Thank you for the new version, hillshading looks better now, not so exrtremly dark.
One question, at least with Android 6 I can´t prevent lockscreen, have always to  unlock. Yesterday it worked fine.

Hi,

I have a problem with Locus Pro 3.16.0 and the GC Offlinizer.

I. e. I have downloaded all pictures for a geocache via the Live API of GC Offlinizer (for example GC4ZD65).
But only the headlines are visible on the "BILDER" tab of that geocache not the pictures itself below the headlines!?!?.
Opening the created images.html file of GC Offlinizer in the /Locus/data/geocaching/5/6/GC4ZD65 folder on the internal sd card via firefox works as expected!?!? So the pictures are there but not shown within Locus.
Same issue happens on the "LISTING" tab or on the "SPOILER" tab if they contain valid links to pictures stored local on my device!?!?

Until Locus Pro Version 3.15.3 everything worked as expected.

Hi menion,
thanks for new version
- speed of loading tiles is ok for me now :)

sorry, but problem with non shaded area after enabeled/disabeled shading  exist furthermore on my device and on VM
see screencapture from VM
- shading is enabeled, zoom in /out ZL 9-13 works fine up to 1.25
- at 1.30 i disable shading, zoom in, tiles are not shaded :)
- at 2.05 i enable shading again, ZL 9-12 tiles are not shaded :-[ ZL13 tiles are shaded

from now this area of map is infected, i never get shaded tiles from ZL 9-12 in this area

if i move map to another region (complete new tiles) with enabeled map shading i get shaded tiles from ZL9-13 :) till i disable mapshading once. :-\

Hi, I see colouring mode has changed and not displayed as expected.
I observe on altitude change mode (other modes not examined)
In Locus 3.15.3 the steepest track segment was painted clearly red, the sinkest track segment was painted clearly blue.
In Locus 3.16.0 almost all the track is painted in green colour, some but not all track segments are painted in red (ascending), another segment painted in orange (descending(!)), the rest is green. No blue-tinted segments at all (!). In short the colouring key is confusing for me I don't  see any sense how the colour is applied on different segments. It looks like bug to me.

for comparison same track viewed in Locus 3.15.3 (using same colouring mode)

Yes, I'd noted that the sun seems to come from the North, which may be OK in the southern hemisphere but is odd in Europe.

Hello Willy
I think that's how it works.
To compare with google maps terrain:

I have same experience as Bucky Kid. For track line style Mode = "Change of elevation" my steep test track is now mostly green, and therefore quite unusable. My test track is very steep for tour cycling and has gradients above 8%.

track in 3.15 (useful coloring):

<<add: (PRO) auto-start of track recording now has cancelable counter at start of app>>

Wow - thank you, great addition. I note again previously discussed and improved - http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/if-there-are-no-recorded-points-is-it-necessary-to-ask-to-save-the-stop-the-process (http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/if-there-are-no-recorded-points-is-it-necessary-to-ask-to-save-the-stop-the-process)]) that if there are no recorded track points, at Locus exit there is again unnecessary message box - ""Do you really want to EXIT?". Suggestion - no need to confirm exit while track recording IF no recorded track points.

@jusc: lock screen: there were some discussion about it. In latest version, Locus is able to disable only non-secured locks screens. So if you use some code, pattern to unlock, it won't work. Reason was that previously I've used small hack that unfortunately don't work on all devices correctly, so I've rather disabled it and now it's used only standard recommended method.

@c.s.g.: really really interesting. Same happen with other caches as well? What about when you close/open Locus again? What when you remove and add cache again? Can't now imagine, what this may cause, hmm :/

@balloni5: thanks balloni, I see an issue now. Damn caching of vector maps. I try to make them as fast as possible, but this caching at low zoom levels complicates me work a lot. I'll fix it to next version, where this caching will be completely disabled in case, shading is enabled, thanks

@Diddi: hmm, not sure I've changed something, but glad to hear. Small improvements here and there and well .. :)

@0709, @john_percy: as gynta posted screenshot from other maps - shading is done mainly for visual appearance and it just looks better, I think that's all. So sun comes from north-west, well .. :). Or is there any other reason?

You are not alone, but
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrain_cartography
QuoteShaded relief, or hill-shading, simulates the cast shadow thrown upon a raised relief map, or more abstractly upon the planetary surface represented. The shadows normally follow the English convention of top-left lighting in which the light source is placed near the upper-left corner of the map. If the map is oriented with north at the top, the result is that the light appears to come from the north-west. Many people have pointed out that this is unrealistic for maps of the northern hemisphere, because the sun does not shine from that direction, and they have proposed using southern lighting. However, the normal convention is followed to avoid multistable perception illusions (i.e. crater/hill confusion)

Photo above is real photo or screenshot from Locus? Just kidding, enjoy vacation!

Push from You all was too hard, so I had to spend weekend on it and you may see result (in speed). I was able to reduce rendering from around 200ms per 512x512 tile to almost 50ms per tile without obvious loss of quality. So I believe that even without caching, it's perfectly usable now. "Slope shading" is little bit slower still thought.

Hmm it's really nice view on hills covered with snow, damn, have to get out from our flat for a while :)

Hi Menion,

problem still exists with all geocaches which have links to pictures on the "LISTING", "SPOILER" or "BILDER" tab.

What have I done so far ...
(1.) ... Import the caches again in Locus.
(2.) ... Reboot my device (Samsung Galaxy S4 running Android 5.0.1 stock rom)
(3.) ... opening the html files via firefox shows the headline and pictures!?!?

