its a problem with rounding in Mapsforge/JTS that
produces self-intersecting land_polygons out of absolut correct geometrys.
The problem with the zero-contourline rendered into sea is solved too.
I followed your discussion in mapsforge-dev.
Thanks for all your work!
kech61 has updated his maps at http://www.openandromaps.org/en/download.html (http://www.openandromaps.org/en/download.html)
News on http://www.openandromaps.org/en/news.html (http://www.openandromaps.org/en/news.html)
For me the most important improvement are the removed zero lines.
Chris , thank you for your effort.
Click on the picture for better view.
Thanks for the update!
Seems Benelux maps are the only ones not updated :-)

But I think so, because the Netherlands sea is blue now. In the older map it was white. I didn´t load and test Belgium. So I can´t say and I don´t know if changes for Luxemburg are necessary, because there is no coast and no zero lines.
Belgium map is still without blue sea.
Hi Chris/kech,
will there be an update for Belgium as well?
*edit*: sorry for the noise: if I use the cycle_hc theme there is water! No need for updated Belgium map.

Hi Tommy,
No Problem, the water tiles should be visible too with all the lates kinds of the voilatile* themes.

Chris,
may you please have a look to the Italy map? There is a coast line problem in the north of Sardegna.
You can find it close to Porto Pozzo.

Hello Jusc,
Yes I know, this is probably a problem with a coastline which is tagged with nodes sitting on each other too close.
OR someone have sunk this polygon by wrong tagging like the Northcape Island.
Anyway, usualy I solve these problems (there are numerous) by merging a handmade korr.osm on top of the dataset.
EDIT: Found it, 3 wrong nodes causing a self-intersecting poly - I edited this at OSM, should be OK with the next
update of the land_polygons.
I hope I have cought all erratic nodes...

Hi Jusc,
The repaired map of Italy is online 8-)
Hi,
There is a major update available for some European Maps :!:
austria
corse (incl. full coverage of the famous GR20)
czech_republic
slovakia
Spain_Portugal
switzerland
now contain hiking routes (routes that are organized in relations).
The rendering is pretty much the same as for cycle routes,
cycle routes are rendered as dottet lines,
hiking routes are rendered as dashed lines.
There is a Version of Voilatile Theme available too for these maps.
The high contrast theme can be found here : http://www.openandromaps.org/files/them ... aps_hc.zip (http://www.openandromaps.org/files/themes/locus/andromaps_hc.zip)
it includes cycle and hiking ways and will be the standard theme from now on.
screenshot_2012-10-06_1843.png[/attachment:gpu3xrzh]
Here you see the Cycleroute "Donauradweg" + the famous hiking route "Jakobsweg"
Any comments and bugreports are highly apreciated.
Hi Christian,
great!
Will there be also maps for Germany and other maps (e.g. Canarian Islands) with hiking routes?
Just few comments on the news page of openandromaps: The date for the new mapset Africa is wrong and there is no news entry for the hiking routes.
Best wishes,
Thomas
Hi Thomas,
The maps are available at the download area and can be identyfied by the hike24.png[/attachment:s3a3titw] icon.
The new resolving incl. hiking routes will be the standard one for European maps
and popular destinations.
Maybe I will release this too for great hiking ways like the appalachen trail aso.
However, I want to wait for bug-reports till I announce them on the news page
and resolve the bigger maps like Germany, France aso.
I, myself have'nt found any bugs - but..... ;)
best regards
Christian

Hello,
There is an important upgrade for the Cycle/Hiking maps from http://www.openandromaps.org (http://www.openandromaps.org)
The hiking paths now contain a difficulty scale (sac_scale, dav_scale)
All maps uploaded from 22.November.2012 on now contain a difficulty scale as far as its tagged in the OSM-Database.
The color codes and the assignement to the colors is discussed in detail here:
- German //http://www.openandromaps.org/de/legend.html
- English //http://www.openandromaps.org/en/legend.html
Please update your Theme and install it : //http://www.openandromaps.org/files/themes/locus/andromaps_hc.zip
