Other features / Locus Shop
February 08, 2012, 13:27:05
Hi guys,
last weeks I'm working on new Locus Shop. Place where will be possible to download, and also buy, various data for Locus. For buying will be used in-app billing and main purpose of this, is to offer this possibility to some map providers. We'll see what they say on it.

Anyway, I also want to have there big part of content for free. Just interesting data that may come useful to anyone. For now, I found some cursor icons and icons for categories here on forum and also one czech navigation voice, that is for sure for free with possibility to distribute it. I was thinking about ability to allow people upload own data but for now, I'll just leave it as is. So, if anyone have something interesting, that wants share with others (nice icons for categories, some working custom screen, map cursors, navigation voice that is for sure free), let me know

Also, if anyone will be interested, after some testing I'll allow selling content also over this Locus shop, so if anyone is skilled, you may create nice custom screen and sell it over Locus shop.

That's just first info. Ask if you're interesting in anything or write me if you have something you want to share with others. Just small warning. I'll allow to share only data that really worth it. So some personal databases of interesting places will probably not be best thing to share with others. If there will be interest, I may create section for some public sharing. But this probably later ...

One note - if anyone from older users, want to test this feature, let me know (by PM, I'll send you link for download). I don't want to put testing version with this feature here on forum for now, till I'll do some more testing.

And how does this looklike? :)

Other features / GUI of Locus
January 15, 2012, 21:26:34
Hi guys,
hot topic for me (last days) is GUI of locus. As you for sure know, Locus do not use all view components default one (system), but I use own styled for example top panels, closing X in dialogs and some more. I want to know opinion from more then one people

also I create new small settings dialog for styles of tracks and waypoints on map and want to know, if you prefer default android style of settings or you feel comfortable with system I create

we already discussed this here viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1537&start=20#p9414 or here viewtopic.php?f=26&t=974. This is fine, but it's usually discussion with one or two people (not enough for serious opinion)

also one main information - I don't want to radically change style right now. I just want to know, what you prefer (because without a lot of negative points, I'll keep current style    ) ... thanks guys

Other features / Starman user
January 10, 2012, 19:00:12
Does anyone know, who is Starman?

Because almost everytime someone post any critics comment on market, Starman appear and write something nice and mainly funny. I with wife always looking forward to his comments, so if anyone know him, give him thanks from me :D

examples:

today
user: "Really Bad UI   This app apparently does a lot of cool stuff, but It's got the worst user interface I've ever seen. It's hard to figure out what it can do and then how to do it. "
starman: Post from "Hey You.." is BS spam sabotage. No one can be that stupid.

damn! new posts overwrite old ones ... so funny comments remain unfortunately history, anyway Thanks Starman ;)

Other features / TODO list
January 04, 2012, 16:36:50
UPDATE 16.1.

still thinking and trying to find best solution :), so, if you'll have some time, check

UserVoices - http://locusmap.uservoice.com/
GetSatisfaction - http://getsatisfaction.com/locus

also examples full of data

UserVoices (Swiftkey) - http://support.swiftkey.net/
GetSatisfaction (Mozilla) - http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging

I personally do not know ... weird :). Every system has it's own, anyway after playing with it for some time, UserVoices with more then one forum (one for wishlist, one for issues, ...) together with helpdesk (currently only one topic on navigation - voices) seems like best solution for me. Specialized discussion will remain here on forum, hmm?

Thanks for time and feedbacks!!

9.12.2011 - Locus 1.14.6.7
fixed version 1.14.6.6, so read news below. Here is fixed rotation of map and also added ability to load openair space waypoints

9.12.2011 - Locus 1.14.6.6
another bugged version just for you ...
for my big surprise, after whole day, I was able to rewrite complete background that handle map panning, zooming, etc. And app still works ... :), anyway - result seems to be another small speed benefit, but MAINLY, finally, perfectly working TAR maps and also removed some calibration issues on maps that had some rotation in calibration. Currently are supported coordinate systems, that I already have home in some maps, so UTM, Mercator. So to everyone, if you have any TAR map, try it! If map will not work, send me it and I'm sure it will work ... finally ...
  • improved TAR maps handling! (more above)
  • new feature in Locus API
  • fixed issues with quick "Add route feature" - here viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1386
  • fixed broken BreadCrumbs support
  • hmm and many other fixes and improvements, I think that you don't care a lot :).

damn, it's fast now ... :)

EDIT: ah I almost forget. You may also try legal implementation of Google maps. It's quite funny :) ... but with some improvements, should work
EDIT2: already know thanks to gynta, about issue during rotation, so ignore please map rotate for now. I'm already working on it ...