What might cause the problem:
As far as I know you fixed a problem with a markdown issue in the listing tab (see here (http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/display-error-in-the-listing-missing) or here (http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=4996.0)). Maybe this bugfix causes the troubles with the broken link to the pictures in "LISTING", "SPOILER" or "BILDER" tab ... just a gues.

Uff, I'm unable to simulate any problem. May you please do for me two things:
- backup of your settings over Backup manager
- pack to zip directory with cache from data/geocaching/...

and send me them. I'll try to simulate it with these two packs. Hope it helps ... thanks

@Christian: no need to be sorry. Mainly thanks to this "pushing", I made is as fast as is now ;)

@gynta: interesting, Free, Pro, both works correctly without serious problems. I happen to me as well a long time ago, but I hoped it is already fixed. What about rotate of screen? And problem is most probably not in incorrect direction, but in one-step-behind :).

Remark re. Tracking Points: currently the info box shows only distance and elevation. The latter is pretty much useless in that context. Speed (and pot. direction) are relevant instead, but not visible at first glance.

The hillshading speed increase compared to last beta is quite amazing indeed... good job! Almost makes me delete my pre-rendered offline relief maps again. Only "almost" though, because they still feel snappier... and are configurable in darkness... and can be used together with slope coloring... and dont disappear at zoom >=18.

Is there any technical reason to not shade higher zooms? It might not matter much for hill shading... but disappearing slope coloring strikes me as outright dangerous. When a >35 degree red slope suddenly turns green (original mapsforge render color) just because I am viewing it up close, I might be lured into making a bad decision by accident.

@Carsten: check dialog where you enable/disable shading for maps in settings > maps - advanced

@joeloc: there is currently no reason for these limits. Previous version of shading was really bad in high zoom levels, because of this was disabled. It's a lot better now, so in the end, I may enable it without any limits if there will be "global agree". I think, why not. And arguments with "bad decision" - understand, good point.

I have just returned from a long-distance march and (unfortunately) I must say that Locus 3.16.0 (my phone has upgraded to this week) brings three very unpleasant issues for my phone (see my signature) :(

1) Locus does not block phone locking any more (!!!) even if it is demanded in the settings the same way it had been before.
This is really a pain in a.. when I have to unlock my display every time I take my phone out of my pocket !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is really so crucial for me that should not this be repaired soon I seriously consider reverting to the previous version of Locus (? how).

2) When I guide to a wpt (e.g. a geocache) there are two (!!!) same red arrows in the new compass screen - one is correct and the other (just confusing me and making me really angry) always heading to the north !
It might have something in common with the fact that I mostly use an external bluetooth module ?!

3) The plugin "Geocaching for Locus" makes Locus often freeze (however not always) since the update  :(
However, it does not seem to be the geocache download itself that makes Locus freeze. It freezes in the dialog after geocaches are downloaded asking how to solve the clash with existing geocaches in the folder.

Sorry to say that but no sigle Locus update in the past had ever brought me so much trouble it did this time ...

Due to my job obligations (unatended phone could be abused by a person to connect to company data) I MUST NOT switch off the phone lock. That's why it is essential for me that Locus itself can trick it when on.

This happenned to me twice in 3.16.0 when importing geocaches which had already been in the folder and it made Locus crash. However, I have experienced a few similar imports where this did not happen too.

V 3.16.0.4
colored icon for live tracking looks nice :)
if i start tracking without satfix, the icon is also green, this is missleading, orange will be better in this case i think

if i use an icon in my tracking profil which is not standard inside locus, other user don´t see it and it´s useless.
Is it possible to allow only standard locus icons in tracking profil?

1) I have repeated the geocache imports many times and on my phone it crashes in about one of ten repetitions in 3.16.0.
2) I wanted to create the log for you, I followed

When Locus crashes, the dialog "Aplikace Locus Map Pro nereaguje. Počkat/Hlášení/OK" is displayed. Should I try to create the log in this moment (but it seems it is modal and I cannot go to the Developer Options at the moment) or which of the options should I take ? I guess "Hlášení" is a different log than you need, isn't it "? When I choose OK and go to Developer options then, "Take bug report" doesn't create anything :-(

Regarding the future of hill shading and slope coloring... menion... maybe this is of interest for you:
http://webgl.uni-hd.de/realtime-WebGIS/index.html

It does realtime shading/coloring in the browser from DEM data, adjustable light angle and everything. Speed is realtime indeed, since everything is done by the GPU. Algorithm is in WebGL (view source). I believe it could be more or less used verbatim in a future OpenGL-Locus.

Speed is 50 fps for a 1024x1024 grid on my Android phone... around 16(?) Locus tiles in 20ms... roughly 40(!) times the speed of current Locus algorithm. And it keeps the CPU free for parallel mapsforge rendering. OpenGL-Locus wouldn't just be "a bit faster", it would be a game changer... :-).

Caching of vector maps in Locus 3.16.0.4:
Zoom to level 13 works very well  :D
Zoom from level 14 is not working  :(

with shading works absolutely no caching  :(

if it always like zoom level 13 and then work with shading would would be an enormous progress in Locus.

Hi, just played a bit with LiveTracking and stumbled again over the mess with map switching and world overview maps.
Just have a look below:
(http://s11.postimg.org/a7rj5xtvz/2016_03_27_11_30_33.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/a7rj5xtvz/)
Auto Load, Any Type is activated, BTW.

My take: the upper part comes from current map (which does not switch to Slovakia or Hungary), the middle part comes from cache, and the missing bottom part is comes from screwed up algorithm.

Besides fixing the Auto Load, for non-Auto-Load, I propose to use (a scaled) up world map, for the areas outside the current map.

