Title: Live tracking service - let's start
Post by: Menion on February 11, 2016, 17:46:31
Hello guys,

we have finally moved a little bit and today, I've just released version of Locus with enabled really simple version of Live tracking feature.

Current features (Locus 3.15.3.1+):
- sharing current location in defined refresh interval. Ability to define icon, name and message
- display of other active users on a map as long, as you actively report own location

Features planned (in chronological order):
- ability to select from pre-defined "rooms" (public), where you location may be visible
- ability to create own rooms (private) and define who may enter
- some really simple web page with map and active users
- permanent storing of your report locations, something like track recording stored on server
- ability to see your history of already "recorded" tracks

For now, we do not need feedback with requests of a new features. Own plans are already defined. When feature became working as we wants, then we may discuss about another improvements. For now, just try it if you wants and enjoy ;). We wants to use such testing also to check stability and performance of our server-side solution. Bug reports are anyway welcome of course.

Well, be sure - I'm your man for testing this long awaited feature  ;)
Thx for the first steps!

You are the last who should thanks and I'm first who should thank you (again). For a nice service you created. After install, you will see that there is simple option how to add "GPSies" as Live tracking service. If you will wants to keep your service alive and public, feel free to write me and I'll add it into this list as well.

A) The text in top/right corner is too small/ hard to read - it says Stop when I zoom in.
B) I tried to type "AH" into nickname field but got error message that text was too short - but isn't that the idea of a nickname?

@Andrew: hmm I've set nickname to be at least 4 characters. Maybe I should think about 2, done :)

And I'm aware that start/stop of live tracking service should be improved, thanks anyway

@gynta: I saw you on the map. Try it now. Looks like me and Michal, we are both visible now ;)

"Stop" button ... only when notification is first, then extra buttons are visible. I still found not way how to display them also when notification is second or lower.

Not much testing I see this morning, except fifi (from New Caledonia!), and Menion (the home of Locus) ...

@balloni55: how did you manage to keep your position in the middle of Stuttgarter Kreuz for half an hour at least ?
zossebart I could see moving from a village to a shelter in a forest

mega traffic jam :P ;)
no no, in this case i have locus running on PC inside VM and additional "Fake GPS"

i also see zossebart moving, i think he is on bike

EDIT: @ Michael, do you have two tracker running on same device? MBe7000 and MBe9500
EDIT2: now i see, tracker is on two devices running

Yea right, tested it today on a bike trip. I had the update interval set to 60s. I also saw menion sitting in his office, balloni and 2x MBexxx.
It seemed to work quite well, at least from what I could tell while on the bike.

I wondered why my VM is not visible, now I see that it does not provide GPS at all to be spoofed ...

what is the update interval inside locus of other tracker i see on map?
For test i run tracker on VM with GPS fake and randomly moving 500 meter all 3 seconds
when i watch this moving fake position with my device positions are displayed with delay and not ongoing.

EDIT: while watching you on your sunny trip i noticed update interval is one minute

You have to USE Locus live tracking.
1. Be sure you are online and have an SATfix
2. Call function live tracking
3. Add service (+) and choose "Locus live tracking"
4. Insert a(your) nickname
5. Start livetrackin (top right)
6. Look for your mates on map (they must use Locus live tracking in same way):

Hi. System is quite simple. When I was on a trip, I defined update interval to 60 seconds directly in parameters of service in Locus. This means "I send update once per 60 second and also I receive new data once per 60 seconds" - everytime you send new data, you also receive update with locations of other users. So not everytime, something change, but only when YOU report update. Better?

do you know the volume of data traffic per update?

Post by: Menion on February 15, 2016, 08:22:09
No yet, I just did a small test and ...
- outgoing update (your location, nickname etc.) - 200 bytes
- incoming update should be around 150-200 bytes per user

But more precise information later. It also depend on length of "message", that is currently not limited (have to limit it to around 160 chars)

Hi,
I tested it today: 1Kb every transaction (more or less) not too expensive if I set it at 5 min rate.

I was afraid of the data volume due to roaming but the Eurotariff is 25 cents / Mb so with a firewall that blocks all applications except locus there is no longer a real problem.

0.00025 €/Kb * 12Kb/Hour= 0.003€/Hour

I am waiting for a web page where you can track users who share their position as I have not another device to check live tracking.

Hi,
Once I saw few members in Czech but can't see my friends in Poland using Locus Tracking. Do I need any ID or something ?
I have ver. 3.16.0, my friend too and we can't see each other on the map. I choose settings - live tracking - add locus live tracking (filling nickname, message, icon ect) and Start. Cant see myself on the map and my friends too.
Maybe I left any step ??

