What are those small icons and are they removable?

The map legend says Kissing Gate

These are barriers (e. g. gates etc.).

The conspicuous way they are displayed in the LoMaps also bothers me a lot and is one of the reasons why I tend to use LoMaps less. Unfortunately, there is no option in the themes to deactivate them.

Only in the "City" theme are they not displayed.

This icon represents a general gate (without type specification). I can understand that city areas are overcrowded with these symbols but they are useful for cyclists (especially in the UK).

Anyway, you found a bug because offline LoMaps use the old symbol for the gateway. For online LoMaps we have prepared a new and less distinctive symbol. We have fixed it in offline LoMaps as well. It's still not ideal, but hopefully, it's better than before. See the attached screenshotlomaps_gates.png

Ok and thanks, voldapet.
The new symbol is much more discreet/inconspicuous. Good!  :)

I prefer the OSM term "barriers".
Some barriers (barriers, gates, bollards, etc.) can be obstacles for cyclists. It is therefore useful that they are shown on maps.