8.12.2011 - Locus 1.14.6.5
... so let's continue with improvements
  • quick track create - discuss here viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1386
  • better labels system. All items labels are now draw at top. They're also little bit faster, limited at low zoom, limited to 100 (otherwise show small title "Too much labels", integrated this feature viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1379
  • hopefully removed crash bug when zooming and panning at once
  • many small fixes, as usually, enjoy

... REMOVED DUE TO LOT OF ISSUES ...

6.12.2011 - Locus 1.14.6.2
Uff, I'm dead ... this is hardcore testing version. Thanks to started adding support for another maps, I started rewrote a lot of code that already worked quite well. Hmm, not all works now so well :). Anyway this is testing version, working as Pro version till end of year, so enjoy. Also please, report every issue you discover mainly on functions that worked before
  • support for RMAP format - viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1377, hmm Joeloc, should you be interested in some small post on Locus blog with some info about this format? Mainly how can user create map in this format and maybe where can anyone obtain any interesting maps? (if they're at least little bit legal) ...
  • thanks to this topic - viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1379, and also changes due to RMAP and many coordinate systems support, I completely rewrote initializing and drawing of tracks and POIs. After some test, all is around 20% faster. Also is there few optimizations that improve speed at some zooms. Dark side is one new issue. When I play a lot with, let's say 10k points on map, after a while (different time), Locus crash on some android system error. So without warning it just disappear. Quite nice ... and even after few hours, mistake not found. So nice program for tomorrow
  • also check new style for displayed tracks .. do you like it?
  • now fully working support for Aero overlays, this topic viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1353
  • hope that finally solved problem with touching on items when map rotate
  • also disable lock screen should finally work correctly (so disabled when app close)
  • some other small improvements and bug fixes .. .
  • and finally, don't forget to support locus on facebook here http://www.facebook.com/locusmap . I don't like facebook a lot, but to be true, it's nice place where to quickly post some interesting news ...

Other features / Statkart maps
September 22, 2011, 13:35:46
Guys I need your help. I was communicating with some guy from Statkart and after few mails, I'm not sure if I'm stupid or if they hide something! So if anyone is interested in using Statkart maps in Locus, check this and tell me your opinion.

my email 16.9.2011
Good day,
I wrote You few months ago about ability to use your maps in Android Locus application. There was problem with fact, that Locus is distributed in payed and free version.
Today I noticed that Backcountry navigator, mainly payed android application, use your maps. So I wanna ask if condition has changes and if so, please let me know, what are conditions (terms of use, payment, ...) to add your maps into Locus.

response (today)
We refer to your e-mail of 16th September and earlier contact regarding use of maps from the Norwegian Mapping Authority, Statens kartverk, in an Android Locus Application.

As previously mentioned, the Authority's open services are limited to private use, meaning that commercial exploitation is not allowed. Ref. terms of use at http/www.statkart.no/nor/Land/Kart_og_produkter/Produkter_og_tjenester/".

Our answer is therefore still that as long as your app is published (offered) in combination with commercial advertisements, it cannot be based on our data / open services.

so I wrote :)
thank you for your answer. In your email, you confirm me, that the conditions remains same.

If so, then my main question from previous email, remain. How is possible that payed application use your maps even this is not possible to your terms of use.

and answer ...
What you describe is technically possible, but as already stated, not allowed according to the current terms which you accept by using the relevant data service.

.. damn, am I stupid or is impossible to receive normal answer on simple question?? Looks they really do not want answer ... if so, then I'm sorry but Statkart maps will not be in Locus because of impossible communication ... omg

News & Hints / [APP] - version 0.6.x
September 09, 2011, 12:36:16
new testing version of WhereYouGo application!
15.9.2011
- so this is RC for Android Market. I currently do not have much time to go out to test it on some real Wherigo, so if anyone want ;)
- I also suggest to finish already played cartridges. It's not sure that save files will be compatible

10.9.2011
- I have reports some map issue! I did some small updates in new version but I still don't see some problems with map display! So please report (ideally with some logs) some issues if you'll have some times and taste! Thanks ...

