Wishlist / Refreshing cache of online maps
March 25, 2012, 20:12:09
Hi

I'm using Locus for a while right now and I collected quite a lot of tiles during this time. Since some of the tiles are quite old, I realize, that many of them are out of date. This is easy to say, because old and new tiles have a different design and some details are missing.

Now I'd like to refresh selected tiles. Of cause I could delete the whole cache, but this would mean reloading *all* of them. This is of course no good idea - thinking of the map providers...

So I suggest implementing one or more of the following options:

1. Adding a setting "Maximum age of tiles (days)" with default = 365 and also an option "never". Tiles that are older then the number of days given here would be refreshed with the online version (if possible), others would be taken from the cache.
2. A checkbox somewhere on the download tab of the map manager: "Overwrite existing tiles".
3. The download manager could obey the previously mentioned "Maximum age..." setting alternatively.
4. A possibility to refresh the current view with the online version  - something like a function "Update current view with online tiles".
5. Replacing the current (binary) setting "Offline Mode" in "Settings / Map / Extended settings" by a dropdown box with three values:
    - "Offline mode"
    - "Online - use saved offline tiles if available. Use online tiles otherwise" (This would load tiles only if they are missing - like today)
    - "Online - use online tiles if internet is availabe. Use offline tiles otherwise" (This would always load tiles, but allow using maps when internet is not availabe. Suitable for flatrate users...)

I' prefer a combination of options one and three if possible

Hi

Today I made a long geocaching trip and first time used geocaching4locus to post a lot of field notes (founds) to the cache logs. I expected, that this notes will be written immediately to geocaching.com. But when I arrived at home I realized that not a single note arrived at the logs on geocaching.com! All notes where still displayed as field notes in locus, but are missing in the logs on both: the add on and the website of geoacaching.com.

So I wonder: Is the geocaching4locus add-on able to write back online notes to the cache logs of geocaching.com?
If no: Ok, would be a nice feature, which should be added. :-)
If yes: Seems as if some bug prevents me from using this feature.

I had no error messages, and I have entered the correct user name and password (I used geocaching4locus to download the caches).
Any help is appreciated...

Hi

When recording tracks and showing track information, locus sums up all uphill and downhill movements and displays them as total sums. However, theese calculated heights are way too heigh compared to reality. In fact, they are displayed numbers are between double and triple as heigh as in reality.
Today I made a trip, and locus reports a total uphill and downhill height of 2260m. My barometric altimeter says 1250m, which is realistic.
I had another trip where the difference was close to factor three!

To check, what's going on, I exported the track taken today to gpx and imported it to google earth and told google earth to correct the heights to ground. Google reports a to total uphill height of 1221m - which is close to the barometric measurement. The displayed height profile is more or less smooth.

Then I imported the track to google earth without correcting heights. Now I see a wild up and down in the height profile. This explains the enormous deviation. Obviously the heights of the GPS device are not very precise.

So I suggest to implement in Locus some kind of smoothing or averaging. Without smoothing the measured heights are not usable at all.

Hi

I have an issue with geocaching4locus. As soon as I disable one of the checkboxes "Funde zeigen" ("Show found caches") or "Zeige versteckte" ("Show caches hidden by your own") geocaching4locus fails with an exception after pressing the button "search and show in Locus":

  Error while downloading data (IOException)
  Exception: GeocachingApiException
  File: LiveGeocachingApi.jave
  Line: 287

I'm using the newest Market version.
It took me some time to find out that this exception is related to the two checkboxes. Since I know this now, I can set the checkboxes accordingly. But maybe you can have a look at this and fix this. I like this tool very much and would like it even more, if I could hide "unimportand" caches.

Thanks

Hi

I have a large online map of 1,5 GByte size.

Now each time I start locus, I receive a Question, if I want to delete this map, since there are Problems with files larger than 2 GByte. I know about this problems and understand that there is currently no way to bypass it. However, this map is far away from 2GByte - there is still about 500MB of space left. So I certainly do not want to delete this map.

Unfortunately locus asks this question each time it starts. This is quite annoying and I fear the time when I accidentally hit the "delete" button

So why is this question coming up, even if there is more than half a GByte space left?
Is there a way to suppress this question, until I *really* run in trouble because the map becomes too large?

And, by the way, If I really will be forced to delete some tiles somewhen in the future, I would prefer to delete the *NEWEST* files. Is there a chance to add an option to *KEEP* the files older than a given number of days?

Thanks
