Title: "Vegan" icon for restaurants?
Post by: Elmar B. on June 05, 2025, 10:56:48
For the OSM amenity "restaurant", LoPoints uses a "V" which is a symbol for vegan restaurants, whenever the flag "diet:vegan" or "diet:vegetarian" is set to "yes" for the OSM entry.

Is this done by intention? Im my opinion, the "V" icon should only be used when the restaurant offers only vegan/vegetarian food ('diet:vegan=only' or 'diet:vegetarian=only'). The "diet:vegetarian=yes" applies to almost every restaurant, so the usage of the "V" as icon for the LoPoint is misleading imho.

I even saw a McDonald's displayed with a "V", which is far away from being a vegan restaurant...  :D

The symbol should be displayed if the restaurant offers vegan or vegetarian dishes. Also in part.
It may be possible to distinguish between partially and only .
Partly the V green orange and only the V green.

Hmm, diet:vegetarian = yes does not lead to a "V" LoPoint, some restaurants I know only have this tagged and are displayed with a normal restaurant LoPoint icon. diet:vegan = yes but always.

The question is, what do I want? Do I want to know whether you can also eat vegan there (e.g. if a vegan wants to eat out with friends who are not vegans) or do I only want to see purely vegan restaurants? I find both opinions justifiable.

diet:vegan = yes means according to OSM wiki: "This store or restaurant offers a decent amount of vegetarian products." What is "decent" is a matter of opinion and therefore this is certainly not tagged uniformly in OSM.

Difficult.

In the end, it all comes down to correct tagging in OSM anyway and unfortunately this is often not the case. I have found several actual vegan restaurants where the entry is simply missing and they therefore have the normal restaurant LoPoint icon.

BTW: The German LoPoint term "Vegetarisches Essen" is therefore incorrect and should be replaced by "Veganes Essen". Vegetarian and vegan are not the same thing and for many people this is a crucial difference.
