Hi guys, the new version brings a lot of interesting changes and even more on the background. I have to thanks a lot for tests most of you made during last weeks. It really helped a lot!!
Version 4.20.0 was uploaded to the Google Play, but was rejected because of some missing info in subscription screen. It will take some time to fix it, so I've at least uploaded APK to the public Google Drive directory. If anyone wants to test and use this version, feel free to do it.

after closing (exit) with confirmation dialog I get the following popup after a while, some 30s or something
Just installed the afk on my S10e ...
I can start LM4 but after 3 seconds there is no movement possible: the app stops working. :-[
When I use these 3 sec to move to settings all screens are working. But the map screen forces the full stop.
On my (test) tablets the version is working.
It seems as if a short time with no movement on map leads to the stop.

Yes ... but only the hardware buttons produces the crash.
With touch zoom it's working.

I can't use the route planner anymore.
When I start planning only one profile is offered (hiking). no bike, no car, no motocycle ...
and when entering the second point an error occurs.

Isn't it normal for external BRouter?
@Menion, I notice recording stop problems via intent, my also be a problem with Falcos plugin. Needs more debugging on my side. This happened since you announced changes to LM startup system.
Tasker log has... see screenshot. My impression is, the intent does not reliably work. The error times in screenshot match with my logging.

@menion - this new Aspect map shading is quite interesting but could it be further enhanced with color saturation proportional to the slope? i.e. a very pale color would suggest a flatter area, and very strong color (like the current) suggest steeper areas. This would then combine the best attributes of existing Slope shading. At present even quite flat areas have strong color, perhaps too strong, and maybe defeats the purpose.
Menion, the intent system seems severely harmed, this kills automation. Record start and stop, that is. IDK yet why recording didn't start today. Tasker tried like 5 times.
As for recording stop + save, I find numerous duplicate tracks in my database. What happened? The intent managed to save the track every time, but did not stop the recording. The script then retries every few minutes, resulting in multiple saved tracks 😒

Here's a recording toggle. Checks state via Falcos plugin. Currently I cannot 100% replicate the problem.

@Menion, a first finding.
- Auto pause/Rec only when moving are off
- LM app is NOT started.
Now if the "Recording start" intent is fired, the Android location icon in the top system bar appears for a short while, then disappears.
Turns out that the rec_start intent only works if LM app is fully loaded.

I also have the behavior but only 1s. Which doesn't bother me.
But 8s is of course too much.

BRouter error > do you use an unsupported combination? We made a bunch of big improvements (due to new system of customization + route warnings) so internal LoRouter profiles are no longer compatible with routing data provided by the BRouter application itself. There is also an opposite "problem". BRouter now introduced a few parameters that are not (yet) compatible with offline LoRouter, so profiles from the original BRouter repo may report an error when used with offline LoRouter.
So:
- use "public brf profiles for BRouter" only with the Google Play BRouter app. Offline LoRouter currently does not support all BRouter features (this will change in the near future), but if you don't see any error, it should work fine.
- use "LoRouter profiles" only with offline LoRouter. They most probably won't work with BRouter app

Installation of the older version is more complicated because it requires un-install the current version first. Suggest waiting a day (or in the worst case two) till a new update is generated/published.
What settings do you want to modify for BRouter? All are available in the Route planner directly.

from time to time I receive an error on my phone:

So should I report to Falcos Github? My impression is, plugin is pretty much abandoned. It would be great if ASAMM could take over the plugin if he agrees. And it's open source after all.

In this case, based on your error, it looks like you are using an older BRouter version with the new routing profiles, is that possible? Suggest updating BRouter from Google Play and setting up profiles again from scratch.

1. switched my navigation settings back to "use brouter" ... and LM4 starts and stops without any chance to interact. (maybe not a good idea :-\ )
2. Deinstalled brouter and installed from google play ... but nothing changed.
Now I can't reach LM4. Luckily it's snowing and no going out ist planned for today. ;)
Hope that this also could be solved with new version.
PS: Installed LM4 - 1117 ... and can start and use Locus (with LoRouter online)
... and after setting up brouter from scratch it's working too. 👍

exciting - I think this new method has great potential
Dashboard resizing bug: Expert setting > dashboard cell vertical positions are not adjusted when
Fullscreen Mode is changed, so any cells near the top are hidden under the Android top notification panel, until LM is restarted.
Suggestion: main menu > About app > App info > VERSION: show all 4 version digits if non-zero, currently shows 4.20.0 instead of 4.20.0.1

these are not some minor versions, but regular release versions. Better should be 4.20.0 RC1, RC2 etc, but because I also publish them on Google Play, all are simply named 4.20.0.

