Thank you Menion,
Are you perhaps planning to manage LoPoints on the web too?
Insertion, comments, rating ...
For me it would be much more convenient to do it on the PC than on the smartphone.

It is complicated ... or better. It isn't  :). My (not just) dream is to have all these core features identical on all platforms. Our problem is the speed of development on other platforms (mainly the web). On the web currently works two devs (both part-time), but it is still soooo slow  :'(. So: yes, we need it on the web ... as well as many other features.

Currently > the top task for the next three months on the web and Android is the new version of the data manager. On Android, it is already done for 75%. On the web ... we have not yet started, ehh. Once the core will be done on the web, we may start testing it on Android. Stay tuned ... it will be nice  8). Anyway, I wanted to say that reviews on the web will take some time ...

4.23.1.6 although I don't think specific to a version. route planner: tapped point (existing black on yellow star), plan route to, tapped from current location, bang - see attached. Also observe that waypoint 1 is not displayed on the map.

@Andrew Heard
I really want to simulate this, but no success so far. In your second screenshot is visible that the first point was placed on the identical location as the second (small green triangle below the blue box).

Does it make a difference if you start "Plan route to" with enabled or disabled GPS in the app?

Hello menion
I have the same behavior with V4.23 and V4.24 as reported in the following post
https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/35007-selected-offline-map-not-indicated-in-menu
when I go to the map selection and select a map, this map and the selected theme are displayed.
if i switch to another preset the map and theme info is missing
see screenshot

I have different presets with different maps and themes which are displayed correctly although "no map selected" is displayed in the preset settings.
It is not possible to select a map, even if I create a new preset

ah ha - I had not noticed the two points were at the same position (not my intention). I had tapped "my position" for 2nd point.

Hi everyone,
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Menion and the entire staff for continuing to improve this fantastic program. I am particularly excited about the implementation of parameters from external profiles in the planner. I am also eagerly awaiting the multiple selection sliders. I greatly appreciate this integration. Thank you again.

New version 4.24.1 (on Google Drive or for today for 50% of users on Google Play, 100% tomorrow).

@balloni55
hmm, "Nothing to display" + troubles in Presets > I've risked bigger change and rewrote part of the code that deals with it, because no matter what I do, I'm unable to simulate it :/

@Lupin
you are welcome. "multiple selection sliders" - is it already supported on the https://brouter.de/brouter-web web? I'm now trying to keep available parameters in the app identical to what you see on the web.

I tried but couldn't reproduce sorry, but in the process have found other weird behaviour...

created an unsaved approx. 4km route with the route planner, but then when tapped from the main map, the track details are briefly displayed, then is auto -hidden again - video shows 3 taps

https://youtu.be/E2GeZARSCgU?si=cm7Nk0BirVJwV6-G

unfortunately (?) when upgraded, the temporary route was deleted, so no further evidence for you @menion

PS. the real question is how or why an unsaved route planner route was still visible
after existing the route planner?

Hello,
just some thoughts on recent changes:

Even for Lopoints Locus is not able to read the photos saved in heic format as I suspected, however I saw that by choosing the photos it is possible to access the cloud, in my case in gphoto where the photos are displayed, but Locus is unable to load them reporting the orange boxes with the words "process failed".
When you download photos from gphoto, even if the original was hiec, google transforms them into jpeg and I thought it was a good way to get around the format problem. I also agree with the comment of Patrik in the blog (https://www.locusmap.app/new-locus-map-4-24-review-your-favorite-places-and-take-photos-for-locoins/)

Share tracks with photos
I don't understand the point of creating a default image based on track activity. If someone wants to share something with an image, sends the map or a photo of the trip as a background, it seems like an unnecessary complication to me which also makes inserting a own photo less intuitive. It would be more useful to be able to choose which data to expose and where, so as to arrange the data in places that do not interfere with the image. In this case the fields could be "suggested" based on the type of activity, for example for hiking the difference in altitude is interesting while for running the pace is more interesting...

I continue to really appreciate the attention you put into reducing consumption to a minimum. If there are particular functions within the app that lead to higher processing and therefore higher consumption, why not create an energy saving mode?
I believe that for example live maps for geocaching, georeferenced photos, shading... are services that are often active without a real need, with a single touch they could be turned off and restarted only when needed.