9.9.2011
As I can see, size of app grown unfortunately from 1 to 3MB, quite a lot. Here are reasons, together with news

- translated to 19! languages (this is almost half of size - much text is used only in Locus but there is no simple way how to separate this)
- added support for Locus online, offline (personal), vector maps
- current (8.9.2011) code from OpenWIG project
#153
21.10.2011 - Locus 1.13.5.2

  • improved TTS system, now should work with most languages
  • ability to colorize track by speed or altitude during track record ;)
  • improved itinery screen

17.9.2011 - Locus 1.13.1.1

  • ability to "edit" points on already stored tracks
  • complete new server (MapQuest) used for navigation. Now should also works
      - correct existing of highway
      - re-compute forward during ride
      - correct street names
anyway count that for navigation, there are missing some images, so instead of "take exit" you should see just a question mark. Images will be ...

20.8.2011 - Locus 1.10.0
  • release on Android market - Free & Pro

One surprise for you (owners of Pro version) - testing version of addon - Vector Maps
- this addon allow you to download prepared vector maps from web server. Almost all (mainly correct icon is missing) is ready to market release, but I would like to test it a little. This addon will be payed for probably 1€ for a limited time ... cca half or whole year, I'll see. Main purpose is to cover cost of web server that have to be payed. Anyway this addon is now for free to you, so enjoy ;). I'll remove support for this free version later so download as much as you can ;) and let me know how this works for you and if you feel comfortable with actual downloading system.

EDIT:
1. don't forget to test "Voice navigation"! - info about voices here
2. let me know if download speed is fine for you (should be little bit slower but hope it's enough) and also how you like beta of voice navig!
#155
Since version 1.9.8

Locus allow "navigation" along route computed by MapQuest server (or any other)

Here is short description, how to create and use voice files
  • get some voice – I found interesting site here, from where you can download really huge list of probably free voices for TomTom
  • convert voices to some usable format – so, look once more on previous link. There is description, how to use program VIFTOOL. For you are important these steps
    • download voice template and save it to some new HDD folder (e.g. C:my_tomtom_voice). You need to save these 3 voice related files: VIF, CHK and BMP file.
    • download VIFTOOL
    • install downloaded Vif Tool to the folder with the voice template.
    • goto Start > Run > CMD
    • in command window type "CD c:viftool"
    • in command window type "viftool.exe split dataXX.chk" to extract all OGG voice files from tomtom CHK file.
    • you'll get directory full of *.ogg files. And now simply convert all these ogg files into one zip file (only files, not whole directory).
  • so result now will be four files
    • – dataXX.bmp (image (optional))
    • – dataXX.chk (original voices (not needed))
    • – dataXX.vif (description file (required))
    • dataXX.zip (voices (required))

*.VIF and *.ZIP (you can also *.BMP) files, copy directly into Locus/data/nav_audio directory.

INFO: description of all voices is here, together with some more info about this format

INFO: actual 'BETA' system allow to change voices, when you start navigation and tap on arrow symbol

Other features / Voice NAVIGATION
August 03, 2011, 15:53:48
I'm opening this topic for discuss about new feature for Pro users, "Navigation" from data downloaded by CloudMade service.

I need to tell you, not to expect something like fully working voice navigation. This is something I don't really want to do. Voice navigation is done in my second project SmartMaps and I have "full teeth" of some voice navigation things :). Anyway main purpose of this feature is to allow some better guiding on preloaded tracks. There will be also possibility to define own tracks with some "directions" commands with some small extension to GPX file.

So try, test, use, and let me know if it's better then nothing ;)

[attachment=0:3c18dyjh]1.9.7.2.apk[/attachment:3c18dyjh]

  • improved support for Field notes (now also "Field notes manager" under geocaching tools)
  • many fixes like memory issues, not editable geocache waypoints, some reported errors ...

12.8.2011 - Locus 1.9.7.1

I'm going on small vacation now, so here is actual build with some more improvements, so please test it. In previous version I see 92 downloads and almost no comments, so when you download this testing version and use it, and see some place for improvements of any function, write here just short note ... "this function bla bla is terrible, I need to do at least this bla bla" or something like this. I appreciate every response that bring some idea ;)

anyway, news:
  • added OpenSeaMaps
  • "navigation" is now centered on map car (even when position is only 'near'
  • improved colors of track during "navigation"
  • locus now remember some important settings when is killed during minimize
  • rewrote unlocking of screen - little funny now, suggest to try :) ... I'll improve it a little, probably switch circles for some arrows pointing into center
  • some more small fixes as usual

So see you guys, I'm looking forward for your response and hope you'll take care of some newbies :)), see you in Thursday...