Within the latest beta (free version) there's still the problem discussed here https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/32125-wrong-elevation-in-route-planner of calculating wrong elevation values (BRouter) or no elevation values at all (GraphHopper) because of not using internal elevation files

I planned a route with profile 'walk' and get warned about 'heavy traffic' :o
The route is also not perfect, see top near scale - might probably be due to osm. I walked the route shortly and was able to use each sidewalk of the street.
BTW is there any way to deactivate these new warnings, i don't need them and map is pumped with unneeded signs?

@Sonny sorry it is so complicated. Latest public Locus Classic has this implemented incorrectly and in the case of Locus Map, you need at least Silver to work with elevations in the app.

Yes ... when pressing a hardware button in map LM totaly freezes immediately.

I see. Would it be a good compromise idea to use elevation files just for Route-planing-only in LM4 free version (just Locus internal, automatic use of these files during route planing) :) ? Nothing else (no manual update of track or point elevations, no corrections of GPS-values, no shading etc.)
Otherwise it would make no sense to use other route planers in LM4 free than LoRouter Online because of their display of wrong or 0m values. And in worst case people are blaming Locus for displaying "wrong" elevation values of a planned route.

sorry, but elevations are globally blocked in "Free" Locus Map mode.
External BRouter application has elevation data inside, so there are values (probably based on 3" HGT files). The only real problem is GraphHopper. But this is, in the Locus Map 4 used by less than 5% of users and we already discussed options to get rid of it ...
Menion, yes there are values in Brouter - but these can be total garbage, as discussed in the linked thread.
Of course I understand, that you have to decide which features are free and which are not. In this case Locus free maybe should better display no elevation values at all (in case of GraphHopper or BRouter) instead of wrong or 0m

Hmm ... tried it now severel times: and LM always stops
First try:
- I made the zoom buttons (+/-) visible ... and there is the same behaviour. Sometimes LM makes a little zoom step but most times systems stops directly.
- deactiovatd "hardware buttons" and even then the software zoom buttons leads to this crash.
next try:
- changed theme to the build-in theme: same problem
next try:
- switched to a locus map (online and offline) with the build-in theme: nothing changed
next try:
- cleared cache ... but no change
Now my state is:
- original Locus Map
- build-in theme
- hardware buttons settings deactivated
BUT:
- no zoom with soft buttons. Only with touch it is possible to zoom in and out.
Attached a screen shot when zooming (-) worked one time. System stops while creating tiles/map screen.

Uff ... got it.
I deleted all visible points and tracks ... and the problem disappeared.
Maybe it's a malformed geocache/point/track ... nevertheless zooming works now. 👍
I tried to find the trigger until I found the ONE geocache that triggered the zoom problem.
If I make this visible/invisible the problem is triggered immediately.
I couldn't find anything special in the cache itself...

Just loaded some hundred geocaches ... and there are (some🙄) more caches that causes the problem. 😥

Hi, because the warning for "heavy traffic" is just a short segment of otherwise identical street, it looks like the sidewalk is not mapped correctly. (There is no warning for secondary roads if there is sidewalk). But unless I have a look into map data, this is just my guess. Please specify the location more.

Sometimes with latest beta versions my tablet displays a message "Locus Map has stopped" in the middle of the screen. It doesn't appear to be a regular Android message, or even regular Locus message. But I do not explicitly have LM4 running at the time the message is displayed!

Yes, I use 1118.
Yesterday I repeated reducing geocaches down to ONE cache ... and it produces the stop.
Today I wanted to reproduce it with this cache (Ok, yesterday I deleted it and loaded it new today) but no problem occured with this geocache.
Loaded 100 caches made 50 visible and the problem occurs while zooming.
When all caches are hidden there is no problem with zooming.
Only visible points (I have only geocaches as points) produces the problem with hardware or soft buttons. While zooming with touch is working always.
With visible tracks there is no problem.
PS:
now after several tests I can reproduce the problem.
If I
add a waypoint zoom stops after some zoom in/out.
When I delete the waypoint the problem doesn't occur.
Locus closes when I search for locations and directions online and move the map.
Locus Map 4.20.1 published.
Available over Google Play or the Drive directory. I've made a bunch of various fixes, so hope it helps.