Thank you in any case for the constant improvement work you do, Lorenzo

Hi guys,
thanks for testing and feedback.

"No map to display" error is a real mystery to me. If someone finds a moment, please install the generated Beta version 4.24.2.1. There is nothing new except few logs. So please long click on the main menu > Setup logging > Enable log to file + "Maps (UI)" category. Then try to simulate the issue. The log will be in the Locus/logs directory as usual. Thanks!

@lor74cas
HEIC support > hmm, we fought with it (mainly on the server) and gave it some time ago. @Marek Scholtz knows more. Anyway, at least support for local HEIC photos should be doable, am I correct?

Share image > well, for now, we consider the current solution as good enough for basic sharing with friends and mainly on social networks. What you miss is advanced customization. Maybe later ...

Battery consumption > there are no major energy consumers for now. Optimizations I made were a result of testing and searching for some battery problems reported by balloni and others. There still seem to be some issues, but hidden for now to me.

Hello Locus team. During 2 weeks hiking holiday in the southwest of Germany in a beautiful low mountain range I have tested the current Locus version extensively.

Most of it works very well and there are no major bugs. However, Locus crashes from time to time. I suspect this is due to RAM problems or when too many processes are running in parallel. Crashes often happen, for example, when I make changes to a planned route (e.g. add via points) during a track recording or when I open another app.

Or when I look at my LoPoint photos, open a photo in the gallery and call up the corresponding LoPoint. If I then switch to the map, Locus very often crashes.

A few questions and problems have arisen with the LoPoint photos. When I add a photo, it first appears in the gallery under "For upload", after the upload under "to be approved" and then in normal view after it has been checked. So far its all understandable.

However, it is not entirely clear to me when the pictures are uploaded. Sometimes it happens immediately as soon as I have WLAN. Sometimes it takes several hours or sometimes even 2 or 3 days, and often only some of the images are uploaded. There seems to be no way to initiate the upload yourself. If I delete a photo from the "For upload" group, a few of the other images are suddenly uploaded.

Sometimes pictures don't appear in the gallery at all, even though they have definitely been added to a LoPoint. Regardless of whether I took the photo or selected it from my own gallery. I then have to look for them again (from the folder 0/Pictures/LocusMap/LoPoints or my own photo folder) and add them to the LoPoints.

Some pictures could not be uploaded at all, I got an error message "No success, invisible point" (screenshot 1). I have no idea what this means.

In rare cases, images are displayed as a white area in the LoPoint photo gallery (screenshot 2). When I click on them, only an exclamation mark icon appears without any further information (screenshot 3).

The LoPoint photos don't seem to work quite so smoothly yet.

Track navigation: Generally works quite well, both with routes created with and without navigation instructions. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages, but both offer good results in terms of voice instructions.

Only the annoying problem with the ETA remains, but I'll write about that in another thread.

Hope you've enjoyed your holiday even with rare crashes!  ::)

The problem with LoPoints probably has a good explanation based on the first screenshot. It seems you use offline LoPoints right? Here comes the problem. The online LoPoints database was created a lot later than the offline system. The result is, that the content is not 100% identical. We tried to make them as close as possible, but the current version is on the edge of its limits. So it rarely happens, that you add photos to offline LoPoints, that, unfortunately, do not exist in the online world.

Radim is for a few weeks already working on a completely new version of the offline LoPoints database, that should be 100% identical (or 99.9% :) ) to the online. Hope this year, cause it is quite a big task ...

Anyway white areas and inability to load a photo ... maybe @Marek Scholtz has any idea why this may happens?
Title: Re: [APP] - version 4.24.+ ( 6/2024 )
Post by: Graf Geo on June 21, 2024, 16:50:18
Thanks for the answer. No, the occasional crashes didn't ruin the holiday ;)

Hmm... not all online LoPoints are also available offline in deed, e.g. viewpoints are often only available online. And yes, sometimes I had no internet in the field and could only access offline LoPoints.

However, this does not explain the "invisible point" error, which occurred again and again with the same photos, even when they were added again later in the WLAN. Only after I had opened these photos with a tool and saved them again could they be added to the LoPoint.

There is still the question of the upload time. Whether I can somehow trigger the upload myself.

Have a nice weekend!