And again I revert to the world map topic: every GIS/map professional on this planet knows that for zoom levels 9 and smaller, image tiles are the appropriate way. Except 2 persons :-((

PLEASE, Menion, give us 1-2 hours of your time and allow for configurable world background map (path, zoom level to switch). Petr is not bored anyway, as he fights a USEFUL battle with address search etc. (rather than trying to compete with his special vector maps on world level, which has been a lost battle from start)

On the Autoload issue I mentioned, I screwed up - forgot the second checkbox needed for this feature. My bad.

Re. the hours: you have all basic features needed for this at hand already:
1) you already have the code working to make the switch away from the selected vector map (today you switch to the crappy 10 MB world map)
2) you have the code to switch maps (e.g. in smart / quick map switch)
3) you have the code to deal with sqlite based maps

The only little thing is another set of parameters.I guess people would not bother to have that feature in config.cfg. Such I had in mind when talking about 1-2 hours. Adding the feature with fancy UI is more cumbersome, I agree.

Now, besides the easy config read from file, the only new code is an "IF" at position from 1).
If there is a SQLite world file path defined, then use it, otherwise continue like before.
Well, the trigger to "ask"1) "IF" would not be level 8 fixed, but the value from config.cfg instead.

Did I miss something ?

"sigh" ... world vector map is hardcoded to be used with V3 version of vector maps. Change to something more flexible is not so easy as it were never planned to work in different way

Well, understand, but there is an "IF" today, when you are in a vector map, and reach zoom level 8.
This is exactly the place to put the existing "hard coded" map into one brnach, and the switch to the sqlite map into the "else", as described below ...

Colored icon was discussed here: http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/live-tracking-add-color-to-main-screen-button-to-indicate-status . I'm anyway not convinced as I consider green/white color as enabled/disabled .

About icons - I was thinking about it before release. But because I would like to invest more time to live tracking next or nextnext week, I'll do it at once. So in next bigger version, it should be improved, thanks for a good point!

I shortly tested bugfixing version today. Tracks colouring seems to work perfect now. However the optical zoom when switching between raster maps of significantly different layer is still too high. Is the max optical zoom limit still planned? I know it's a cosmetic issue only.

Menion, I stumbled across something: when a KML or similar file is not well formed at the end (cut), Locus goes into an endless loop.
I propose that after an EOF condition Locus closes all logical "brackets" in the file and it completes the import up to the last complete structure before EOF point.

Someone recently asked in one post how to efficiently load HGT files onto the phone.
Well, you can download via PC, then copy - or use one of the KML files I created today. Two for now, the rest to come, incl. the XLS I built to create those KMLs.
Those KMLs include points at 1 degree coordinates for any 1' square that contains some land, i.e. pure ocean areas are spared.
Enjoy.

next unclear state for me:
if i lost satfix or disable GPS the "track icons" of other tracking users are furthermore visible on map on last refreched position.
So again i vote for an other color state in track icon, or a refrech of screen to clear track icons on map if device has no satfix, or GPS is switched off.

This afternoon i watched you on your track trip  ;)
i´ve activated from label "menion"/right arrow/ guide on

Disagreed. I know that problem and thought about it, too, but I'd be more annoyed when the zoom level automatically changes because I switch to a map that doesn't have this level. It's especially annoying when "fine-editing" a track.

@michaelbechtold - I am unclear of trade-off between your special KML and ordinary HGT files? Is purpose just to drastically reduce the number of files? Is there speed advantage? Where should KML file be placed and/or Locus configured to use? I tried replacing all HGT files with single KML file but then hill shading no longer worked. Someone has complained that forcing download of HGTs from Locus itself requires a lot of manual zig-zag track creation, to trigger the downloads via "fill elevation". Those KMLs create points at each 1' for the "continents". Then you go to the folder, make those you want visible/selected, and fill elevation, so you get the HGTs :-)
The selection can be eased by placing the cursor in the middle of the country/region, sort by distance, then select first x points. Not ideal. Of course I'd love a ribbon selection of points on the map :-)

This is totally counter intuitive for me... because PLAY is basically the exact opposite of RECORD ever since the invention of cassette players. Just cosmetics obviously... and maybe it's just me...

More or less... the icon seemed so unlikely out of place that I basically thought it was a leftover april fools joke or some such :-).

A record icon has been a (red) circle since the beginning of time:
https://www.google.de/search?q=record+icon&tbm=isch

A play icon has been a triangle since the beginning of time:
https://www.google.de/search?q=play+icon&tbm=isch

But hey... if it works for your users... by all means... never mind. There are by far more important construction sites in Locus.

Just started testing the new beta.
Impressed with the speed of hill shading at level 10 and higher. Congrats,  Menion!
Two issues, older,  but still existing in this beta:

1) quick map switch is still broken. In general, but this scenario should make it very clear. Both automatic map switch options being active,  selected map is Austria. Moving over Slovenia into the Balkans. Maps switch nicely without me noticing. Great. Going to quick map switch, the map shown is nowhere in the list, though.

2) rendering still mixes different map parts and tiles from different themes. Attached is only one example.

3) meanwhile numerous times recording screwed up.
After kms of recording, pressing the red stop button immediately Deleted the track!

Menion figured out a really good algorithm for CPUs. But have you tried http://webgl.uni-hd.de/realtime-WebGIS/index.html (on your phone) to be *really* impressed? :-)

Anyway, I wanted to confirm the "messy tiles" problem, I also have that regularly.

Also, the latest PRO and all following BETAs force-quit on me silently during track recording about 2-3 times per day. I cannot really figure out when and how that happens, because my phone is safely tucked away. But it's pretty annoying when you take it out after an hour and notice that Locus is actually no longer running and nothing was recorded.

