Title: [Theme] Hiking v0.6
Post by: jurajs on May 01, 2012, 02:26:47
hiking map theme

this theme is massively inspired by hiking maps from //http://www.freemap.sk and supposed to render in very similar way.
latest version: 0.6 (available here: viewtopic.php?f=40&t=1871#p12497 (http://forum.locusmap.eu/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=1871#p12497))

main features:
- handy for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, etc...
- supports maps with terrain contour lines  (http://forum.asamm.cz/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=1839 (http://forum.asamm.cz/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=1839))
- some new patterns
- rendering order changed slighty (tunnels, military area, etc...)
- landuse rendering is more fancy (more colors)

howto:
- extract "hiking.zip" into ".../Locus/mapsVector/_themes/"
- activate theme in locus in "Settings / Map - advanced / Theme of the maps"

maps with terrain contour lines available here:
http://forum.asamm.cz/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=1839 (http://forum.asamm.cz/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=1839)

@menion - feel free to publish in locus shop

Thanks, jurajs!
Very nice. Working well.

The village captions are now visible in most cases.
(If you want to keep working on this and you need an example where it is still not working:
at N 49°26.703' E 06°57.895' "Thalexweiler" and "Schellenbach" disappear in level 14).

At the moment I can only see one thing that I might want to have improved or changed in your theme:
Small tracks or footpaths (I don't know the correct terminology) - the ones that are striped - are not easy to see at level 13. This is a bit of a pity, because these tracks are the most important ones for us hikers. At 14, their visibility is improved, but still they could be a bit easier to see. Maybe make their colour a bit stronger?
(Could be that my "problem" here is the high screen resolution of my Galaxy Note, on most other devices resolution is lower.)

Other than this small point, I am very happy with your work, can't wait to test it out for real soon (my hiking holidays start 1st June) - thanks a lot.

Hey jurajs,
thanks for your nice work. Is there a feature implemented which looks for the colour of the way and uses this for rendering?

There is a tagging sheme for  hiking ways: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/DE:O ... ag_steuern (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/DE:OSMC_Reitkarte#Wandermarkierungen_direkt_per_Tag_steuern)

This tells to use a tag like this: osmc:symbol=red:white:red_bar:FW:gray.
In this the first part after the "=" describes the main colour (here red). Maybe the using of this for rendering could be possible in a next version.

I'm hoping for implementation :)
Thanks.
Carsten

Edit: What I didn't thought about was that this tag is not in the way but in the relation. So I don't know how to realize this. Maybe you know better ;)

for your info: maybe i found a (little) problem with this theme...

See attachments below:
with vector maps "germany" or "alps" (latest versions by "jurajs"), i see at zoom levels 12 and 13 some "crosses" on the map (i mean this are the borders of the tiles, right?). In lower or higher zoom levels, there are no "crosses" seen. Important: This "crosses" are only visible at aeras with contour lines, not at "flat regions".

Is that a problem within the theme, or the map, or the combination of both?

second picture: zoom level 13

@ gynta: please try if the same issue is also on austria_switzerland map or it is only on alps ... ?
@ PeeKay: are you completely sure that you are using latest map of germany from 15th of May ? that one should be OK/much better. (not able to test it by myself right now) I have also say that this has nothing to do with theme itself, i still believe that it is a bug in mapsforge lib.

@ PeeKay: tested ! its OK. If you are still experiencing the "crosses" on the map, you should try to delete cache located here: Locuscachemapvector

Better, but not really fixed!
@jurajs: you're right, i had not the latest version... shame on me! (my version was 900MB, your latest 921MB)

Now i've downloaded the germany map again, insert it new in Locus, clear the cache, and:
the "crosses" are still visible, but not so intensive that before. now it looks like "little straight shadows". See attachment below.