Using LM on my S9+ in landscape and opening the detail panel or elevation profile of a track there is a lot of free space on the left and right side. Only half of display is used.
Title: Re: [APP] - version 4.24.+ ( 6/2024 )
Post by: Menion on July 01, 2024, 18:11:21
@Graf Geo
it is a little harder for me. Old offline LoPoints were written probably 6-8 years back. New online LoPoints are new but still use some hacky methods. The content of both databases is also not identical. So for me is currently really hard to tell you exactly where the problem is. If this is not a serious problem, offline LoPoints V2 are our big task for the second part of this year and I hope, that it will solve these problems. At least some of them.

Anyway time when online LoPoints are uploaded is not in our control. We use an Android system called "Work manager" and we only define priority and a few parameters and the exact moment is on the Android. Because you are the first who complain on problematic upload time, I also consider this as a minor problem. Thanks for understanding.

@Gerhard57
well, not an easy solution here ...

I`ve published the Beta version on Friday with some minor fixes + one big change in the topBar layout of (almost) all dialogs. Unfortunately, there is a crash when clicking on the listing detail of the geocache, so sorry for this.

One last note. With a 5 year-old kid, I`m a little forced to have more vacations than I would like  8) so please excuse me for the next two months, if I won`t react as usual ;)

I wanted to write 5-year :).

Anyway, the "problem". An explanation is quite simple: app at the start of the tunnel receives the last valid location. And then nothing ... no clear information that GPS was lost. For this, best should to use some timeout together with the accelerometer to detect that you are still moving. But I`ve still not implemented it yet ...

Thanks, it's not that important. Especially as the problem with the LoPoint photos hasn't occurred since I returned from holiday.

Enjoy your time with your child! 🙂

EDIT 02.07.2024: I have now been able to reproduce it. There are indeed isolated LoPoints that are only available offline. If you then try to upload a photo, the error "invisible point" appears.
That clears that up, thank you.

Menion, Intent via geo:lat,lon... Since 2-3 beta versions I observe a):

a) if Locus is started this way, very often it stays in the starting screen with the logo. I have to tinker then, go back, start again...

b) I send many points via geo:lat,lon in rapid succession (from a Tasker array of positions). I wish it wouldn't move the map smoothly, but instantly. Or even better, not move and center map at all, just add the temporary points. Can you make this possible? The Locus action "map_move_zoom" has the property "animate:true/false", but I cannot use this action because it creates no temp. point.

Has there been a related change?

@luce
thanks for the log. It is anyway not useful when the app crashes. What app version are you using and may you please write to me here your user ID (visible in the About app).

I've improved how the app creates a text log and since the next version, even the production app should record all big crashes into a log file. We will see if this will work.

@Tapio
a) I'm not aware of any change that should affect this. Are you using only a tasker for this right? I'm asking if there is an identical problem with any other app ... always an identical indent (except coordinates of course)?

b) Geo-intent is not a good solution for what you want to achieve. Inserting multiple points on the map should be made over Locus API. It is easy to do over simple intent, but Locus API is required, because content send over intent is not a text but binary data, sorry.

Problem with track map thumbnail.
When i have a track across 2 different maps the track map thumbnail only shows one of them.
As an example i use OAM Germany noth and south and a lock track across.
A long tab on the thumbnail refreshed it but no change.

Noticed same problem by generating hi-res JPG for track overview from sharing menu.

I've put together a simple profile which reflects what it's about. This one creates a random position around you, every 100s (the Tick trigger, 100000ms) and gives it to LM4.

My problem: this runs in the background. Very often I unlock my phone and find LM on top, staying in the loading screen.

https://taskernet.com/shares/?user=AS35m8kdDIMDeveQcQfRglam%2Fah1mTW%2FWcg05FZ39c0i1q%2F77iY3E7cIwxCkXqJTaTA%3D&id=Profile%3ARandomPositionsCron

Note I use "Launch app" plus two intents.

Reason:
- Without LM started beforehand, the intents don't tend to work. In the past it was different
- The Locus Action intent moves the map without animation. It cannot create a temporary point.
- The geo intent can not move map without animation. But it creates the temporary point.

@luce @menion I don't know if the same issue I have with Android 8; I emailed a few bug reports last year - some exception "deep within the operating system" & too hard to fix; only happens with my older A8 phone; completely random crashes can be at any time in LM4 UI usage, although fortunately not if just track recording; maybe different to "crashes in one of "our" libraries" but thought I'd mention Luce you aren't the only one with crashes.