That's a serious problem that even can turn into a life threatening situation. I really wish Locus would offer some kind of POSITIVE audio feedback... like a configurable beep for every recorded point... configurable voice strings (like "altitude %d" whenever you cross a 100m mark... etcpp.

NEGATIVE feedback (ie beeping on errors) will never be sufficient.

Hello guys,

new 3.16.2 version on Google Play.

@michaelbechtold: multilanguage MapsForge maps - if they do not work, it's possible that format also changed? Well, in this case, I cannot help for now.

@gynta: icon for Live tracking should be fixed in 3.16.2, thanks

@balloni55: and are icons clickable? For me it looks like just icons rendered by vector map theme itself, not loaded from Locus Poi Db. About removed support for 4.0.0-2 devices. You really have a device with this Android? Because there should be less then 0.1 percent of such devices ( http://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/index.html )

- problems with messed tiles from map themes - weird. Thanks, have to test it more as this not happen to me now

@joeloc: 2-3 times per day?? There have to be some change in your device. You are only one who write something like this about latest versions. Hmm

Disable "track edit mode" (tap on map outside of track), then you will be able to delete track. This is prevention to accidental deletion.

Ah I see now. If I change Tap on track to Popup window, I can delete/hide the track instantly, but I don't get instantly the bottom control toolbar for track manipulation on the other side (need extra taps).
Question, is disabling track hiding in edit on map mode reasonable when there aren't any unsaved changes made to track?
Entering Edit on map mode self doesn't modify the track so in my opinion it still can be deleted/hidden.
Disabling hide has sense only inside "Insert/edit trackpoint" or "Delete part of track" modes. Only one inconsistency I have noticed with previous behaviour was edit control toolbar not auto closing after deleting or hiding the track.

I personally had a negative experience with few times hidden track by accident (no confirmation) and one deletion of important track because I thought I delete a trackpoint. So it is not a major problem, I would like to keep system as is. Small protection against hiding/deleting of track, when you work with it.

Changing the order of the buttons in top panel works only until I close the app. After a restart it has the old position.

That's what I did:
Settings -> Map - control & panels -> Set functions panels -> move maps button to the first position

Hm no problem here on all devices.

some questions:
Locus version?
Android version?
special mode (CM)?
Locus is stored internal or on external sd?

best place for problem report is here: http://help.locusmap.eu/topic/add/problem/?text=Put%20your%20problem%20HERE

The changed buttons are in the right sort order, if I use the close button on my phone and start it again. But when I switch Locus in the background and swipe to the left or right, Locus will be closed too. In this case, the sort order is gone. I just tried it on 2 different phones, with the same result.

Using Locus 3.16.2 with Elevate theme on Android 5.1.1 all maps are on external SD card.

Steffen

Hello, such "close" of app is more like minimizing then a closing. Because of this, Locus did not correctly remembered it's state of panels. I'm improved it so this "issue" should be fixed in next version, thank syni. And please next time, such crucial information (like how to simulate this problem), write immediately into first bug report (best as gynta mentioned - on help.locusmap.eu), thanks. Thanks gynta too!

What can I do ?

TXs for new version, ML file accepted now. However, no idea (yet) how to switch between languages.

Also the V3 themes are not offered, which is not logical at all, because the mapsforge library you employ fully understands them ...

Hello,
- selection of languages is currently in detail of vector map (map manager > offline > selected map three dot menu > information

- version of theme is defined in first tag of theme XML file. Check "version=" value. Should be 4. And it is possible that MapsForge 0.5+ loads also older themes, but I need to keep it seperate, so as I wrote already few times - V4 maps + V4 themes. Thanks for understanding.

V 3.16.2.7 report from my first tests with multilingual V4 maps,
i use germany and swiss map with rendertheme-v4

- map icon im "Maps" is V2, but map is V4
(http://s31.postimg.org/q6wtb7rif/Karte.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/q6wtb7rif/)

- in ZL´s < 10 loading map is very slow
- POI icons, no popup label, not clickable ?!
- on first zoom to ZL 17 all POI icons are well displayed, zoom in or out and back to ZL 17 some icons are cut.
(http://s31.postimg.org/d13zj9afb/ICON.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/d13zj9afb/)

- autoloading map didn´t work
- in the area of country border color of lake is white and not blue e.g. Bodensee/Lake Constance or Genfer See
- name of lake isn´t displayed
(http://s31.postimg.org/fek34rt3b/Bodensee.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/fek34rt3b/)

- multilingual town names
e.g.
en/de/fr/es > Konstanz/Konstanz/Constance/Constanca visible ZL14-ZL22
en/de/fr/es > Munich/München/Munich/Múnich visible ZL6-ZL9 always, ZL11+12 brocken word

Question:
what should multilingual map display? - names of towns, POI´s ??

Quote from: balloni55- autoloading map didn´t work

In this (http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=4311.120) topic, I found in reply #122:
Quote from: Menion- current unmodified version of MapsForge library (currently version 0.6, maps V4) that will work only with map themes version 4, no autoloading, no POI Db
So if I  understand Menion right he is using an original MapsForge library for the "new" V4 maps and themes and this library does not offer an autoloading feature of the maps by default.

Locus versions of Elevate 3 are version=1 and locus-extended=1 (see <rendertheme> tag). They can only be used with Locus 0.3 mapsforge fork . Standard versions of Elevate 3 are version=4, only those can be used with ML maps.

The lake isn't probably completely contained in the maps (as country borders cut it), and if a border of an area isn't closed, it's not treated by the rendering engine as as an area - so no color and no names.

