Hi,

I got the "Gold Abo" and did some tests with the new Routing System.

cool stuff, but.....

so here's my list of issues where I think it's not yet golden but a little rusty:

  • I had a hard time to initially set-up Locus to use the external SD card. Found the panel to switch standard directories. "router" missing in the list of detail directories. Switching the global Locus directory to the SD-card worked. But afterwards my first attempts to download routing data files failed with only a generic error message ("operation not successfull"). Very annoying. After copying an initial rd5-file to the {ext-Sd}.../router/segments4 directory subsuquent downloads were successful. No idea...
-
  • "fast recalculations" do not work. With more then 50km routed distance ahead, automatic recalculations are just not usable.
-
  • There's no way to stop a (long-)running route calculations. Don't know if there's a timeout. But with the routing library integrated my expectation was that there's an explicit "stop current route calcilation" funtionality, for the navigation mode as well as for the route-planner. Currently, the only way to stop a long-running operation is to restart Locus Maps
-
  • The online LoRouter does not recognize nogo-areas. Excpectation is that online/offline behave similar. At least for the functionality that is offered to the user, like nogo-areas. For profile modifiers ("is-wet", ..) they are not offererd in online mode, which is good, but gold-standard would be to have them working in online-mode as well.
-
  • I'm not completely sure if the current heading is considered in recalculations. I did some tests but did not found positive proof that it is. Expectation is that it works in favor of going straight ahaed and using the next junction, instaed if doing a u-turn

Don't get that wrong. Great work overall and I would like to switch to the integrated offline-router for my personal use. But missing "fast-recalcluations" is a showstopper for me. I would be happy to help get that working.

regards, Arndt

Yes, we are finally official  :-*

I'll re-organize a few categories on the forum and the new topic for LM4 is here: https://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=7273.0 .

Well, what to say ... is Thanks enough? Maybe not, but it is probably not important. I believe, you here are mostly satisfied with the changes we did last in almost two years. Weather at least in central Europe starting to be really nice so I wish you mainly: stay healthy (families as well) and enjoy at least a little hike & bike adventures. It is something that connects us right?  ;)

@Andrew Heard
nope.
- LM Pro never had "inner" Brouter. If you talk about using an external BRouter app from Google Play, it remains possible no matter what version/premium plan you use.
- alternative routes were also not part of the Pro version.

Maybe you used some beta versions where this was enabled? But never in official production.

Family subscription: look, we almost two months computed expected cost on our servers etc. For a very long time we worked with only a single subscription. But it looks that running servers, LoMaps, LoPoints, all these stuff are so expensive, that the price can't be lower to be safe on our side. So increase? Yes it is. On our side, as well, a huge. Because of the price, we decided maybe a month ago, to create also a Silver tier. This is quite a cheap alternative for users without the need for cloud services and also a big risk for us.

Do I understand right?

I'm a Locus Pro user and am currently using the Beta of V4 from Google Drive.
If I want to use the new "official" Beta from Play store, I have to subscript the Beta channel for the "old" Locus Map "free" and will get the new LM4 (where I have to select which subscription model (base, silver, gold) will fit best for me)?
After installing the Beta, I can delete Pro and Google drive Beta versions, without getting any data loss?

To the Locus and OpenAndroMaps community,

I have generated big updates for my OpenAndroMaps Locus themes. The new themes "Outdoor" and "Desert" will replace all my previous themes (outdoor, desert, navigation, outdoorV4, desertV4).
The themes got many new features, improvements and corrections. You will find more details on my website www.maiwolf.de/locus/ [in German]. There is now also an online legend for the themes as well as a PDF download version of the legend.

Always download the newest version on: www.maiwolf.de/locus/

I am happy for any comments, suggestions and ideas. I will try to constantly improve the themes in the future.

Bernard

New version *** MapGooglePlay_4.0.0 - Beta 2_984_beta *** ready-to-play!

Enjoy weekend!

@poutnikl
hmm oki, so what is the suggestion? I still use the Pixel 2 device (5''! screen) and never had a problem with this and I currently have no idea, how to make it better.