Hmm interesting. There is no secret behind this, it should just work. Only limitation is max. 300 seconds refresh time, maybe set it lower to around 60 seconds to be sure that You will see others as well as others will see You in all cases. Currently I see two people in Poland, so you may try it now.

I can't do much testing without the webclient either. My user-case isn't multiple Locus user friends, it's one Locus user being viewed by multiple webclient users (friends/ family). BTW those friends/ family won't be concerned if my position isn't updated every 5 minutes when I am cycle touring in another country. Even position once a day is more than enough when zoomed out.

I was also thinking about it, but if this is needed will show time. Because currently you sit home and play with it. It needs to be tested in the field to see if message is really so interesting.

Hi
I know there is a feature request freeze but just to clarify on a planned feature, it would be really good if the simple webpage part didnt require login, or if it could be set to a specific user centered on them, this would be really usefull as currently Gyntas system does this perfectly and as we can only have one livetracking service at a time, i wouldnt be able to change over for daily use untill it does.

Thanks Menion
Al

Q:
Customized live tracking needs a update time X, a moving distance X and a accuracy value to send an successful point.
What conditions are needed in Locus live tracking?
Title: Re: Locus - Live tracking service

Q:
Quotewe are currently working on an extensions called "Rooms", where only owner of created "room" will define who will be there, so who will see you and other people in same room. This feature will be available to everyone with small monthly fee. Work is in progress, estimate release to public is till end of May if all went well.

1. means LoCoins, right?
2. So, to enter the "room" i will also need PRO AND LoCoins?
Title: Re: Locus - Live tracking service
Post by: Menion on April 20, 2016, 13:56:25
1. yep
2. nope. I was thinking about it, but in the end I found it too ... usually known as "milch-cow", which I do not want :). So only user who wants to create and manage private room will need this "paid access". But all invited users should use Locus Map Free without any problems and without payments. So for example only one user in group of friends needs to have Locus Map with this paid access. All other don't have to care about. At least this is a version we are working on it. It may change, but should not.

EDIT: ah, your previous question: you define just a refresh time, because this is only parameter that is considered. Because every refresh means not just a sending location, but also receiving other locations (other users), it needs to be done even if you don't move.

Could we also request the live positions as a KML? Either for one single user or for a group or room or whatever? Then we could provide simple google earth / google maps / gpsvisualizer / gpsies / godknowswhat links to friends & family... no need for a Locus map web service.

Hello, I'm using with pleasure the function of Live tracking and noticed that the icon of the person you're tracking persists even after it has disabled the tracking or sometimes you see the icon of an old position. It would be very useful in my opinion give a value to the point with a ranking based on the colors, something like this: green icon detected from less than a minute, from one minute to 5 yellow, red from 5 to 10 min, black over the 10 minutes. So just take a look to find out how old is the position shown on the map.

Ah oki ... is on both devices running GPS? No ... so are you on both devices using same simulator? If values are available, they are also displayed, simple. So if you run some simulator on VM, there is probably no speed etc. So they are not visible in detail on your device.

Ah, it's enabled (simplification) by default for all points. For other users, I use special setitngs that disable for all of them simplification. In case of this single "last valid location", it's not so simple - funny ( humor of developers, just ignore it).

Is it really needed? This point should really serve as a backup point in case of need, so simplified version should not be a problem here. Or did I miss something?

Title: Locus - Live tracking service: display Lat Lon on the web page map
Post by: alf on February 19, 2017, 12:10:26
Hello

Many thanks for this live tracking.
It is fast (no need to wait a long time between the start of live tracking in Locus) compared to GPSies.

A feature that I have been unable to figure out is how to display on the Locus live tracking web page map any information other than the user name (for example the latitude and longitude of the user).

As the map doesn't seem to display the coordinate grid, I have not been able to find a way to know the coordinates of the displayed user position.
It is highly possible that I am an idiot and cannot figure out how to display the coordinates.

But if this is not the case, will it be possible for a future implementation of the web page to display the coordinates when pointing to the position icon ?

This will be very useful in the following case:
The locus user is considered by the user follower as injured (the follower has no news, the user has not arrived to destination, etc...)
The user-follower (wife, son, friend...) is able to use the Locus live tracking  web site and see the last known user position on the map.
The map doesn't really give a clear and obvious hint about the user coordinates (for example, the user is on an area with little markers like large water body or a vast snow plain).
The user-follower wants to give the last known user position coordinates to rescue services,
If the user-follower had a displayed grid on the map, or if the latitude and longitude were displayed together with the user name, the user-follower will then be able to give the latitude and longitude of the last user position to the rescue services.