Every OSM name tag which has not just "name=*" (local name), but also "name:XX=*" can be seen, see here (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Names#Localization).
E.g. "name=München" has "name:EN=Munich", so if you choose standard language, "München" is displayed, if you choose english, "Munich" is displayed. For every name that has no "name:EN=*", the standard/local name is displayed.
It's not limited to towns, but this is the most likely usage.

ok understand, but.....
e.g. area of North Sea and Baltic Sea are blue, where is there the border for rendering?

That's a bit OT: If there is a sea/coast in a map, sea is treated differently - it's rendered below the land area as blue rectangle (that's the border for rendering), then the land area is rendered according to coastline/map boarders on top of sea. On the land area, everything else is is rendered, like lakes etc. Usually the sea and land areas are prepared once for proper rendering and are not updated anymore from current OSM data.

Thanks Tobias for a precise answers!

Hope all is clear now. Balloni and others: what is currently in Locus is full MapsForge 0.6 library that is automatically used for all V4 maps. Because I need strictly distinct what will be used with internal modified library and what with this new, it's really required to use V4 maps and V4 themes. This won't change soon, but I do not think it's a big problem as it's just a number in header.

Some extra features of MapsForge 0.6+ are currently not planned. Poor performance is not a problem in Locus I believe. I've compared rendering of V4 maps in Orux and they are quite same ... and quite slower that modified lib.

Color mode is cute :-)
Menu titles should be changed, though:
Map shading -> Map shading and color
Map color mode -> Map contrast mode
Also not perfect, but nearer to what Locus does, I suppose

It works a bit like an overlay, in fact Color mode is XOR overlay. Hence it should be doable to inherit the opaque mechanics from overlays, as colors can be pretty brutal and hiding other information.

@Andrew Heard: yes, like tap on spanner + selecting item. Not a big feature, it may just be more logical to someone and maybe easier to use in the field (big line over display, mainly tracks vs small icon in corner)

Offline addresses - perfect.

@Menion - regards long tap - it was a little bit confusing to me because the operations long bottom affected  not just the "long tapped" point or track, but also any other item that was current enabled. If I tap the spanner then operations long bottom affect all enabled items (obvious), but I think more intuitive and useful feature that long tapped single item + operation should only affect that item, and ignore other enabled items.

and offline address search - I was too quick to respond, not all positive but will reply in more detail in "offline addresses" forum topic.

yep. It really just preselect tha ONE item you long clicked. Nothing more and it won't have effect on visibility/selection of other items. So in case, you have visible a lot of points/tracks on a map, but wants just select two of them, you had:

previously: tap on bottom button, in top toolbar tap "selection button" > deselect all and then tap on wanted two items
now: long click on first item, then select also second item

Hmm sounds good. Thanks for help.

That new feature with the long tap sounds great - always missed something like that.
Which reminds me of another tiny idea I was had but forgot:
In the tracks list, when you tap the icon (track overview), you're taken directly to the map showing the track completely. Wouldn't it make sense to do something similar with a point? Tapping the point icon, doesn't open the point details (like the rest of the line), but enables that point and takes you to the map centered on the point.
Would be more consistent, don't you think?

Hi Menion,
easy and organized access to important information is a good principle. Hence I like the approach.
Now to the details:
- Panoramio access us a great idea. However, slider is needed to control the amount images displayed on top of the map. Currently at popular places, the map completely disappears.
- Quick map switch has fastest possible access,    directly from the map. So no need to hide it one step further away.
- Map themes:  same
- POIs: even further away from instant access.
I believe that the panel construct you have is powerful and gives the user all (s)he needs.
Direct access from screen, grouping as the user wants it (by the reordering feature).
With the addition of more Features, though, you might want to offer a panel on the left.
It should be the home of the map theme, quick map switch and the recording, of course. And the size should be like current quick map switch. Not like the spacy blue buttons today.
Cheers
Michael

Hi menion,
interesting news in new BETA ;)

- additional to Michaels suggestion on Panoraminio, please add a optional checkbox only with wifi.

- using vectormaps the old theme button is furthermore available

- maps (kml/kmz) from items are not displayed as overlay on map althought name and opacity slider is visible
in "T:Map Item browser"

Overlay Geotagged photo:
- displayed "created date" in  photo details is current date and not date photo was created/shot
- inside photo details it would be helpfull to have a "back link" or "folder name" to folder where this photo is stored.
- if i add e.g. two "folder links" to folders with geotagged photos inside, all geotagged photos from both folders are displayed on map althought i havn´t activated (red folder name) one of them.

For me only photos from activated (red) folders should be displayed.
- multiselect of "folder links" should be also possible.

- if i delete one "folder link", photos of this folder are furthermore visible on map (no refrech) till next off/on "Geotagged photo"

Photo icon preview in item list is very small and difficult to identify, i think there is enough space to to enlarge them ;)

This slide panel only annoys - you need more clicks for the same thing. Same with the search, BTW, as discussed in other thread.
The "more functions" menu is the right place to sort functions by category, e.g. "Map content". And let the users decide which subset of them is relevant, and let the users place them on the screen via the panel mechanics that does successfully work.
As there are more functions coming, giving the users more space on the left side is an option.

can the user hide the new left side panel? I already have access to required functions from quick settings and main settings screens so don't see why any new functions can't use same mechanism?

The off line search UI is better again but have now noticed a map long tap sometimes shows an address label for a street that is offset from tapped position? never seen this before

Just expect, that I would like to replace with this panel all side buttons on left side. There is no plan to create something similar to "right functions panel" also on a left side. Anyway no need to discuss this now, as I have no improvement in head already, how to allow define quick access to certain left sliding screens. Thanks for now.