In the new version of Locus, the following has been fixed
@Menion: is that the ...1119...? It was available on GD this morning, but now the folder is empty. Or is this a 1120 maybe? To come to GD?

unfortunately, the version with a fix (problem with choosing a routing profile), that came an hour later, was not refused by Google, again because of some insufficient informing of users about subscription, omg. So, most probably one more version will have to be published next hours/days, who knows? But nothing serious. The version on the Drive is perfectly fine to use. Sorry for this mess. :'(

4.20.1 - still an only quite recent issue on tablet where the full-screen panels are now a few pixels larger on all sides than the screen size. Example below (in preset settings), but random check of others suggests it happens to all full-screen windows

That new "long-press-to-discard-recording" is a nice functionality, but has no security query - I don't think that's good. Could be accidentally triggered...
And another thing about recording profiles, probably not new, but just recently noticed:
There's the settings "Preferred folder" and "Auto-save after stop" - shouldn't the folder setting be grayed out when auto-save is off (and thus positioned below the auto-save slider)?

Doesn't work for me:
- Long-press when track has 0 or 1 point -> discard without warning (acceptable)
- Long-press for >1 point -> auto-save (without any interaction)

Ah, ok, then the folder makes sense, still - didn't realize that. I rest my case ;)
settings > track recording > <profile> > Save & display: off - I am still seeing 2 behaviors - 1) mostly the track details screen is displayed 2) sometimes the screen is not displayed. I can get used to one or the other but still seems like a timing issue.

@menion - yes, that screen capture is from the tablet in portrait orientation. It has
only happened recently.
@menion - request for new Preset setting: settings > Maps > Offline maps > Text size. For some Presets I'd leave the size @ 100%, but for others it would be nice to make larger, say 175%.

Yes, the segment with warning is a secondary road without a (mapped) sidewalk.

As I see, the current behavior was implemented at 06/2022! and no complaints since then. Long-press simply calls "Stop" and the recording service takes care. In your case, seems you use auto-save, so the result is quick and correct from my point of view. Do you have some accidental clicks on this button?

Ah, ok - and now I tried long-pressing the button in the sidepanel, and it works as expected.
I could nit-pick that it's two red buttons with different long-press behaviour, but then again one has a square in it, which definitely means "Stop", and the other a colored circle. Let's say it's not 100% perfect, but I don't have a better idea, so let's leave it at that!

@Menion, hill shading is painted on top of mapsforge captions, is there something that can be done? It does some harm to readability of text. I guess not...? ideally the theme decides when to paint the hill shading layer.
Hello Menion,
in the new Beta the geocaching website only disappears for a few seconds. Maps are only displayed for a short moment and then the geocaching website returns on top in Locus 4 Gold.
I'm not interested in geocaching and don't want to register. Is there a workaround?

I don't (yet) use it. As beta-introduction and as being your gift this nagging is absolutely ok :)

I note from https://www.locusmap.app/locus-map-4-20-and-other-pre-christmas-news/ about the opening "animation". I've never seen this on an actual device (3). Does the device need to be younger than certain age/ OS version before the animation occurs?

I like the new routing profiles layout. But I noticed, for cycling there's still no default profile that provides a safe route across a city, eg using residential streets and bike paths instead of major roads. Distance doesn't matter; survival does! Years ago I found "safety.brf" somewhere, possibly I tweaked it, and just now manually added it back to the options in Locus. Yes, this is perfect. Could it not be added to the default collection? (EDIT: on some experimentation, it seems "Touring" produces reasonably safe routes. Is this evolved from "Safety"? It wasn't obvious to me; I don't think of my cycling as "touring", so it was the last profile I tried.)

On my devices I see the startup animation sometimes, sometimes not. It's finished before my eyes get there. I think it would look better a bit slowed down, and if the startup happened concurrently, it shouldn't cause any delay.

@Menion I was experimenting with https://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=8701.msg74100#msg74100 checking #steps to navigate on a tablet. There is no GPS signal. Just desk exercise. The steps were as per my post. It is quite possible the Start and end locations were close, certainly on the same screen. But I have tried to reproduce without luck. I guess if that is an issue a more user friendly error could be displayed though.

