Title: Contour Lines Only Overlay?
Post by: bubendorf on May 02, 2012, 15:11:39
Hi everybody

is there a tile server somewhere which provides the contour lines only?
I found some tile servers with contour lines, but they all also include hill shading.
I only want to have the contour lines!

Many thanks
Markus

Openpistemap have a contour lines layer, but the server that host the contour tiles is currently broken.
Hikebikemap have a contour lines layer, but only for some areas.

You could check:

Thanks.
I know these lists and servers. But none of them provides data for the Switzerland / Germany area.

Could vector maps with contour lines and a special theme which renders only the contour lines be an alternative for you?

That would be better than nothing.
At the moment I use my own *.osm file. I live in Switzerland near to the French and German borders. None of the maps (CH, D, or F) cover the area were I'm usually active. So I decided to create my own file with the area I need.
An overlay would be better cause I can use that with any map. My own and all the others.
And, I don't have to fiddle with all that map generating process. That allways takes hours.

Don't know if you want to download it.

Some WMS Layers (didn't check the coverage):

http://geoweb.hft-stuttgart.de/opendtm.html (http://geoweb.hft-stuttgart.de/opendtm.html)
http://www.mapmatters.org/wms/57627 (http://www.mapmatters.org/wms/57627)

If you already have a osm file with contour lines, why don't create the tiles? You are halfway there. And you could share them. :) They shouldn't be that big as sqlite when the rest is transparent, and they don't change that often. :)

Aside the vector map, http://openmapsurfer.uni-hd.de/ (http://openmapsurfer.uni-hd.de/) have contour lines as layer for zoom 13-17 and a quick check showed them in france.

See http://openmapsurfer.uni-hd.de/contact.html (http://openmapsurfer.uni-hd.de/contact.html) for terms of use and tile url configuration.

They also have a shade layer, but the terms of use dont look so good for redistribution.

The server is quite fast here...