Hello,

@balloni: quite a lot of tasks around "GeoTagged photos". Unfortunately it's not so simple for me to do something with this. All these points on a map are just common points with attached photo, nothing more. I've at least for now, fixed refresh when one directory was removed from a list.

Btw. you wrote also something about "selected item in list of directories" etc ( "For me only photos from activated (red) folders should be displayed." ) ... but there is nothing like activated item. All directories you setup in list of "monitored directories" are visible at once. There is no option to temporary enable/disable some of them.

@gynta: separator added between news, thanks. Requests on help desk are not needed now. All is just in creating/testing phase and will be published in 3.18.0 version, not sooner. So enough time. I have to think more carefully what to add to "Overlays" panel and what not. Don't want to create some huge huge list with need to settings "what display and what not".

@michaelbechtold, @Andrew. well idea is that side panel fully substitude all small buttons that are currently on left side together with "Quick map switch". I have anyway today did a small settings that allows to choose, which item will be then visible on side as a "quick button". All clear from screenshot hope - see, at top is selected what should be on the side of panel and at bottom are semitransparent visible buttons. Simple ... well? :)

Latest Beta is a mess!

Quick map switch before: One click on the screen and you select
Now: click the blue icon. Oh, what's that ? There is no map select, not even a choice to get there, but a list of themes (because that is what I did last time here). OK, we go back, then select Quick Map Switch
Imagine what happens when you want to switch Map themes now: same mess, the other way round !

PLEASE stop academic over-engineering, i.e. avoid confusing and diverting users.
Every Locus version from the last year is better re. UI than what is happening now.

Caught me, Menion :-) I did not play with this config button, sorry ...

Now those blueish button come. Quick map switch does the same - but takes twice the space now. I do not see the progress here.

"Nearest points" function could be interesting. As it seems, though, as if only visible POIs are displayed. Those I see myself on the map ...
The more interesting ones are those that are hidden. Or you might allow the user to make a choice here.

The very latest Beta from today has a Settings button on the upper blue bar, right hand side there.

@Menion
Seriously, those new beasts are oversized by 100%.
And once right-sized, they need to disappear as a default. Like with panels the USER decides if they should be visible all the time. If hidden, slide from left, or double tap can bring them to surface. And the current menu activation by slide from left can just become part of the list of the new buttons. And you will have plenty of space on the left panel, once they have an appropriate size.

problem with transparency  of map item overlay
example:
- with PRO i set transparency of map item to 50%
- next i open Beta, map item is displayed with transparency 50% :)
- if i change transparency once between 0-99%, map item transparency is always set to 0% (invisible), only 100 % are possible to set with BETA.

Sure I did that. Then I see the last one I used. In earlier versions you could simply go to Select and use another one. This is gone. Instead I have two layer panels showing the same,  while the master layer panel is gone. Can anybody explain the benefit of those new panels ?? Map space: reduced and spoit. Ease and effectiveness of use: history. The functions Menion has added are cool. The way they are organized and accessible is a disaster.  Conceptually and practically.

The missing selection of Overlay Maps, the double/missing item in the panel array - granted. I am happy to report those flaws without emotions.
The problem is: even if there were zero errors, the usability is down the toilet, because the concept sucks.
As I said: very useful new functions, but totally convoluted UI concept.

Nice bunch of comments, thanks :)

@gynta: POI on/off works. What you see on a map is considered to be a custom selection of permanently visible points on a map. I here just disable extra clickable points placed over points in map itself. I mean points you see on a vector map! just when you move. So better name should be something like "Active points in vector map".

@0709: nice image. Double information at top are probably caused by some overinformating of your overcustomized GPX/TCX files, isn't it?

Moving panels before dashboard after double tap is unfortunately technically not possible. Order of panels & dashboard needs to be now defined in app by default. Better to setup resize of dashboard by bottom panel, this should solve it.

@balloni55: problem with transparency - thanks, it's possible. I've improved these transparency sliders so this may cause any issue, consider it as fixed. Issue #149 - just ignore "T:" values ... I've not yet decided what text use, so I use own temporary texts that are not published on crowdin. Surprise you do not know yet after all these years :).

@michaelbechtold: to select overlay, you first needs to remove previous. Are there really needed two buttons - change, remove? Isn't this one enough? About which "same panels" you told? Screen is exactly same instead of two buttons add, delete, there is just one now and one toggle button that allows to disable overlay without need to remove map first. Rest remains same. Easy and effectiveness is history?? Well, your opinion. I see no difference in "Map Overlay" function except mentioned buttons. And side panel? I see no difference in usage of Locus thanks to new side panel either. You still may place required quickly accessible "map switch" and "map themes" on a side like before.

Oki, so few more questions on you (please, short, clear answers):
- "double/missing item i the panel array" - what you are talking about?
- "usability" - what is a problem here as no usability is lost. I still do not understand a problem here, at least I do not see it.

gynta wrote that is is a Beta - correct. But to be true, I'm quite satisfied with solution of "Map content" panel. Only major change wants to do, is moving of "Db POI" screen here also and opening main screen always (so do not remember last visible panel). Anyway discussion and opinions are more then welcome, but please - constructive. We have a deal with Petr who critics almost everything I do - "critics is possible, but always bring at least one better solution".

@gynta: I think that problem is more on my side, how I decided to do this function. I understand what you expect, but for now ... consider colored bigger points placed on map with "eye" button as separate temporary points. Button that turn on/off POI db really works just on automatically loaded points from database.