How to reduce font size just of that one error screen? There was no incident ID I could scroll or drag up from bottom. That screen capture is the whole tablet screen with default Android font heights.
Can I force to purge the tracks.db?I deleted ~4000 tracks, but the db size still is the same 400 mb as before. Or, when will it happen?
Mine has exceeded 1 GB, a real challenge, for backups e.g. and space in general.
I had proposed long time ago to support a second "archive" track DB, that may reside on ext. SD e.g. and will be part of searches, but not part of backups (you do that once to an offline device like OTG USB drive or a PC).
That mechanics should of course include the pruning of the original DB (your point in the post).
So in your experience, does pruning never happen? I could of course export to gpx and rebuild it, IMO without any information loss, but that's some work.
I'm not even sure if LM4 can still import 1000s of tracks, I remember there was a crash issue.
IIRC Menion wrote db prune is up to Android, or Android does pruning at some point...
Maybe DIY on Windows with SQlite is the way... Maybe https://docs.locusmap.app/de/doku.php?id=manual:advanced:map_tools:corrupted_sqlite helps.

@Menion, just tested. Import GPX to database folder. Select 850 files, click ok bottom right: Crash LM4 + auto restart LM4.
EDIT: Zipping them and pointing Locus to that zip file is a workaround.

OK did some testing. Everything is fine.
a) Deleted several 1000 of tracks from LM database via the trackmanager. After exit LM4, the db file immediately went from >300 MB down to 160. So for some reason now it instantly did the cleanup action.
b) sqlite3.exe alternatives also lead to a result, a working and small db.
sqlite3.exe tracks.db "VACUUM"

sqlite3.exe tracks.db ".dump" | sqlite3.exe new.db
While this is good news, it does not resolve the dilemma: if you want to have all your track history with you (without sharing it with the world in some online service), you have to swallow enpormous backups in every cycle.
That is something only Menion can fix, right?

Database size
A secondary database (archive) is not planned, sorry.
Anyway, what we discussed is improving sync logic.
Currently, all data needs to be on the device and if "sync" is enabled, all are synced to the web. What we plan (it may change because we mostly discuss it for now), is to offer options like:
- keep folder local, sync (currently all folders)
- keep folder local, does not sync
- local folder data on demand, all on the cloud
Re: import 100s of single files, I've created a test set and sent you a link. Select all on import, it makes my LM crash.

Can you maybe implement an easy logic, eg if it finds an additional db, it would include it into track or wp manager... but create no backup from it, or sync it? But well, maybe intransparent behaviour. Or hidden feature...
Secondary db is just what I did. Imported tons of stuff into it which I need to analyse rarely. It has my complete movement over years.
Thanks for the link. 141MB of GPX files ... quite a lot. I expected that the app could handle it, but it ended with an out-of-memory error. Something, that should be solved on the app side, but it requires quite a lot of debugging.
So problem is registered to the "Problem to solve later" category. Thanks for understanding.

I've already figured out where the problem probably was. The crash of the LM 4.20.1 application after upgrading from the previous version was caused by the active Strava heat map overlay. A clean install of the latest version of LM without restoring from a backup was OK. After the subsequent complete recovery of the data from the backup, the application crashed again. Only restoring from a backup made in LM3 with the Strava Heat map overlay off helped.
Now the app works as before.
Maybe my knowledge will help you.

Thumbs up to this! That was one of my wishes when the cloud sync was started - would be great to have all tracks in the cloud, but can choose which folders to sync locally. Then e.g. my tab can always have everything, whereas my phone only stores what's currently needed.
Sure, if you want a full non-cloud backup, you still need a device where everything is synced. So this doesn't fulfil all wishes, but I think it would be a huge step forward - selective sync is kind of a must, anyway...

Locus crashes when recording is stopped.
Beta 4.20.1.5
I start the recording. After the tour I want to stop the recording via the red circle. Locus crashes every time and the recording is still running when I restart it.
I then installed the widget. This allowed me to stop the recording.
No crash here, but I stop via Android Intent.
when I open a recorded track and then click on Altitude graph. Locus restarts itself.
@menion - the size of LoPoints(offline) icons isn't influenced by Settings > Points & Tracks > Point Icon Size or LoPoint Icon Size. What am I doing wrong? Sorry for newbie question.

I use fullscreen mode (expert settings). When I start Locus, I got a black bar at top. I have go to route planner or enter settings, and when back at map the black bar is away, full screen given.

IMHO the routing data screen should be optimised to easily update data. I have to temporarily switch on automatic updates or have to deselect elements, hit ok, then select again, ok, to trigger an update.
Maybe also the grid can be extended by degrees and maybe update-time per element (square). Only makes sense if enhancement is simple to integrate, e.g. add rd5-name and rd5-date.

Point Icon Size", not "

Routing data downloader - I do not perfectly understand what you want to update.
- update of segments when "Auto-update" is disabled does not work for you?
- routing data per degree > why this? Are current files too big? This is anyway technically complicated and I see no benefit.
- update time per element > what does it mean?
