Locus Map / Re: [APP] - version 4.18.+ ( 8/2023 )

Quote from: Menion on August 03, 2023, 08:11:37Hi guys, sharing points from Google Maps does not work for years as I know. Somewhere in 2021 maybe even later, they changed the format and the information app receives can no longer be simply converted to any text or coordinates.

Or you had a different experience with Locus Map 4.16-?
@Menion - strange, different to my experience, it (red push pin) had worked ~4.16, stopped working ~4.17, and is now working again. I only started using GMaps recently as a workaround for the broken LM4 online search experience which I now find frustrating. Sorry to complain, but it's just how it feels.
More or less the same for me. Latest version of Locus did not fix anything here though, I still cannot share points from Google Maps app. All I get is a silly URL in the Locus search window.

It used to work nicely for me for a long time, likely before Locus rewrote the Search function. Or before gmaps app changed the sharing... I have no idea. All I know is that it worked for years and not it doesnt.

I also find the new Locus online search useless. It almost never gets anything I want. When I need a "bike shop", I want a list of shops at the town where my map is pointing at. Locus online search gives me mostly utter nonsense from 500 kilometers away though.

To put it mildly: Usability regarding search has gone completely southwards recently.

Good interaction with Google maps is essential on my trips. I need opening/closing times, I need the websites of stores, I need to streetview the store front to judge wether it makes sense to cycle there and look for something. Locus internal search will never be able to compete... and it should not. Google Maps is the perfect tool for that.

@slarti76 - thanks, hadn't used +codes before. Still slower (many more taps) than direct "share" of a point from my testing:
  • drag POI details down a few times
  • tap on "See all"
  • tap on +code (very little visual feedback BTW)
  • switch back to LM4
  • open Search (maybe side panel button)
  • paste clipboard (maybe more steps here)
Yeah, agreed, but
a) if we don't have another always-working solution,
b) surely no problem with parsing (well-defined as far as I understand)
c) at least last two steps could be improved if Locus adds a PlusCode support by automatically inserting clipboard content in search field (if it parses as PlusCode).
Heck, Locus could parse the clipboard when opening the search and automatically switch to PlusCode if it parses.

Honestly, I'm a little diappointed how the missing ability to correctly share positions from Google is waved away here. Menion et al should be aware that this is an ability that is absolutely crucial for "normal" users. OSM is nice and well, but let's face it, GMaps will always be more up-to-date. Rarely anyone relies on OSM POIs alone, so we all search stuff in GMaps all the time and want to easily enter the points in Locus. This is not something to just say "hasn't been working for a while, so what?"...

You may be interested in my Pluscode<->Latlon converter. Supports both types of Pluscode. Works locally, except Pluscode with city name needs a www lookup.
Intermediate Tasker users will know how to use this function. https://taskernet.com/shares/?user=AS35m8kdDIMDeveQcQfRglam%2Fah1mTW%2FWcg05FZ39c0i1q%2F77iY3E7cIwxCkXqJTaTA%3D&id=Task%3AfGPS_Pluscode

Interesting Najda. I`m sorry, but I can`t help here. What Michael wrote should not work. License check can`t be moved to another device so some backup of restore won`t help.

As I wrote: a check for a license is done at the start at the app and should be done no matter if your device is rooted or not. Fact, that it does work on your rooted device is a mystery to me.

Generally, I have a bad experience with MicroG and if anyone had problems with an app license before, I always wrote the same: "sorry, can`t help here".

Maybe an interesting improvement for Locus user and developers: "DTM Czechia v2" has been released which is based completely on precise LiDAR data.

This is not a mistake. It shows you a nature reserve. If you don't want it then you can disable it in the theme. Borders + special areas.

2 lines consumes too much space again. If so, you should be able to hide them in the menu.
But you could make both buttons in one line. The name Tracks is very short.

Hello guys,
new Beta 4.17.1.3 just generated. I've found also one extra issue in consumption that may happen in the case, in the directory is really a lot of files. I've improved caching so it may help as well.

But I still do not know why with a single 1" you had so high power consumption Michael ...

Hello,
why I missed your previous post > do not know, sorry.

It is really weird because I'm aware of only two situations when track recording may be really paused "magically":

1) new, not yet perfectly working, mentioned "auto-pause" settings
2) app was killed by the system, and later started manually again (after more than 10 minutes after it was killed) and the app automatically pause the previous recording.

Otherwise, it may be paused over the widget, by intent (so over Tasker etc), in the UI (side panel or dashboard). Hmm and this is probably all ...

--

I've anyway just generated a new Beta version for tests so I've added some extra logs related to the start/stop of track recording. If you find a moment, you may try to install it, then long-click on the app main menu button and enable  Setup logging > Log to file.

Then try recording as usual and after the issue happens, so after you notice an accidentally paused track recording, just stop the app and send me a log file from the Locus/logs directory. Info, when (exact time) issue happened may be useful.

Michael, in the test directory, is a Beta version with
- logs
- a little optimized caching of HGT files

Give it a try. If consumption will be the same, please enable "Log to file" and create a small log for me, thanks!

Other features / Re: Online search
May 23, 2023, 11:06:49
Quote from: Andrew Heard on May 22, 2023, 18:47:24or even... have the "Barcelona"(s) in the list BUT only change the zoom if & when that item in the list is tapped?
The app zooms out only to be visible nearest result together with your previous location on map, so even if you have Barcelona in the list the app will not zoom out to it in case there are closer results. So if you get big unexpected zoom outs when fire up text search, we most likely wasn't able to find what you wanted.

Quote from: lor74cas on May 23, 2023, 08:58:55If the search is done from the center of the map or from the GPS position, it is from that point that I would like the distance to be measured.
Search is always "done" from the center of the map. But I agree, it might be confusing when you search when locked on your GPS position and map will automatically move to show you nearest result, thus these distance markers not longer relates to GPS position. Will think about it!

Quote from: michaelbechtold on May 22, 2023, 20:19:22What I do not understand: before the new search system, Locus DID use Google APIs, right?
Ok, I admit that I ignored previous "Google driven" search in my replies more that it is fair, sorry for that. Menion wrote few reasons why we don't want to use it for the future, but the list is even longer including its unreability. But the last thing we want to be your search experience worse than before, so thanks a lot for your feedbacks again. We for sure have some ideas already how to adress some mentioned topics or at least make the issues less of the problem, so keep your fingers crossed!

Android version should make no difference. Anyway, the app currently loads HGT files into memory and then computes elevation from these in-memory files. I have a suspicion, that aggressive memory management force app to discard these loaded files and app then has to re-load them again ... and again. So I've added some logs into the app to see, how often app re-loads these files from disk. The beta will be published, hmm hopefully tomorrow ...

Thanks for the log Michael. Unfortunately, I see nothing useful inside ...

Will have to try on another device next few days because on my main Pixel5, no problem as I wrote before. Still, no idea why this should happen ...

Btw. you are using 1" files from Sonny from here right https://sonny.4lima.de > Germany DTM 1" ?

EDIT: I've added some more log messages into the app, so in the next Beta version, "Log to file" may produce some more info. I have one idea what may cause it so want to try.