  • auto-zoom based on speed (will be only in Pro)
  • basic of navigation - try compute path by CloudMade service and press 'guide' on this track (is also in Pro because only pro can use CloudMade)
  • final decision for Vector maps - in Free will be limited to 250 tiles/one run of Locus, so you can close it and run again (same with WMS maps - there is limit 100). In Pro - no limit. Anyway downloading will be able only thanks to small payed (1€) addon, that allow this. Otherwise you'll have to create maps by your own or download from some site. It's on your own. This is done, because I finally have bought web server and I'm just setting it (it's slow work for me - I have never done something like this :) ), and I hope that this addon will cover server cost.
  • some small fixes

EDIT: hmm I discovered during field testing that distances below arrow are wrongly calculate, so I'll work on fix now ...

27.7.2011 - Locus 1.9.4.2
Testing version
  • better "News" screen and also screen with differences against Pro version
  • many changes in import and mainly handling KMZ files. This is main reason for this testing update

21.7.2011 - Locus 1.9.3
  • release on Android market - Free & Pro, hope that all main bugs are fixed :)

8.7.2011 - Locus 1.9.0.2
Ready for big testing?? ;) - use testing Free version. This version really need testing and also I need a lot of feedback, so don't shy ;)
  • First version of official support for vector maps. Increased speed! Added map downloader!! (not all maps are uploaded to server. I have very very slooow upload speed so it will take around two days since whole america will be ready for download. Rest of world should be)
  • New 'Main menu' (there will be better icons later - these are temporary) - what you think about it? (Accessible by hardware menu button and top left button)
  • new way to work right panel and top panel! Hmm? (try to hold long-click on top panel buttons)
  • improved style of popup dialog

5.7.2011 - Locus 1.9.0
  • release on Android market - Free & Pro

This version of Locus API is deprecated and will not be developed anymore

Check new version on Google Code repository together with How to

Google Code

old text:
Hi,
I have started to work on simple API that allow use some extra Locus features directly without need to create manually some byte array or similar as in previous attempts. So, count that this is just an Beta version, but what it contain:

Locus API, now moved to code.google repository - http://code.google.com/p/android-locus-map/
- if you'll be interested in publishing data here, together with some more info, tell me, otherwise I'll probably place all on code.google.com site

9.12.2011 - VERSION 9
- require Locus 1.15.0 (or at least testing version 1.14.6.6)
1) new "mExtraOnDisplay" callback on Point object. Allow to send only partial data to locus and load them only when needed
2) Intent call 'INTENT_ON_POINT_ACTION' now receive complete point also with GC data!
3) new possibility to send data to locus. Store byte[] on card and send link to Locus by EXTRA_POINTS_FILE_PATH. Sample under button 10
4) some minor improvements on Locus and API side

24.11.2011 - VERSION 8
1) actualized Geocaching attributes and also constructor needs to be used now for creating

21.10.2011 - VERSION 7
1) added support for older intent-filters directly into API
2) added support for new intent-filter - MAIN_FUNCTION that allow add your app directly into list of functions and also to right quick menu

VERSION 5/6
1) added function to import file directly into locus
2) some small refractoring and update of sample

VERSION 4
1) thanks to Arcao, for some Locus check functions (check menion.android.locus.addon.publiclib.LocusUtils file)
2) added boolean value "found" to set if cache is already ... found

VERSION 3
1) some minor changes that fits actual Locus, changed time format in geocaching data

VERSION 2
1) improved sending to Locus, not thanks to ContentProvider so almost unlimited amount of data (limit is around 4MB as I noticed, so more then enough)
2) ability to call intent with parametr "Import to database", which lunch direct import to Locus point database

VERSION 1
1) Ability to send points into Locus. It's similar to this http://forum.asamm.cz/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=34 but much simplier (callback is still supported, but it's named as 'extra')
2) You can send also complete Geocache with all information
3) Sample application contain whole skin for top bars, so you can inspire and create addon with same design as have Locus.

this API is just library you attach to your project. Look at sample and try to run it to see what is and isn't possible now. Comments and discussion are of course welcome.

Other features / Geocaching Features

Good day to all,
what about to add some more support for geocaching? Looks that a lot of users are GC fans so ...

I created yesterday new functionality "Draw circles" where you can define place and radius and it will draw circle on map. Some caches needs to be solved by drawing few circles or distances and intersection is place of some result. So what next? I'm not much experienced with geocache hunt so I need to hear, what other things should be useful. I also do not want to create some "solver" program. For this exist many much better programs. I just want to use map and help with solving cartridges that needs some "drawings" ...

EDIT: so I added also ability to draw lines from point to point. And because setting two places should be hard with actual system, I also created ability to pick point from map ...