And overlay .. ah thanks, I've forget. For my own surprise, I'm unable to simulate it. May you please create a log for me? Thank you!

@0709: heh. In your case, I never know if you use some basic GPX or some highly customized GPX file :). Attach me here please your file, because if there is no custom Locus tags, I'm surprised you see such texts at top of screen. Thanks

It's be a long and heavy working day ... now let me go through your comments and questions:

Quote from: menion on May 12, 2016, 08:40:39
@michaelbechtold: to select overlay, you first needs to remove previous. Are there really needed two buttons - change, remove? Isn't this one enough?
MBe: I did not try remove, because I could not trust I get overlay back :-) Now I tried via remove and it works - thank you - here a second click (which is the trade-off ...) is not too much of an annoyance.
The switch overlay off option is a nice addition indeed.

...see at the bottom for remarks about the middle section of your reply.

QuoteOki, so few more questions on you (please, short, clear answers):
- "double/missing item i the panel array" - what you are talking about?
MBe: on the left side there are those oversized blue buttons. Two of them have the same symbol - the layers. And both show the same content. In the earlier beta, one of them showed showed the overview, incl. your explanation text, and the other showed the visibility switches. Now both show the switches.

Quote- "usability" - what is a problem here as no usability is lost. I still do not understand a problem here, at least I do not see it.
MBe: maybe I did not explore all angles. A standard principle is: useful functions should be allowed to sit on the screen (auto and double tap hiding assumed, of couse), but not need traversing option/menu trees. Yes, overlays can be put on a button still, which safes the day, hence it is redundant in the other menu. But the real topic is another one: a new concept has its justification if it is better than the existing ones. And you have a perfect mechanics in place with the button panels. Content and button position inside the panel: all in user hands. Visibility mechanics - perfect.
And now compare those new blue beasts ...
Screen space is valuable - oversized buttons like the blue ones are a simple waste, no added value.

You refer to your rule with Petr: others and I have made proposals how to improve these things ... days ago.

So, here again:
- rather than introducing a new, oversized category of buttons, use the existing mechanics and extend it to the left side.
- all of those new functions (nearest points, Panoramio, overlay on/off, OSM notes, etc.), which are really nice, BTW, should be available to be put on any panel
- as you accept redundancy anyway, you can offer the menu hierarchy in the blue master button as a button for the standard panel, of course
- offering a left side panel will simply cope with the increased number of interesting things a user may want to have on the screen

Makes sense ?

Cheers
Michael

Hello Michale, thanks for explanation. Let me ask one more thing.

In current published version of Locus:
- "Quick map switch" button in top left corner has same style as right panel, but is not modificable and it out of control from hiding by double tap
- "Map theme switcher" - already working as big blue beast on left. Btw why "big"? They are thinner and longer - covered are is same as other buttons
- "Active items" - already working as ...

All these three buttons are already in 3.12.0 version and there were no complain. All these three buttons are out of current system of top-right panel. All these three buttons handle style and content of a map. And because I wanted to create system of "Layers" and system of "Nearest points", for me it's logical step to place them also to left side next to these three buttons. But because of number buttons should be too much, side panel with "map content" (first bottom button) there will collect all these functions and that allows to add option to quickly handle any of them if needed, is quite logical step - all "Map content" at once place easily accessible without need to fiddle with right panel system.

Thanks for an opinions, I'll discuss it with rest of team.

About "same content on two buttons" - first one at bottom is main and it's open should always lead to main map content (it do not work it now). So just open bottom button and use arrow in top left corner to get to main menu.

@balloni55 & @0709 , thanks, I'll check it
@gynta: well, you are right. I also sometimes forget :).

Hi Menion, it makes a difference if you have one item of a kind, like the single button for map switch, or the thene switch,  or if something starts to multiply like rabbits. A single rabbitbis cute, if they flood your garden,  you feel differently ...

PS: currently my left hand side is nearly full with blue "rabbits" already,  andd we are just days into that development. And I would even like the idea of making the right hand buttons slimmer. Keeping the hight, though, to avoid tapping errors.

Sorry, no, this is not increment by one !
If you start to USE the new and good features, then you are cluttered on the left side immediately - and cannot hide it.
And you will add more features over time, which should be accessible at a finger tip - on the bike, in the car, in the wild.
So you will run out of space soon.

Hello everyone.
While I have made very few forum post, I am a member that I like to read discussions about new features and perhaps contribute ideas on the help desk.
In this issue of new blue buttons on the left, I favorable view of michaelbechtold. Today there is already a very good, practical and customizable method of adding actions (buttons) on panels (both top and left). It could also extend to the right pane.
In addition, these blue buttons to be thinner and longer, perhaps hinder their use in small screen devices or people with large fingers.
While it is not our (users) decision making of this or that form the right pane, if it is possible to think and Menion is in doubt, you could put together a survey (vote) at the help desk and know what everyone thinks users who do not read (or participate) in the forum.
Greetings.

For me buttons on left have increased from zero to one. Surely easy and consistent to have similar visibility control like other buttons and panels, suggestion: settings > Map - control & panels > Left buttons hiding?

1) Search function >  then Move to  > then dead
2) Routing via button in right panel,  Brouter as service. Routing screen does show up,  then dies after a second or so
hm, both problems are not reproducible here on my devices or VM.
If a reboot doesn't help, I think Menion need a logfile...

Hello Menion

I think we need your help.
I'm playing around with BRouter turn instructions, but my beta version (3.16.2.12) doesn't want to use them.
Even with a completely fresh setup on the phone and only Locus Free (Beta) installed, I always get the instructions generated by Locus. See picture two here.
http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=4064.msg42703#msg42703
If I set from_via_to points and let BRouter generate an GPX with the app it looks like picture one, perfect.