You may remember the problem me and some others were having that after start, the name of the current map is often not shown (instead "No map" or sth alike). This has been fixed, yeah - but for the worse: Now it's the opposite: The name is always shown correctly, but not the map. My devices, at least 2 tabs now, startup with empty map, but the last map name is correctly shown in the sidebar. I have to re-select the map to make it appear. Quite annoying, as you can imagine...

Nobody else having this effect?

This has been fixed, yeah - but for the worse: Now it's the opposite: The name is always shown correctly, but not the map. My devices, at least 2 tabs now, startup with empty map, but the last map name is correctly shown in the sidebar. I have to re-select the map to make it appear. Quite annoying, as you can imagine...

Nobody else having this effect?
Ok, found out more: Only happens with offline maps in Orux maps format. Other offline vector or bitmap maps are restored correctly.

And more: Similar things happen when I choose an Orux map as overlay: It works, but when I switch map and then try to switch back using the "recently used maps" list, it's not shown. I have to select the map from the full map list again.

Should I make a video?

The many options provided by Locus make it very versatile on the one hand, and on the other very prone to having ultra-complicated menus that scare the average user who seeks simplicity as a first approach. Some of these options are used by maybe 10 people so it makes me smile when someone finds a bug on one of them, even more so when it relates to maps of an application in direct competition with Locus. My "thank you" was not a personal attack, if a function exists it is right that it works properly, but it is more to point out the fact that sometimes we should also think about removing and simplifying instead of always adding something new.

Nah..., not about importance, just target audience. I apologise, my post was a bit unclear. I'm rather thinking this kind of stuff should better be handled via an official ticked because there's likely nobody to address in the user forum.

Out of curiosity - why do you use these kinds of maps instead of OAM/Lomaps?

Fair enough, apology accepted. I decided to post it here, because Menion is in the audience ;), and the appearance of the bug exactly coincided with the fixing of that map name display bug, which also I was one of the reporters. So I think it makes sense to point that out here. Granted, correlation != causation, so maybe it's a coincidence the bug appeared at the same time.

And I'm using that Orux format a lot, as are some colleagues, because we have a friend who provides maps in that format. I had no reason to believe this is rare or common.

As I wrote above, we have a friend who provides these. And OAM/LoMaps is really not the right comparison, as OruxMaps are bitmap, not vector. And when it's about external bitmap maps, I think there's no alternative to Orux, otherwise Locus only supports its own format, which I have never seen anywhere else. So Orux may be a competition, but offers a format that is at least somewhat known, whereas Locus-bitmap maps are not. I may be wrong there.

Well, OruxMaps is also "just" sqlitedb, so there must be more to it. What I mean to say is that the fact that Locus uses sqlitedb, doesn't mean the actual db structure is the same as in other sqlitedb maps. You can't judge from the outside.

I used sqlitedb for the most simple data collection for raster maps: lon, lat, ZL are the keys, pointing to a BLOB (the image).
This is a format many apps can handle, it is not a Locus invention.

Pardon me for not havin experience with that. All I'm saying is that it's no obvious without some experience/knowledge whether Orux is fundamentally different or not.

@Tapio
display of points on the map ... hmm let's try one experiment. Instead of "com.asamm.locus.ACTION_TASK", send "com.asamm.locus.DATA_TASK" action with the following extra

"data" instead of "tasks"

content:

{
  map_point: {
    "name": "Point name",
    "icon": "internal icon name, file:// path or full URL",
    "lon": 14.1456,
    "lat": 50.4564,
    "action_after": "optional, one of CENTER, CENTER_ANIMATE, OPEN_DETAIL"
  }
}

I've not tested it, but it should work :P. ::)

@slarti76
OruxMaps ... funny comment @Tapio  ;D. Unfortunately, I believe there will still be more than slarti ;).

This is a general topic where all sorts of problems and features are discussed. Most of us use only a minority of what Locus Map can do, but -> when it's implemented and it does not work, it should be fixed (or removed for good), even if used only by a single person.

Back to problem > fix with the "map name" was only aesthetic. I'm also testing one Oruxmap and it works without a problem. Do you have this issue with all such maps?