Thanks and regards

Alf

The user-follower wants to give the last known user position coordinates to rescue services,
If the user-follower had a displayed grid on the map, or if the latitude and longitude were displayed together with the user name, the user-follower will then be able to give the latitude and longitude of the last user position to the rescue services.

Thanks and regards

Alf
Hello,
You can easily solve it using locus pro where you can see everyone who has live tracking on and using the features of locus you can obtain the coordinates.

But what you want on the live tracking web page was requested also for locus pro live tracking. So why do not show when you click or touch the icon of a user:
Alias
Message
Date and time of last log
Coordinates
(Time from start of live tracking)
Distance
Time from start
Pace
Altitude gain
...
Someone asked also for Hart rate if I remember

I do use Locus Live Tracking amongst my fellow geocachers and track/route buddies, but for safety and contact with family I use a sms service. My family got iphones, sms is perfect for anti-nerdy family members.

App is called DRADIS https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.prototypezero.dradis

Its exactly the service for my needs and comes with a handy widget... I would love to see Locus with same functionality!
This reply is not meant to promote anything, just own experience about important subject.

Just my 5 cent..

I agree for the SMS service I created a tasker profile for this. It should be great to have it in locus.

Good day guys,
thanks for ideas and discussion. Our main goal with this live tracking system is for now simplicity. This is problem in app itself (where whole live tracking feature is little complicated), but on web page, we will try to keep it clean and simple.

So unfortunately no extra parameters are currently planned except these, that are visible on few days before started web page where you may see your own rooms ( just share key to your own room to get valid "room url" ).

We are thinking just about coordinates and maybe there will be any solution.

And enjoy "Android ecosystem". It is nice that when one app miss some feature, it may be found in different app so thanks Haggi for sharing, hope your tip find out users useful.

I have become interested in live tracking firstly so that my whereabouts is known on my walks.  Now, I should be pleased to see someone's location from day to day on a pilgrim's way in Spain.  We set up live tracking on Locus Map at More functions/Live tracking and could 'see' each other successfully at our respective homes.  Spain is different: rightly or wrongly, I found myself needing to know his approximate location or having to zoom out so far, and having to download an online map of that area  so that I could 'see' him (I appreciate I could import OSM mapping for Spain, for example).  I tried GPSies through Locus Map next and appreciated immediately the ease with which users are 'seen' or could be selected from a list, even.  Quite by chance, I discovered Live Tracking at http://www.locusmap.eu/live-tracking/.  This seemed easiest of all.  Furthermore, a very small-scale map displays to show all users at once.  I had read about live tracking at http://docs.locusmap.eu/doku.php?id=manual:user_guide:functions:live_tracking, but no apparent reference to this web facility surprised me.
I wished to test the facility today on my walk.  I had Wi-Fi switched off, I had a 4G network showing and the signal was 3/4 or 4/4 bars yet I received a note stating, "Unknown problem  Problem with internet connection!  Java.io.IOException: NetworkError  code:11303".  I gave up after some time and switched from Locus Map to GPSies on my 'phone.  I asked my wife to 'see' me through m.gpsies.com and she could!  I should be grateful if someone could inform me if there are faults with what I have done so far.

Good day silvermapper,
sorry to hear about such troubles. Error 11303 is internal Locus Map error that I've already saw before. It happen in cases, Locus Map has some troubles ( more precisely background Android system ) with validation of used Google account ( Google account used to login into Locus Store and also to using this live tracking service ).
I suggest to simply try to open Locus Store in main menu of Locus and if there will be a problem, try simply restart device, it is very universal cure.
Hope it will work fine then.

I thank you for your suggestions.
I was able to open Locus Store at home, but I powered off my 'phone and on, additionally.  Away from home during the morning, I was presented with a 11303 error message when trying to open Locus Store.  This was no different following powering off my 'phone and on again.  The common element might appear to be Wi-Fi, yet I can obtain Locus Store at home with Wi-Fi turned off.

Hi guys,
I'm closing this older topic. Live tracking function is on and running for some time so it deserve separate topics for new improvements and problems ;).

For topic related to new live-tracking.locusmap.app web page, please use new topic here: https://forum.locusmap.eu/index.php?topic=6509.0 , thanks.