So Brouter works but not within route creation mode in Locus. Brouter is activated in the setup.
Do I have to config something else? Config file? Something in navigation setup?
Some files in special folders?

Thanks

@Joachim are you using the short-bike profile? short-bike for me is mapped to BRouter trekking.brf which I think is the only profile with new turnInstructionMode=1. It works for me nicely unless I misunderstand your situation.

How is this new feature "nearest points" supposed to work? Clearly below 2 points are 16,000km away.

Hi guys,

@gynta: leave be toggle for points in "layers" screen. I have to think more about it as you are correct - it's weird for now ;)

@michaelbechtold: issue with "search function,  them Move to ...,  then dead" - same as http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=5023.msg42665#msg42665 , consider it as fixed. Second issue probably same problem - it dies in moment Locus tries to display screen with selection of locations (points, clipboard, coordinates, map center, ...). gynta is unable to simulate it because he is probably using newer version then latest public Beta :)

@Joachim Buhl: as Andrew wrote, I think this will be some "issue" in mapped profiles, so please check it. No special settings exists in Locus

@Andrew Heard: hmm ... sorting location is quite common - enabled GPS? Then it's used GPS for sorting, otherwise is used map center. Don't know what may be wrong here. If you give me some data to simulate this problem, I may check it ...

Hello All

Thanks for help. Here some details.
BRouter Setup:

(http://s32.postimg.org/5pnas29pt/trekking.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/5pnas29pt/)
Choose trekking

(http://s32.postimg.org/krqcb9fht/servermode.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/krqcb9fht/)
Choose server mode

(http://s32.postimg.org/dkp3yrlip/bicycle.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/dkp3yrlip/)

(http://s32.postimg.org/ear6wudgx/mappiing.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/ear6wudgx/)
I mapped some time before all profiles to trekking. What means the 0 in brackets? should it be 1 or 2?

(http://s32.postimg.org/he22hzhkh/Locuscreate.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/he22hzhkh/)
I choose Bicycle short.

(http://s32.postimg.org/bs7dp6zzl/result1.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/bs7dp6zzl/)
To many instruction at each change of angle.

(http://s32.postimg.org/75po69acx/settings.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/75po69acx/)

What is wrong?

Hello

EDIT1:

I changes the parameter in trekking.brf "assign turninstructionmode" to 2.
after reconfiguring brouter and starting Locus it looks like this:

(http://s32.postimg.org/5v9ivrzjl/image.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/5v9ivrzjl/)
perfect.

And now the strange thing. When I delete my route points and I begin to plan new with some further track before, the same track looks like this at the second attemp:
(http://s32.postimg.org/9o3lp48mp/image.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/9o3lp48mp/)
Its not ok anymore.

What happens there? Is the connection between Locus and BRouter stable in every case, every time?

Thanks

EDIT2: And if I end the route creation mode in Locus and start it new, the first time routing it works right.

And sometimes when I place a point after point I do not get any routing. Than I delete the last point and repeat it and then I get a routing again.
Something is not right between Locus and the routing engine.

@Menion - true, GPS was not enabled - I am testing from desk. However the 1st point is 92m away (correct), and the next 2 points are 16,000+km away (correct), so what is definition of "nearest"? Are you just displaying all enabled points sorted by distance? If so, then list is correct, but to me misleading. If so then maybe database query should include distance < X. Minor suggestion.

@Joachim - do you maybe have OsmAnd installed? I just ask because turnInstructionMode  = 1  # 0=none, 1=auto-choose, 2=locus-style, 3=osmand-style. I don't experience your problems sorry.

Hello Andrew, hallo Menion

No, I did not have OsmAnd installed.

Abrensch did find the problem and I could confirm it.
See pictures here. http://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=4064.new;topicseen#new

If the segment in the route planning modus of Locus is long enough, that BRouter could create minimum one instruction, it works ok. If the segments you use for planning are to short, so that BRouter sees no need to generate an instruction, Locus comes in and creates some on his own with its "angle algorithm".
@Menion: Could this be changed? If BRouter generates no instructions, there should not be one.

Thanks

After downloading a LoMap from Store, Locus ask for downloading srtm hgt files.
My srtm folder is on extSD and the path is assigned in settings - and it works.
Locus have access to dl and save the zip file but can't delete the zip after unzip.

I use Locus v3.16.2.13
Is the ../Locus/logs/   logfile.txt useful in this case?

@Joachim - ahh yes, glad resolved, this has caught me out too many times, I don't like the way it is either - I always try to add at least one via point so that Locus does not generate its own instructions.

I think "Points Of Interest (Beta)" was introduced in V3.5.0 December 2014. I use it a lot. Great feature. So is this really still beta? And I wonder whether it would make sense/ consistent to integrate with other "Search" functions instead of stand alone button? When I look in the list of Search functions there is group "SEARCH IN OFFLINE POI" > Search in Points/ Tracks. Isn't this also where search of POI logically should belong instead of lost & alone?

@Joachim Buhl: good observation. Since next version when BRouter v 1.4.1+ will be used for compute of tracks, Locus won't generate navigation commands

@gynta: intersting, I'm unable to simulate. Let's try a log, thanks

@Andrew Heard: POI database will be on program next months as a next step right after offline addresses

Well, this was long six weeks and long list of interesting changes: http://help.locusmap.eu/announcement/version-3-17-0-16-5-2016

Have a nice day and be kind to new version. I'll try to fix everything as soon as possible, you know ;).