Themes - Vector maps / Re: Theme rule set rendering
January 22, 2021, 11:31:01
As you said, it needs to be split out to separate rules, something like this:

<rule e="way" k="landuse" v="allotments|meadow|grass|orchard|vineyard">
  <area fill="#DDE8BB" />
</rule>
<rule e="way" k="landuse" v="allotments|orchard|vineyard">
  <area stroke="#C2D881" stroke-width="0.5" />
</rule>
<rule e="way" k="landuse" v="orchard" zoom-min="14">
  <area symbol-scaling="size" src="file:/patterns/Landuse-Orchard.png" />
</rule>
<rule e="way" k="landuse" v="vineyard" zoom-min="14">
  <area symbol-scaling="size" src="file:/patterns/Landuse-Vineyard.png" />
</rule>

The original rules would have worked in the v3 'engine' but in 'v4' the implementation is different and has this weird behaviour.

Themes - Vector maps / Re: [Theme] VanLifeMapV4
January 18, 2021, 09:44:11
It is quite a few things:
- I like the colors of internal Locus theme and Mapy.cz and I want these colors for v4 maps.
- I draw fill of all the areas first and afterwards all their outlines so if there is one area over the other I can see at least the outline.
- I add some new patterns for areas and I intend to add more so that the areas are more distinguishable.
- I draw dashed line over the rivers if they are only seasonal.
- I draw the rivers with slightly different color than the reservoirs so you can see the riverbeds as if the reservoir was empty.
- I draw all the poi even if there is no space so they are overlapping but you can see everything without zooming.
- I made different icons for drinkable and not drinkable springs.
- I have a different way to draw hiking and cycling paths and their difficulty (just for hiking for now)
- I can hide all the fill on the areas (background) and use the map as overlap for satelite imaging.
- I have more visible colors for protected areas so I can see clearly where the border of the protected area is.

and possibly more differences :)

May I ask where the Lo* - profiles originate from? Clearly, they are not all from brouter default profiles? I assume some of them are based on poutniks profiles? Or did you create them all from scratch?

Do you plan to create issues and/or pullrequests in the corresponding source github repos for changes users suggest here? Or do you plan to maintain your own (proprietary) modified versions? Because if the former, other users could benefit as well from improved profiles.

And while you are at it: could you please reconsider (optionally) supporting ALL profile parameters instead of only your whitelist? I wrote this before: I think it's ok to use the whitelist as a default. But you could add a setting in expert settings to enable support for all parameters (for power users). I think it is ok to display the description texts from the profile instead of the translations Locus offers for the whitelisted parameters.
I recently enhanced my profile with yet another (non-whitelisted)parameter which significantly changes routing when altered. Without this parameter supported by Locus (unlike e.g. brouter-web), I'm forced to create even more variants of the profile with this parameter set to different values.

I hope you get my point.

zossebart

Thanks for tips regards "surfaces", I'll look at it.

Zooming in "slides": I was thinking more about adding them also to segments. When you tap on the segment, there already is a chart just for this particular segment, so why not to have a way types/surface here as well.

Themes - Vector maps / New style: FzOAM
June 27, 2020, 17:44:03
Hello, fellow walkers, runners, bikers, hikers and mountaineers!

While searching for the best map and theme source I've found two great projects:
1. OpenAndroMaps is already a huge one, with well tuned maps and many themes (Thank You!).
Unfortunately in my opinion, none of them was easy to read and/or detailed enough.
2. Freizeitkarte on the other hand isn't that widespread, but is an impressive project (Thank You!).
It is far more detailed and has really good themes.
The only major flaw was that the theme details appear too late when zooming.

I wasn't brave enough to tune the zoom level for every detail,
but tried adding the useful landscape details to the feature rich Elements theme for OAM.
Most of the textures are directly borrowed or heavily inspired of FZK.
The documents and key file are slightly tuned accordingly.
I am providing the result if anyone finds it useful.
I don't have the time and talent to support and develop the new theme.
If someone decides to adopt it, I will be very happy!
Until then I hope You enjoy it.

Happy journeying everyone!

Themes - Vector maps / [Theme] OS Map
May 29, 2020, 17:45:48
The OS Map theme tries to emulate the Ordnance Survey 1:25k and 1:50k map styles as closely as is possible within the constraints of Locus Map and data provided by the vector maps. It should work with both LoMap and OAM maps (v3 and v4). I must give credit to John Campbell for his Voluntary UK theme that I used as a starting point (v. 190101).

The OS Map theme also provides a darker variation of OS style of map designed for use at night-time to help avoid spoiling night-vision whilst keeping a recognizably Ordnance Survey style of map.