This new intent is super interesting, a hidden gem? but I can't make it do anything. Nothing happens in LM.
If this method would allow for putting stuff directly into the db, that would be gold.

Action:
com.asamm.locus.DATA_TASK

Cat:
None

Extra:
data:{map_point:{"name":"test", "icon":"Z-ico02", "lon":8.9999, "lat":50.9999}}

Package:
menion.android.locus

Target:
Broadcast Receiver

Icon ... best is to export a point with the wanted icon into GPX and there will be visible expected naming for the icon.  Same if you will want to use icon from custom icon pack.

Sure, demo task. Please test the icon part as Menion suggested, haven't done yet. Also haven't tested the map move commands.

Menion, would a database path attribute be possible, so we could directly implant points into the database? Would open up for great possibilities.

Turns out this was a totally different problem, nothing with OruxMaps: I was still using the AFA build, and it affected all maps situated in folders other than Android/media or Android/data. Now that the Android/media way is working well, I switched to non-AFA and moved all my maps, and the problem doesn´t appear anymore.
As AFA is not an official thing, you can ignore this problem, I think.

LoPoi Popup: When I move the cursor over a LoPoi, a popup is displayed.
When I tap on a LoPoi, a point info window opens at the bottom and the popup is also displayed.
If the "Point information" window is open. The popup is superfluous because it contains the same information as in the window.

@Tapio
as I wrote, the best is to export the point with the required icon into GPX. There, you will see a correct icon in the "locus:icon" tag. It should look like "file:Markers.zip:Balloon Star Orange.png". Custom icons may be placed only in the "icons" directory, so in the icon name is only the name of the file + png icon itself. Maybe SVG will work as well, I have not tried it yet.

@freischneider
Hmm yes, it probably works like this. Both systems are for now completely independent. Not a big problem right?  :). It also has a benefit > you have visual confirmation on which point you have clicked.

Btw, the new Beta version yesterday. If there won't be any serious complains (for example against the attempt to unite the style of bottom popup menus in point & track detail), I would like to publish new version next week.

And have a nice weekend!

No, that's not a problem. It would just be nicer if I could see the map better. But if I move it a little, it's gone.
I also have visual confirmation by highlighting the dot.

Hello menion
why did you change the order of the icons in GC listing bottom panel?
The "puzzle button" Add-ons is more intresting than the "share button" in this case ?!

best solution for user would be to order sequence in
settings/Geocaching/Point screen, but for now there is no puzzle button available :-[

Post by: Menion on July 29, 2024, 08:24:24
Hello balloni,
order was modified based on priority and general usage. It makes sense. Under "puzzle" exists custom add-ons useful mainly (only?) for geocaches. So only a minority of users really need and use this. Compared to this, "Share" is a generic functionality useful for everyone.

Also, you have defined two custom bottom icons for geocaches. Choose only a one and there will be enough space for this "add-ons" button.

Hello menion
are geocachers the minority of locus users? :o
In the 12 years I have been using locus, I have only used the share function 3 times at most.
In contrast, I use the "Add-on" button on every geocaching tour

No matter......
It would be helpful to have this puzzle icon in the selection of geocache stettings

Minority? No, it should be around 25% of all users. That is less than "all users", sorry.

This option also can't be directly in this setting, because it already IS part of the bottom panel. Just in case, there is more than 5 items, it is placed into a three-dot menu.

What feature from this "add-ons" menu are you using so often? I'll also enable more precise logging of clicked buttons, so I'll know better numbers about how many times each function is used. Will let you know later. Thanks for understanding.

Tap on any cache and in the cache detail is at the top right corner (or at bottom buttons if configured over settings) main cache geocache menu right? Here, right below "Notes" is the "Update geocache" button.

I made this one and the add-on does not supply it. Simply, everything under the "puzzle" icon is supplied over external add-ons, and in the case of Geocaching4Locus, you know, I try to completely replace this add-on with my own internal solution. This is close to finish I believe.

Hi guys,
you all here probably know what changed in the recent Beta versions etc. Anyway, after some fine-tuning, I've published new version 4.25.0 (topic here (https://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=9008.0)). Because it is a Friday and I'll be off the next two days, it will be published on Google Play only for a few users to test, anyway it is already available on Google Drive.

Thanks all for the help. Hope, everyone finds something useful in this update. Have a nice weekend!