If i switch to theme "classic map" the viewing is OK, no crosses ... but also no contour lines ;)

Because it's now much better. i think it's OK for me... problem solved. ;)

Talking with Lieutenant McMuffin - (NASA Headquarter 300 E Street Southwest  Washington, DC)
He also has no clue.
Whats next?  :mrgreen:

This bug not appears in the austria/swiss map
btw
in a closer view, you can see some line interruptions
Title: Re: [Theme] Hiking v0.6
Post by: jurajs on May 22, 2012, 19:27:01
hi gynta...

now it is much clearer to me.

alps are combination of sources: dec1 from viewfinderpanoramas and dec3 from nasa. in this case it seems that combining dec1 and dec3 sources is causing a deep (realy deep) and perfectly staight canyon across the land ;-)

at+ch is combination of sources: dec3 from VFP and dec3 from nasa. here it looks like that there is slightly different elevation data. viewfinderpanoramas should me a bit more precise and should not contain "black holes" - thats how I am calling null data areas. but VFP are  available for some regions only.

i guess there is no chance to have totally perfect elevation data at the moment. You can tell mr. McMuffin that they are not providing complete data ;-) and you can still blame nasa too ;-)

btw: similar lines are also near high tatras in SK (dec1/dec3 edge line) and I dont really care. you Austrians are bloody perfectionsts too ... something like German perfectionists :mrgreen:

The hiking theme is very helpful for me. Thank you!
What I'm missing are powerlines. If I integrate power:line and power:pole in the theme it is just the same. No powerlines on the map.

Another problem is I want to see some nodes on lower zoom levels. So I tried to change
         <rule e="node" k="amenity" v="restaurant" zoom-min="15">
            <symbol src="file:/symbols/restaurant.png" />
         </rule>
to          <rule e="node" k="amenity" v="restaurant" zoom-min="13">
            <symbol src="file:/symbols/restaurant.png" />
         </rule>
but nothing happens. Where is my mistake?

Only stuff which was put to the generated map (defined in tag-mapping.xml) can be displayed.
I guess that restaurants are only contained in the map starting at zoom level 15.

Ok, thank you guys. I thought only the settings in the  hiking theme decide on which layer the objects are shown. So there is no chance to have powerlines on the map?
Do you have an idea where the whole process of making a map is shown? Easy to understand for newbies and not for experts?
Thanks ppiter

the hiking theme is really great, thanks!
is it possible to expand the theme still so that you can see the difficulty of the trail (sac_scale), as tracktype. If the information sac_scale at all in the vector map Alps?
Thanks marc07

Just installed this theme in combination with the maps from http://www.openandromaps.org (http://www.openandromaps.org)

Seems to work - finally I got contour lines again, so no need to rely on my nearly two year old download of OpenCycleMap any more :-) Thanks for the great work!

One issue I found with the theme is that the sea is rendered white, so it's very hard to see where the land ends, and where the sea begins. Other waters (lakes, rivers) are rendered blue... would really appreciate if that could be addressed in a future version.

In a side note, I also found vector maps on http://download.geofabrik.de/ (http://download.geofabrik.de/) and managed to convert these pbf files to something Locus can handle. Much more up to date (openandromaps is two months old for my area) but no contour info?!

Thanks, I got the cycle&hike theme already. A very clear one.
Problem with that one though is that all trails look the same, no distinction between the more proper trails and really rough trails. And that's a big issue for Hong Kong's situation.

in this case you should complain on openandromaps.org, there is a support section now from the author.

Hi
I tried to modify your theme a bit to fit my needs. I wanted to show rock_shelters on lower zoom levels and with another symbol.
But it won't show on the map.
I made it like this ://https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0wmgpmocu45i48d/cxYjNaKgCo

My vector map is sachsen.map from mapsforge (//http://ftp.mapsforge.org/maps/europe/)

I hope you can help me

greetings Christian

Hi Hedaja/Christian,
did you consider that items can only be displayed if they are contained in the map at the wished zoom level?
To find if your change is ok in general you could try to change the xml to show the rock_shelters at the original zoom level with your different symbol.

I chane it to the standard level but it doesn't work....I think the key isn't implemented in the vectormap