The theme now consists of four main theme files, day/night for v3 maps and day/night for v4 maps. There are two PDF map legends, one for day and one night.

Here is a comparison of the same map rendered with: Internal Theme, Voluntary UK, OS Style and my new 4 OS map styles:

Removed access cross hatchings on footpaths accidentally left in from donor theme (UK Voluntary)
Removed surface dashes on 'white' roads accidentally left in from donor theme (UK Voluntary) - If this is going to be in the theme then I need to think about how to do it in an OS style way...

v20200530
Fixed validation errors (one was a real issue in V4 theme for railway stations at zoom 13, rest were technical errors but not impacting display of maps).

v20200607
Split v3 and v4 theme files into separate day and night theme files so they can have different map=background tags, different PDF legends and increase performance.

The theme ZIP files and PDF legends are too large to attached to this post (limit of 2MB) so, I am now releasing everything via a shared google drive folder:

    OS Map Theme Releases

Link to latest release:

    OS Map v20231218.zip

Links to the latest OS Map Legends:

    OS Map Day Legend
    OS Map Night Legend

The theme is now provided in a ZIP file form that can be simply copied into Locus Map's _theme folder, e.g.:

\<root>\Android\data\menion.android.locus.pro\files\Locus\mapsVector\_themes (i.e. for LM Classic)
\<root>\Android\data\menion.android.locus\files\Locus\mapsVector\_themes (i.e. for LM 4)

No need to unzip the theme file anymore.

If you have already started using the earlier OS Map theme version then you probably should delete it before installing this updated version as it uses the same theme folder called "OS Map" but now uses four different named theme files - to cover day/night themes for v3/v4 maps.

Note that the legends are now included in the theme and can now be viewed directly from the theme menu in LM 3.46+ via a long press of the theme icon, see attached screenshot.

From v20231218 onwards, the theme now includes support for public rights of way (currently only LoMap v4 maps). There is now an appendix in the PDF legends that explains how these are interpreted, which is mostly UK specific:

Screenshots of selected areas, tidied up and cropped in Paint.net, Word document output to pdf. I wish there was an easier way.

I used PowerPoint set to A4 portrait and save to PDF. PowerPoint is so much easier to create graphically rich content.

What would be  really cool is if someone could create a small map that is actually a legend built with all the supported ways and nodes, then you would have a legend built that works with all themes.

In the following post I used a script to semi-automatically convert the Waymark-V2a LoMap theme to be compatible with the MF v4 map theme renderer, i.e. so it would "work" with v4 maps:

https://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=6948.msg59452#msg59452

I used the Waymark-V2a theme purely as a test of the script as it is quite a large theme file, and it "worked" with v4 maps, in so much that it is displayed something. However it was pointed out that it didn't display the hiking trails, cycle routes or waymark symbols.

I started to look at why and realised that the Waymark-V2a theme was developed purely for Locus Map maps and did not appear to support OAMaps. I have made some further tweaks to the converted version from the link above and got the cycleways, hiking routes and waymarks to display now. You can also select/deselect the hiking/cycle routes. However, I do not think it will be possible to deselect waymark symbols for specific OSMC colour routes. For now, the theme only switches on/off all waymark symbols. Also not finding a way to not show trails when waymark routes are selected - other than overdraw the trails, but the route labels still show... so I left it alone for now).

I've not packaged it up into a ZIP with all the resources yet, because it is really just an experimental theme at this stage which will require some more testing/feedback, especially considering the original is set up for LoMap tags and not OAMap tags. There will probably be many other missing items for this reason. Probably a Waymark-V2a user will spot them very quickly!

To try it you will need to have the Waymark-V2a theme already installed and also a v4 map that supports OSMC waymarks (the UK maps I use do not).

You just need to copy the attached Waymark-V4a.xml and Waymark-V4a.png files into the same directory as the original Waymark-V2a.xml theme file is stored (will depend on where you chose to install Locus Maps I suspect).  Will be something like:

/storage/6345-6342/Android/data/menion.android.locus.pro/files/Locus/mapsVector/_themes/Waymark-V2a/
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/menion.android.locus.pro/files/Locus/mapsVector/_themes/Waymark-V2a/

I'm wondering if there is any point using the Waymark theme, now that Elevate 4 supports Waymarks...
