Title: Satelite map - download/caching
Post by: Ninu Nightwatch on January 30, 2025, 12:33:59
Hello everybody, this is my first post :).

I like to download/cache a satellite map (e.g. right now, the whole Island of La Gomera (Spain)).

Is this explanation (https://docs.locusmap.app/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_download#map_caching (https://docs.locusmap.app/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:maps_download#map_caching)) from the docs, about caching the map through loading each view, still the best and only way to achieve it?

Warm Regards

*edit: If caching is still the only option it would also be curious to know, why it is this way? Is it for legal reasons or to reduce server demands, or something else?

Hi,

thank you for your message. To your questions:
1. Unfortunately, I can't suggest any other satellite map/service with free downloading. There is very likely some WMS or WMTS service with satellite / orthophoto map but the cache for WMS/WMTS map is more restrictive.
2. It depends on your needs. Just browse the map at the zoom level you want to use offline. Basically, the map (tile) you browse through on the map screen is "cached".
3. There may be desktop tools for downloading maps, but make sure you don't violate the map providers' terms of use.
The downloading is basically limited because the price of the service we use for satellite maps.

Regards
Petr
